It had been many years since Draco Malfoy had been a thorn in the side of who was then Hermione Granger. Draco was the epitome of immaturity and hostility then. But it was obvious the years and the dark events in those years had changed Malfoy, along with his feelings toward Hermione. She was now his Adviser and Draco fully believed there was no one better for the job than her. Draco now saw in her a very intelligent and clever woman, and he placed his full trust in her. And with that trust had come respect. And with that respect had come friendship.
Now the two had an interesting new connection besides their past and their work at the Ministry. Draco's son was to marry Hermione's daughter. Draco had laughed to himself a bit on how such events had unfolded. But he also saw it as something he wanted to do for Hermione was quite some time- invite her out to lunch, and not just anywhere, but the Golden Veela, one of the most elegant and expensive restaurants in London's Wizarding World.
Stepping in, Malfoy met the host.
"My usual table," he said. "And Mrs. Hermione Weasley will be arriving shortly. Would you please direct her to it?"
"Of course, Minister," nodded the host as he walked with Malfoy to his private table.

Draco Malfoy.
They had once had a terrible and turbulent relationship with one another. Blood lines being what they were in those days, if you weren't a pure blood you were scum, and no one believed this more than the Malfoys. Thus, Draco had been awful to Hermione and vice versa, becoming what you could call enemies in their Hogwarts days. She had despised him for his prejudice but a part could understand Draco's conflict and arrogance. It was not his fault he was brought up the way he was. Hermione had no doubt that if she had Lucius Malfoy for a father, she would be no better.
Alas, he had redeemed himself in the end.
Since the end of the War (or the last war as the case may be now), Draco Malfoy seemed to have changed his ways. He was nothing but courteous and polite to Hermione and though Ron had told her otherwise, she had accepted his offer in forgiveness. It would take time for the wounds to heal but now with situations being what they were between Rose and Scorpio, it was essential and imperative to put the past behind them.
In a weird way, perhaps they were always destined for this. Why else would they all have had such an effect on each other? No, now was the time to sort things out once and for all. So, when Draco had offered to take her for lunch Hermione had accepted.
As she entered the restaurant, she suddenly realised just how posh this place was. It was no doubt one of the more expensive places in the Wizarding World. As she was led to a private table, Hermione saw him at last. Blonde hair, grey eyes, a slightly pointed face. There was no mistaking him.
"Draco," she said pleasantly. A part of her felt nervous though she couldn't understand why. Hermione stood looking at him for a few moments, unsure of what to do. "I suppose we've never done this before. I never would have thought... You and me. At the same table."

Draco smiled at Hermione saying she never thought it was possible for them to be dining at the same table. It was true enough. Even with her being his Advisor and the two now respecting one another as they did, it did seem odd.
"Well soon you and I will be dining at the same table quite often," said Draco. "Family dinners and all of that. Oh pardon me..." Draco then stepped over and pulled Hermione's chair out for her as a gentleman would. Once she was seated, he returned to his seat and smiled at her.
"I suppose even after all these years, we still have some air to clear," he said. "Hermione, I once apologized to you, Ron, and Harry for what I did in the ranks of the Dark Lord... but as we both know, there was more than that, especially between you and I personally. I called you some very nasty names, and made light of you having Muggle parents. That was wrong of me, and for that I want to give you a long awaited apology. Our families are to be connected soon, and I want our children and our grandchildren to know the friendship we have now, not the bitterness we had then." @hermioneg

Hermione observed him carefully as he spoke, though it still came as a surprise when Malfoy suddenly stepped around her and pulled out a chair for her to sit on. She could have barely imagined him doing anything more than a sneer at her at Hogwarts.
'Oh - thank you,'' the brunette said, cautiously seating herself at the table. A part of her wondered if this was some kind of trick of his, it would be the kind of thing Malfoy would do. Still, they would have to trust each other from now on. They would be family. As if reading her mind Draco sat down opposite and began to talk about their past - er - relationship.
Hermione sat up straight in her chair with her hands placed lightly in her lap. There was a slight frown on her face but not from anger, but concentration. She drank in every work he said and did not speak until Malfoy had finished. The witch allowed a few moments to pass before she looked into her hands and ran one through her bushy brown hair.
'Well, that was quite a speech,' Hermione said, but then she smiled. 'Thank you. I know it couldn't have been easy, turning against your parents like that. You're very brave, Malfoy. And I am sorry too, from all of us. I think the best thing to do is to put the past behind us.' She paused for a moment before continuing. 'Ron didn't want me to come,' she said in a small voice. 'I think it's going to be tricky convincing him that you're not working for the Dark Lady somehow.' Hermione's eyes flicked up dangerously. 'You're not, are you?'

Draco didn't expect Hermione to just say, "Awww, that's alright" after Draco had said his peace. She was a brilliant woman and his sins against her and the others had been many. Still, to know that she was willing to make amends, even if it was for the sake of their future grandchildren, was a good feeling.
"I appreciate your forgiveness, Hermione, and yes it was extremely difficult to part from centuries of a dark family tradition," he said. "That final day of the battle, I truly believe that for the first time I saw people and things with my own eyes and not my father's. And you have no need to apologize, Hermione. I have never blamed you for being careful about me."
If most anyone else has accused Draco of being in league with the Dark Lady, he would he would been insulted. But he could understand why Ron and Hermione would have suspicions. They had both seen him at his worst after all.
"I hope I can also make amends with Ron some day," he said. "But I assure you both that I have put forth every effort to try and stop the Dark Lady. In fact, I firmly believe that my family and I have become her targets as well."

Draco didn't look at all surprised by Hermione's response. On the the contrary, he practically agreed with her. 'The war changed everything,' she said quietly, looking in to her hands for a moment. The witch felt her stomach tie in knots at the thought of that dreadful time, all those they had lost. Hermione composed herself and looked up again as Malfoy mentioned Ron.
She smiled wearily.
'You can try. But I think it's going to take some time.' She took a sip of her drink and studied the man opposite her for several more minutes. 'I believe you,' she said at last. 'But I can't pretend I don't have doubts. I can't put my family in any more danger.' Hermione frowned a little as she said. 'What makes you think you have been targeted? What's happened?'

Draco merely nodded at the comment about the war changing everything. It was a incredible turning point. As Draco had said, if it hadn't been for the war, he would have grown up to be his father, a wicked man who despised the existence of any who were not pureblood. He would have lived and died a bitter man, leaving behind a stained legacy. He thanked Merlin he was allowed a second chance.
He was about to reply to Hermione about Ron when the server asked their orders.
"I'll have my usual with an iced tea," he said. He looked at Hermione. "I highly recommend the house steak."
Once the exchange with the server was to end, Draco returned to the conversation about Hermione's husband.
"You know, as silly as I found Ron, when I look back now, I recall how much he cared about you, even when he was younger and probably didn't show it often. He stood up to me and others for you. Again looking back now, I admire that. And from what all I hear, he's a fine Auror now."
Draco looked down for a moment in thought when Hermione asked about his family being a target, then looked back at her.
"A short time ago, my answer would have simply been that being Minister and one trying to stop this evil would have made me a target," he said. "But now there's a more frightening reason. I believe that when Scorpius saved your son Hugo in Knockturn that night, he went on the list. I fear for his safety as well as your Rose's, but at the same time, perhaps this marriage will not only bring our family's together, but form a new strength in us all that will aid in defeating that abomination of a dark witch."

Hermione watched as Draco nodded solemnly. He had opened his mouth to speak when a sever arrived at their table. She couldn't help but smirk a little at Malfoy's confidence - he had obviously been here many times before. She remembered that he must have had a very privileged upbringing, despite his shortcomings and that places like this was the norm for him but out of the ordinary for her. 'Okay, that would be great,' said Hermione, taking Draco's opinion and smiling politely at the server.
Once alone again, Malfoy turned his attention back to her and addressed the issue of Ron. She could sense there was still a bitterness there but decided not to mention it and instead focus on the positives. This was a turning point after all, she had to do this for their family, and specifically Rose. She just hoped Ron would see it that way too.
Hermione felt her stomach clench uncomfortably but tried to take comfort in his words. 'I think you're right,' she said at last in a small voice. 'I knew as soon as Scorpio saved Hugo that this would not be over.' She paused for a moment before adding. 'I'm sorry if this means we are responsible for putting your family in danger. But I think we do need to work together this time. We could be so much stronger than before.'

Draco shook his head when Hermione felt her family put this in danger. He didn't feel that for a second. Draco knew the moment he had heard of the dark happenings that this was coming, and that all of them would be involved. It was inevitable.
"Do not feel guilty, Hermione," he said. "Think about it. You, Ron, Harry are one of the most famous trios in history, and it was because you three stopped the most wicked dark wizard in history. As for myself, I go back to what I said about being Minister. Regardless of what has transpired with our children, we would have been targets at one point or another- you, Harry, and Ron because you're no doubt still worthy adversaries for any dark force that would dare attack our world. Myself because if this Dark Lady is anything like... Voldemort, she'll want to take over the Ministry and knows by now that she will have to do so after walking over my dead body. Hermione, the targeting of our families is a means to try and break us, to make us easy prey. So don't blame yourself."

Hermione nodded, knowing that Draco was right. Of course they would be targets. They were famous for vanquishing You-Know-Who, Harry more than anyone. Could she really have been so naive to think they would be ignored by the Dark Lady? Perhaps she had been in denial for a while, or maybe she just never believed that there would be another, so hateful and cruel and so soon after Voldemort. Could they survive another war? It had been something of a miracle that she, Ron and Harry had all lived to tell the tale. They had lost loved ones along the way. Who would they lose this time?
She tried push the thought from her mind and focus on the problem at hand. One step at a time. Reuniting their families had never been so important.
'I know you're right,' she said at last, staring into her hands. 'It's just... Hard. This is why more than ever we need to work together. All of us.' She looked up and studied Malfoy carefully. 'What do you propose we do?'

When Hermione asked what they could do, Draco could say nothing for a moment. While he was glad that he and Hermione were no longer enemies and perhaps even friends so, at least he hoped so, it stuck him as a bit odd that Hermione now asked him of all people what could be done to stop the Dark Lady. It was just so strange having the two of them working out a strategy together. But then he remembered why again... their children. It was all about the youth now, and it was really the likes of Scorpius, Rose, and others that brought these two together.
"Before the Ministry fell because it didn't fully know what it was dealing with," he said, finally answering. "It made itself weak, vulnerable. It was attacked from both without and within. Now I have one of the strongest witches in existence as my Advisor. I have two of the strongest wizards in existence as Aurors, one of them a Head Auror. And finally, I am a Minister who has not only seen darkness firsthand, but was once a part of it. What we must do is show the Dark Lady that this is not the same Ministry that Voldemort overtook. And we must start by searching out any within the Ministry who seek to betray us as I have no doubt they exist. Once that disease is removed from within, we will be a true force to be reckoned with... perhaps even unstoppable."

There was silence for a while as Malfoy considered his reply, to which Hermione took as a good sign. He was thinking it through - they didn't need any more rash decisions. She let him ponder for a while, taking a sip of her drink and studying him closely. This would determine if he had truly turned over a new leaf. His way of thinking would be become clear by his answer. He seemed a little taken aback by her question, though she supposed it was odd for them to be working together for once. It was strange for her too. This was the boy had tormented her through out her Hogwarts years, discriminated her for having muggle parents. It still hurt to this day, but times had changed and they had to forgive if they were ever to move on. There was a new threat now.
Hermione smiled. 'I agree.' It seemed he was taking the Government approach. 'But I think it should be done properly. You know there have been people in the past-' she stopped for a moment before continuing. 'Like... Like your father, who slipped through the Ministry's grasp because he claimed his innocence and they believed him. We can't let that happen again. I want no mistakes. If there are people who are willing to betray us, we must find them and know for sure. Perhaps this way we can save more lives.'

Draco could not scold Hermione for mentioning what his father had done. He did still love his father, as miserable as the old man had become and despite the years of corrupting Draco into darkness, but that didn't chance Draco's belief that his father had been in the wrong about a great many things, and one of them was infiltrating the Ministry.
"There are no doubt those as clever as my father was in the Ministry as well," he said. "We must make every effort to search them out... even if it might cause a level of discomfort in the Ministry in general. A little discomfort is a small price to pay to end this madness."
When the food arrived, Draco smiled a bit.
"Let us speak of something more pleasant over dinner, shall we?" he said. "The upcoming wedding of Scorpius and Rose perhaps? I've offered to have the wedding at the Manor. The Manor is a bit more vibrant than it was when... well you know." Draco would rather not go on about that horrid night in Malfoy Manor. He still had bad memories when he walked into that room. "And the size rear grounds is more than suitable for the large number of guests attending." Draco could only imagine how large the Weasley Family had grown with the addition of Arthur and Molly's grandchildren.
