Prim was excited for everything about the Eve of Lights Ball except for one little thing: she was going alone. She had really had her hopes that someone would ask her –anyone, a friend even, but unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to be. Still, she wasn’t going to let a thing like going alone get her down; at least, not when she had been looking forward to the ball since its date was announced. Prim got a nice dress – a tan, black, and white color block dress – to wear with black chandelier earrings and glittery black heels. If anything, slipping into that ensemble made her forget all about the fact that she was going to the ball by herself.
Grinning as she walked from the Hufflepuff Common Room, she could feel eyes on her as she moved, which was something she definitely didn’t mind. Primrose was usually recognized for her status as a werewolf, not for her attractiveness; having it switched the other way tonight led Prim to a good amount of confidence. She smiled as she walked out onto the lawns, looking up at the canopy of lights overhead. ”Wow,” she whispered to herself, grinning. Prim stopped daydreaming and looked ahead, admiring the beautifully set tables with floating candles and strung lights across the white tent stretching the grounds. The professors definitely outdid themselves; she wondered if all of the lights were a symbol of sorts, calling the missing Headmistress McGonagall home. If it was, Prim hoped she’d answer the call. All of Hogwarts missed the Headmistress dearly; Prim especially since the Headmistress was always so accepting of her condition and emotions regarding it when she needed to talk about them.
Prim sat down at a table and picked at the plate that appeared before her. As she ate, though, she saw something with lights moving in the distance. She stood and stepped forward to make to know what it was, and then grinned excitedly as she realized there were enchanted boat rides! Prim slipped out of her heels and went over to wear the professor was leading students in and out of the boats that floated on the water’s surface. She looked down into an already-occupied boat at the person sitting in it, shrugging her shoulders and grinning. ”Do you mind if I join you?” she asked, hoping the person, in fact, didn’t mind, and rather wished for company as she did.

Maddie had been disappointed to go to the ball alone. She had kind of hoped that Lyn would ask her, but it had turned out that he was going with someone else. She didn't know whether he had arranged that before they had met or not, but she had hoped that she could go with him. It was still quite early in the night and Maddie had felt awkward sticking around on the dance floor and seeing him dancing with someone else, so she had decided to get out of there, and the first place she had thought of was the boat rides. Maybe she would see someone she knew down there, and take her mind off things?
It had happened quite suddenly, her interest in Lyn, just from that one day in the music room. He was sweet, and musically talented, and he seemed genuine. There was something about the way he held himself that intrigued her. She wasn't sure if he felt anything at all, but she definitely felt interested in him. Still, she tried to take her mind off of that as she sat in the boat, happy to get away from the couples. Of course there were quite a few couples in boats already, but she sat in this one on her own, waiting for it to take off.
When someone asked to join her, Maddie looked up in surprise and saw another girl. "Sure," she said instinctively, happy for the company so she wouldn't look like a loner in the boat. She shifted over in the seat to make more room. "Do you not have a date either?" she asked sympathetically.
