Brought up in a muggle family, Emmaline (pronounced emma-line, like a straight line) was born the last child of the Summerby siblings. However she wasn't too far behind. The first child was Julian, born four years before her and then her second oldest brother, born just a year before. The difference between her and her siblings though, was Emma was born with a disability. Causing her parents and siblings to learn a whole new language, Emmaline Summerby was born deaf.
Though her parents were aware of the struggle ahead, they loved their daughter and wouldn't dream of giving her up because of a setback such as that. They decided from the moment they held her in their arms that they would do whatever it would take to keep their daughter safe and happy. Most would think that a cochlear device would be the logical way to go, but the family couldn't afford the procedure, nor did they believe their daughter should think it was a bad thing to be who she was. But the biggest thing was, they wanted their daughter to decide for herself when she was old enough. Sure, there were many things that would lie ahead for the youngest Summerby that would pose as a problem, but they knew in the end, she would be okay.
From the moment she began to make sounds like she was ready to talk, The Summerby's took their daughter to speech therapy in order to give the young girl a chance to speak. Surprisingly to her parents, she picked up speech quickly and by the time she was three she was speaking full sentences. However, the young girl didn't like to talk as much as she liked to sign. The problem there was no one knew how to sign, but her family, so when it came time for school she would have problems communicating with other children.
School did pose to be a hardship for the young girl. As she continued to get older, she started to pull into a shell. Her parents didn't know why, but it had seemed that the young girl had a shy nature about her. In fact, it was somewhat of a social anxiety, but not as severe. She wouldn't talk to anyone unless she was spoken to first, or it was absolutely necessary. Quickly she picked up the art of reading lips as well and though she didn't want it, her parents had an interpreter with her in her classes.
As she grew older, having the interpreter caused Emma grief. She was bullied because she became an easy target. This made her even more shy because she was afraid that every new person would judge her for who she was. It wasn't just a disability, it was a defining factor of who she was and who she would become. Emma wasn't ashamed of it though, she just wished it was easier to make friends. The isolation from people gave her a new insight to who she was though, despite the loneliness. It was when she was ten that she started to realize she was special in other ways as well. Most of what she looked at and read, she could remember. Learning came easy to her before and now she was figuring out why. Emma was blessed with an eidetic memory.
There was also the fact that strange things were happening for the family. At age seven, her older brother Julian found out he was a Wizard. It came as a shock to the whole family, but it was exciting and a new way to live life. Emma wondered if she would end up like him. When she was ten, the same year she found out she had eidetic memory, her second oldest brother ended up at this wonderful school called Hogwarts as well. Having both of her brothers gone was hard for the young girl. She was close to both of them and she missed them whenever they were gone. She cried a lot the years Julian was gone and then even more so when they were both gone. But at age eleven, she got to be reunited with them.
After receiving a letter from Hogwarts, Emma found out that she was also magical. Before going to Hogwarts, she told her parents that she did not want an interpreter following her around. It was hard enough being shy, she didn't need a permanent way for her to stand out to everyone. She would make do and figure it out on her own. And so, when it was time, she left to go to Hogwarts with her brothers.
Following along in class was hard and so was making friends, but she kept up the best she could and just decided to lay low. Stay under the radar. She was sorted into the Hufflepuff house which was yet another blessing for Emma. Most of the students in that house were very kind. She got along with a lot of them and made a few friends, but that's really all she could ask for. The bullying didn't stop even though she was in a new atmosphere. It was still easy to stick a target on the deaf girl, but she was making it through even if making it through meant crying herself to sleep every night.
Emma is now in her fifth year at Hogwarts and despite the folks that like to torment her, she still calls it her second home. Not everyone is so bad and it's not as hard for her to keep up in classes anymore. As long as she read her books and practiced outside of class, she was good. She was a bright girl, with a heart of gold and nothing, or no one, was going to change that about her.
