Snail. That has been her “nickname” since she set foot in Hogwarts, which means four years ago. Snailtalie, sometimes she addressed as that. Nevertheless, hardly does she mind being called like that because she likes snails and people are not wrong about her. Snails are slow, she is not that fast. If she were, she would be able to escape when the bullies are blocking her ways. Snails do not talk much and neither does she. Perhaps they do talk, just not out loud – like her. In class, the professors scarcely see her hand; but somehow they are afraid of asking her to answer any of their questions, because they will have to wait for ages to get a proper answer if they do. Disappointed, of course they are, but they have to know that she is not stupid – she knows the answer but merely cannot put it in words and the mean stares only worsen the situation. Sometimes Natalie wonders why they do not use a spell to read mind instead of making the students speak out loud what they want to know. Anyhow, the professors choose to leave her alone for most of the time, and to be honest, she is grateful for that.
Muggles often wish that they had magic so that they would turn their world into a better one. Here in her world, even with magic and the pure bloodline, she could not make it any better. But that is unnecessary as she is pleased with what you have, including the names. No, Natalie is not weak. She is merely the type of person who likes putting up with stuff better than quarrelling and getting herself into troubles, though she does want to be the reason for some troubles very so often. But everyone says that only courageous people cause trouble. Natalie has never let herself stand among mayhems since she was old enough to define “problems” and “consequences”. Courage is something so much unfamiliar with Natalie. On dark days of winters, she is scared of her own shadows. The grumpy sound of the thunders is all what it takes to make the little girl burst into tears or hide under her blanket. Funny when her place was among the Gryffindors – who are supposed to be the bravest of all. Maybe the Sorting Hat was drunk the night he put her into this house. He should have seen no bravery inside her; he should have placed her among the Hufflepuff or sent her home if that was a right decision. Her older sister usually offers her comfort when telling her that the Sorting Hat’s decision is always reliable and courage is living within her, waiting to be discovered. Natalie sniggers every time she hears that.
To be fair, in life things there are more things to fear than to trust. And Natalie Grant oddly finds everything on the planet scary as hell. The sound of thunders and the laughter of the bullies are not dissimilar to her at all, if not entirely the same. It is four years since the first time that cruel sound has come to her ears; yet she is still struggling to turn a deaf ear to it. How could the girl ignore it when it is so haunting – and so true? They say she has ruined the Gryffindor’s reputation with her cowardly and she cannot say that it is wrong. They say that there is no place for the one who only runs and hides like her among them. They have a good point. All she can do is remain quiet and keep tears from running down her face.
Natalie does not want to be weak, too. It used to be great joy of hers to be weak, when she still lived with her family at the loving home in London. Being the centre of attention, a daddy’s little girl and the baby in the family is what every girl likes. Natalie was no exception to it. If only it could last forever. But it is time to grow up. And there is no room for fragility because now it is no longer everyone that she can count on. After the first half of year one, Natalie started learning to keep things to herself. In letters to her parents, she hardly mentions her struggles in the new environment. She decides not to burden anyone, including her older siblings, with her issues. Though Henry never lets her face things alone and she trusts him with her life, she still chooses to do that. Natalie does everything in her power to have him uninformed of any problems she has, such as the bullies, so as to keep him from troubles. Still, the big brother still manages to appear from nowhere to save the day whenever she needs, which makes her feel guilty yet grateful at the same time. And the epic always ends up with him getting detention because of her, which seems to double the bad feeling she has already had. But after every single time like that, their bond is even stronger. Never has she forgotten how lucky she is to have a brother like Henry. But he will graduate one day and she will be left alone in the world. Thus, it is time to grow up.
Nothing is permanent, not even her pain. Before a bird can fly, it has to fall. Natalie Grant is taking her first fall. Soon enough, she will spread her wings and make people see her fly.
