“Please stay where you are, Christina. This dinner needs to be done perfectly and obviously you cannot make anything ediable aside from your weird muggle dishes.” Aunt Rosa spoke indignantly, glaring at Mum like she was going to ruin the whole dinner just by stepping into the kitchen. Mum kept quiet, as she always did everytime she saw the frown on Dad's siblings' faces. Mum said something very quietly to Aunt Rosa that I could not hear, then she turned on her heels and made a beeline for the back door which lead to the garden where she could be alone.
Dad was standing in the corner of the room, watching the whole scene; but all he could do was letting out a sigh of depression. Like there was nothing else he could do. As I noticed, family dinner at weekend was always a disaster – not to everyone, just to us. But the reason was never revealed to me no matter how many times I asked. I did not dare to ask either Dad or Mum for fear that it would make them feel worse if I did. My younger twin sister Evelyn probably knew just as much as I did. So I came to my brother Quinn, who was never chosen to play in the family Quidditch match regardless of his excellent skills, only to get told that Evelyn and I should not be too nosy for seven-year-old kids. All that the three of us did at every single family gathering was sitting next to one another and playing 20 questions game while our cousins showed off their wizard card collections. Sometimes they shot us a glare for no reason.
Quinn said his collection was cooler than theirs, and it was such a shame that they would never get to see it.
Stupid kids.

Mum and Aunt Rosa had a huge fight today. Like huge fight. Grandpa, Grandma and everyone else rushed to the kitchen. But no kids were allowed to be there. Uncle Josh stood by the door of the playroom to make sure none of us snuck out. Quinn looked seriously worried while Evelyn and I did not understand what was going on. Quinn told us to keep playing 20 questions game, but we did not want to. We wanted to know what was going on, and if Mum was going to be okay. Aunt Rosa was a fat and strong lady who could easily crush Mum if she wanted to. Well, Grandpa would not let that happen of course. He always defended Mum when everyone criticised her. That is why I like him the most.
An hour later everyone was out of the kitchen, except Mum. Dad looked terribly angry when my uncles dragged him out. Quinn did not want Evelyn and I to get to the kitchen with him but we insisted that we wanted to go and he had to agree eventually.
Mum was sitting on a chair, her face hidden behind her blond curls. When we approached, she told us to leave her alone and that she could not look at us right now. Quinn did not listen, he kept asking Mum to tell us what had happened. Mum got so angry and she turned to yell at us.
That was when we saw her swelling reddened cheek.
Quinn cried. Mum cried. Evelyn and I just stood there, wondering what was going on. The two of us remembered that mum did not put on any makeups at all. How come her cheek turned so red?
"That filthy muggleborn witch cannot be here!" Aunt Rosa yelled from another room. Her voice was pitchy and bitter.
"But she is the woman that I love, Rosa!" Dad screamed back, even louder. He sounded like he was crying. "She did nothing wrong!"
"Her existence in this world is her biggest mistake." Aunt Rosa snapped.
Mum pulled Evelyn in and covered her ears while Quinn did the same to me. Evelyn burst into tears and Mum had to pat her back to comfort her.
I just widened my eyes.
That was the last family gathering I ever came to.

"Put that brush away, Evelyn!" Mum took the brush from Evelyn's hand and accidentally ruined her whole painting. I could see tear welling up in her large eyes when she looked at her work, which she had spent hours to complete. Mum did not seem to want to be any softer to Evelyn at all. "This whole crap will not give you any respects! Do something that helps you earn money, Evelyn Croft! Money. It's the only way people will stop looking down on us!"
Dad rushed in a dragged Mum out before she could lose her mind. But he also reminded that it was better for Evelyn to study more useful things than art, unless she wanted to be an underdog for the rest of her life.
Evelyn struggled to keep her tears from streaming down her face, but she could not. Everything I was capable of doing for her giving her an embrace and telling her that it was okay.
No, it was not okay.
The world revolves around money. It is the only that mattered. You have money, you have everything. Nowadays, even faith and trust are built upon money. Money and power.
Like they are the only reason for our existence.

Dad brought Evelyn and me to Diagon Alley today to shop for our first school year at Hogwarts. Like every kid, we were excited, until Dad told us to look at the cover of a book. There was a picture of a man on it, he looked smart and, of course, rich, perhaps a little obnoxious, too, but Dad ignored it. I noticed that Evenly only stared at the painting tools on the shelves of the bookstore. She did not pay any attention to Dad when he ranted on an on about history of the man on the cover of the book. He was a businessman who was widely respected and maybe feared, too. He made loads of money and had divorced twice.
"People like him are respectable." Dad said. I think there was bitter in his voice, too. "Be like him and life would treat you kind."
I asked Dad to buy me the book after that. And I spent the whole week reading it, over and over again.
Someday my face will be on the cover of a book. And people will talk about me like they talk about this man.

Mum sent my an owl this morning to congratulate on my getting sorted into Slytherin. Dad also sent his love and Mum told me that I made them proud. At the end of the letter, they expressed their concern about Evelyn, who had fallen short of their expectations and got placed among the Hufflepuffs, who according to Mum were losers. I never think Evelyn is a loser. She just does not usually live up to Mum and Dad's expectations.
They wished she could have become like me.
It might have escaped their notice but Evelyn is half of me. She is my twin sister. We are two sides of the same coin. And it stands to reason that two sides of the same coin never look the same.
But I cannot blame Mum and Dad for not realizing that.
I heard that Aunt Rosa had visited them a week ago. Some words in the letter were blurred by water. Mum probably cried again.
I cannot disappoint them. I cannot let anyone look down on us again.

We had a family gathering today. It's probably been a hundred years since I last saw Aunt Rosa. She has got fatter, and uglier, and so has her kids. Mum did not offer to help in the kitchen anymore; instead, she sat with other adults, talking about politics and economy. Everyone was thrown off balance by the amount of knowledge she had. They said a lot of things wrong and Mum corrected them so many times that soon enough all of them had to shut their mouths and listened to her "words of wisdom". I saw satisfaction on Dad's face when he looked at his siblings.
Maybe family gathering will not be distratrous anymore.
Then they started to talk about the kids. Mum and Dad were so proud when they talked about Quinn and me, who never failed them in anything. We did great at school and our results were beyond expectations. But then Aunt Rosa asked about Evelyn and I could right away see Mum's eyes darken. The gloom made her smile die. Aunt Rosa would not leave Mum alone until she got what she wanted.
I had to force myself to leave the room lest I should witness something unpleasant, like Aunt Rosa's gloating face and her sarcasm.
"Stop chasing rainbows, Evvie." I told my twin sister the moment I caught sight of her painting in the garden. As the words left my mouth, I took her brush away, like mum had done a few years ago. "This whole thing you are doing will not lead us anywhere. Be realistic, Evvie! Be like me!"
Me. Be like me. Only by becoming like me can Evelyn survive in this cruel world. Why couldn't she see?
This life is all about surviving.
There is no room for the dreamers.
You only dream when you are asleep.
And if you don't wake up.
It means you are dead.
Maybe family gathering will not be distratrous anymore.
