In spite of all that happened since the beginning of the school year, Ellen was turning a new leaf. It was time to leave her heartache behind her and move forward in her life toward positivity. She wanted to be a good role model for her friends and to be someone they wanted to be around, not avoid due to her lack of motivation to smile. She'd recently been counting all the things she had to smile about: her friends, her family, the fact that she was chosen as the female champion for Hufflepuff house, and her classes were all that she could have hoped for. Dressed in a beautiful black glittered gown and black heels, Ellen strutted her stuff alongside Charlie Valdez, the male Hufflepuff champion, as they were announced into the ball. They parted on the dance floor, seeing as Charlie had his own date to tend to, and she found herself in the middle of the floor with students crowding inward as they began to dance. Needless to say, Ellen was beginning to feel very awkward and hoped that either someone asked to dance with her or her friends saved her from utter embarrassment.
(sorry it's so short!)

Maggie had been having reservations about going to the Eve of Lights ball. She wasn't sure how she'd feel once she saw her secret boyfriend getting friendly with other single ladies, that were probably more suited to his tastes. But her socialite mother apparently had different opinions about the dance. Maggie had received a dress from her mother, one that was 2,200 euros - Maggie had checked the price tag - and didn't have the heart to turn down the gesture. Her mother was always trying to shape and mold Maggie into a respectable, young lady with whatever chance she got, and it was getting harder for Maggie to deny her. Especially if she was ever going to tell her mother about her boyfriend, and his affiliations with the Black Army. Furthermore, after receiving the dress, Maggie had learned that as a champion she was required to attend the ball, so that was that.
After waving goodbye to her Gryffindor partner, Ryan Coote, Maggie looked around the dance-floor and quickly spotted Ellen Ackerby. Being the type of person she was, Maggie didn't even consider it being a bad idea to fraternize with one of her competitors. She walked over to the Hufflepuff girl, and greeted, "You flying solo tonight, too?" She crossed her arms over her chest, feeling another pang of annoyance towards her dress. For the cost of it, it did a poor job of keeping her chest covered. She kept having to readjust it, and it wasn't a good look for her.

Ellen's anxiety started to kick in, but it quickly faded as the Gryffindor female champion, Maggie, came over to her. Her heart stopped fussing about and she managed a smile, forgetting that eyes were on them for a moment. The music started and she could feel people moving away, which meant that she was a little bit out of the spotlight. With Maggie there, as well, Ellen seemed to be calming down a bit, which was exactly what she needed. "Yea, but it's alright," Ellen answered. "Can't have a date to them all can ya?" she chuckled. In truth, Ellen had never had any date accompany her to any Hogwarts occasion before, really, so while her words rang true, she wished they didn't.
"It's so surreal being picked isn't it?" she asked, curious if Maggie was just as nervous about the whole situation that Ellen was. Maybe if she had been picked with someone she knew well, Ellen wouldn't be so nervous. But, the whole point of the tasks is to show you can work as a team to represent your house - how was that possible when you barely knew your partner? Ellen wondered what difficulties her and Charlie would have through the tasks, but she hoped that they would be able to get through them together. She was anxious and nervous about the tasks, but thought if she could power throught hat, then her and Charlie could go far in the tournament. But tonight wasn't so much about the tournament itself as it was celebrating that it was happening. And at that particular moment, Ellen was just glad she wasn't celebrating alone.
