Of all the plants the Fourth Year students had learned about, Hennah's favorite had been Gillyweed. She was fascinated by what it could to do to help people breath underwater and wanted to learn more on how to grow it simply so she could use it when her mother and her went to this beautiful lake back home. So via a quill and paper of course, she asked Professor Detterding if she could stay after and learn more about just how to grow it.
Sitting there in the Greenhouse, she began to feel she was getting the hang of it. She would of course not know how well she had done for a while, as it took Gillyweed some time to grow as it did other plants. However, she hoped it would be ready to use by the time the weather began to grow warmer.
As she worked, she looked about the greenhouse. It was so pretty with the variety of plants there. She took a moment to step over and admired some of the Asphodel flowers on the other side of the greenhouse. She smiled as she smelled one. She loved their scent.

One would think with his family background that Shen would know more and be better at working with magical plants then nearly anyone else in his year, but alas it was no so. Born without a talent for plants, he was only okay at growing them which is why he knew his future would not be in that direction. he had learned all the facts over the years from helping out with things in the nursery so he did know a lot more then most in his year about plants which was why his grades in the class were still very good, but his execution needed that little touch he could not grasp. Ah well, it just meant a lot more work after classes.
Arriving in the greenhouse, Shen hung up his cloak on a peg at the door and set his bag underneath it pulling out a book with the place marked for his project. Walking over to the back he noticed the fourth year he had been told was very reserved and he said to her "Greetings, Hennah, working on a project?" He kept his eyes on her till he had seen her respond before he got his own plant and brought it over to the other side of the worktable. "If I don't spend extra time with my own they have a tendency to fail miserably," he said with a smile.
The plant was droopy, he could tell from the leaves. Now, did that mean too little water or too much? had he made a mistake again? Opening the book past his marked place he looked up leaf signs to see if he could tell easily enough to fix the problem...

Heenah smiled as she looked over at the boy who entered and greeted her. She had met him at the party, and discovered he was the boyfriend YiXue spoke of. He seemed nice, which was good because YiXue was so sweet to her and she felt YiXue deserved a good boyfriend.
When he asked about her class project, she shook her head. She then took a notebook and wrote on it with her quill. She then handed him a piece of paper reading:
No, we've already done our Gillyweed project. I'm just doing this for extra practice so I can grow it at home.
She did nod in agreement when he spoke about how sometimes one needed to spend extra time with something to avoid failure at times. Being one who had lost the ability to speak, she had to make extra efforts at magic that others students didn't. She was learning Non-Verbal Magic at the time, which was an ability she HAD to possess to be able to fully utilize magic.
Hennah looked over at his plant and book as he read. She then pointed to herself as if to say "Can I help?"

It didn't take Shen to realize the reason he had been told she was reserved. He saw her face as she shook her head and then started writing on a piece of paper which, he now realized, was not her homework paper. She had some stashed nearby and as he read what she showed him he caught on. "Oh! Ah so you have a use for gillyweed then at home?" He handed her back the paper and limped and got the plant while she wrote, stepping over to her side to see the answer before he went to open his own book up. So, she could not speak for some reason. For a moment he wondered if it was from magic or if she was born that way. In his own disability he had often thought it would have been easier to grow up with it then to know the freedom to run and climb before he lost it. Trying not to dwell on such thoughts he glanced up when he caught sight of her movement out of the corner of his eye and then smiled back. "If you have a talent with it, I wouldn't mind. My family is very good at working with plants, but I'm the one who got skipped over with it."Then he remembered she was a year younger then him and he glanced at the fanged geranium, which was fortunately too young yet to have blossomed fangs. "Should be safe enough, it's a fanged geranium, not sure if you have run across those yet. It's still just a little thing tho, not very big yet." He scratched his head as he walked back around to his book and flipped a page. "I was trying to remember if a slight wilt to the leaves was a lack of water or too much, I can never remember..."@hennah

Hennah nodded at Shen when he asked about her using gillyweed at home. She motioned to him, pretending like she was eating some and then making swimming motions, pointing to her neck to also pretend she had gills.
Hennah frowned about Shen not being as good as his family when it came to growing things. Hennah was not perfect, but she was learning. She shrugged a bit to indicate she would at least try to help him as best as she could.
Even though Fanged Geraniums were taught to Fifth Years, Hennah had read a bit about them. She listened as Shen spoke of being confused over whether or not the wilt in the leaves were due to a lack of water or too much. Hennah tried to remember what the book said for a moment, then remembered. She made a hand motion in indicate "little" and nodded. She then spread her arms out to indicate "a lot" and shook her head, telling Shen that for those, it was wiser to just give them a little water and never too much.
She then took a water pitcher nearby and poured just the right amount before smiling at Shen.

Communication in such a way was a new thing for Shen, though he fell into it easily enough. It was, like all things, part of respect for others to meet them on their ground and it just meant he had to do some thinking. And as he watched he saw that she tried to do as many responses with gestures as possible rather then use the paper; he would have to keep an eye out for those. "Ah so you must live near a large body of water. Lake? Or Ocean?" That was certainly easy enough!
He saw it and shrugged. "Let me start off by saying I have thirteen brothers and sisters. Almost all of them have a green thumb, so I know a lot about plants as my father runs a nursery, but I'm not so good at taking car of plants. So my skills just go into other directions I think, not so much growing things." He shrugged again; everyone had limitations in different ways and she surely had some of her own.
"Ah! So you have read about those then?" He interpreted her gestures out loud to show what he was getting from it. "So these don't need much normally? But how do I know if it's had too much in the past then? I was thinking the leaves were an indicator..." She poured out a small amount of water and he sighed. So much for checking first. Smiling ruefully he thanked her for her help anyway.
"So do you just enjoy swimming a lot or does it have a purpose more then that for you growing the gilly at home?"

Hennah nodded at living near a body of water, then made a "L" with her index finger and thumb to indicate "Lake".
Hennah then listened to Shen go over his story about his family and how he wasn't good at taking care of plants. Hennah wasn't sure how to respond, so she smiled and patted him on the shoulder to show there was no judgment from her.
When Shen asked if she had read about the Geraniums, she nodded, then shook her head to indicate the plants didn't need much water normally.
When he asked how to indicate whether or not they've had too much water, Hennah grabbed her own Herbology book after she watered the plant, and opened it to the chapter on aggressive plants. She showed a diagram of the Fanged Geranium to Shen which explained what signs to look for. Hennah had of course already made sure before she watered it.
(Being vague here, sorry.)
When Shen asked about another purpose for the Gillyweed, Hennah shook her head, then wrote on a piece of paper again.
I just use it for swimming. There's not much more you can do with it really.

As she indicated a lake, he nodded, imagining it made sense well enough. "I thought maybe you grew underwater magical plants in your lake or so for sale or maybe your family used them a lot. I do believe my family has a water room which has gillyweed being grown in it if I remember right." As she responded he knew his judgement was right as she was not reserved at all, just not a talker. He could understand however how someone had made that mistake.
"Ah, I was wondering. I know quite a lot about plants, I'm just not as interested in them as I am in energy studies and Chinese magic," he shrugged, knowing she would probably never have heard of either. Shen didn't really study things that others found fascinating! "Still it's good to comprehend the basics I guess. Do you have a favorite subject or is this it?" He was curious what she wanted to do some day for a job, but he wasn't completely sure himself what would happen in his own life so he didn't ask.
As she opened her own book and showed him, he respected the fact she knew this subject very well. "Very good! You certainly know the subject well. I appreciate your help!" He made a few notes, writing down the information so he would not forget it later on when it came paper writing time and then looked back up at the plant and made the notations he was supposed to for the project. When he had finished, he stood back up awkwardly and limped back to put the plant back. Finished he came back and asked "Is there anything I can help you with somehow? Or are you all good?"

Hennah'e eyes widened and her jaw dropped when Shen spoke of the water room his parents had. She was highly interested in that. She then gave a "tell me more" look.
She also seemed interested when he said he studied Chinese magic. She always wondered how people from around the world did magic. One time she saw some girls from Beaxbaton do a magical dance performance in London and it was really cool.
When Shen asked what subject was her favorite, she wrote something down again:
I like Potions and History of Magic, but I really enjoy music more than my school subjects. I play the piano. If you'd like, I can play for you some time.
Hennah smiled about helping Shen. She loved helping others. She gave him a thumbs up. When he asked if she needed help, she wrote again.
What subjects are you good at? Maybe there is one or two you could help me in. If not, maybe you can tell me about Chinese magic. I'd like to learn more about it.
She then smiled at him again. She really liked Shen. He was so nice. No wonder YiXue liked him so much.

Seeing her look, Shen grinned. "It does sound neat doesn't it? It's called hydroponics and it involves water coming into different tanks, filled with minerals and vitamins added to it. Circulates around the roots so they grow in water not dirt. They do really well, especially the water plants." Her interest in his own studies of Chinese magic and energy flows was something he didn't catch however, at least not yet.
Reading what she wrote down, he nodded. Most students didn't care much for History of magic which was one of his better classes, but he had a real interest in knowing why something was done a certain way. As to music he found it nice enough, but nothing that he really had a serious interest in. He suspected, however, that having a girlfriend now was going to change that a lot. "Charms, Astronomy, and History of Magic."
Hesitating he admitted after a minute "I do know a lot about dark magic curses because my family has been attacked, but I'm not a fighter myself so my grades in Defense aren't so high."

Hennah was eating the info Shen gave her up. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was already planning to have her own water room some day, though that was being added to a number of other things the girl wanted to do. Being a skilled Pianist was still at the top of the list though.
Hennah smiled when Shen nodded in response to what he wrote. She assumed he meant that she could play the piano for him. She hoped so anyway. She loved playing for other people. She nodded back at him when he said spoke of the subjects he liked.
When Shen spoke of his family being attacked by a dark curse, Hennah's eyes widened, she grew pale and she began to shake a bit, grabbing her own throat as she remembered that horrible night that she lost both her father and voice. She quickly sat down on a nearby stool and tried to calm herself. She then looked back at Shen, now seeing him as something of a kindred spirit.

She seemed very interested in the idea of a water room and Shen decided he would have to find a way to take a few pictures for her to have in case she ever wanted one of her own. "I'll try and remember to make a few pictures for you so you can get the idea in your mind. If you want to write me a few days into the break I can make a point of going in there. The last half I won't be home but over at YiXue's, so you need to do it early on, okay?" He was sure her piano playing was lovely, but he wasn't anxious about hearing it either. His time with YiXue tended to fill up his mind as they grew closer.
Suddenly at the mention of his near-death experience, she began to shake alarmingly! Shen quickly touched her shoulder wondering what he could do to help her feel better. "Don't worry, Hennah, clearly I survived!" As she settled into a chair holding her throat he bent over, still trying to seem comforting. "It's okay, really! He got killed in that fight so he can't bother anyone ever again, I promise. He wasn't expecting a half dozen wands going off at him from our house."
He took some pride in that fact too, though it was the confusion of the attack which had really taken the dark wizard out. Why he had chosen to attack them was still a question, but Shen knew living in the past was something that one just couldn't do. "And everyone in my family survived so nothing to focus on. Just a dark point in the past, but we live in the present. Right?" He had not mentioned his leg which he doubted was important nor had he realized her voice could be the same sort of issue.

Hennah smiled and nodded when Shen spoke of writing him. She then blushed a little when Shen spoke of being with YiXue. She touched her heart at that. telling him she was happy he and she were in love with one another.
Hennah then shook her head when Shen spoke of him surviving the attack and how his family was okay. Granted, she was happy they all were, but Shen didn't understand why she was so shocked by the story. She grabbed her notebook and quickly wrote on it:
I was attacked by a Dark Wizard. He took my voice so I couldn't scream. He also took away my daddy.
She frowned when she wrote that last part. Her voice she had learned to live without. Her father was another story though. There wasn't a day that went by that she didn't miss him, not a night that she didn't wish she could cuddle up with him again and listen to some silly story he had made up or heard somewhere. Fighting back tears, she looked back at Shen. She pointed to him, then her, and then wrote in the notebook again:
We're the same.
She then reached over and hugged him again.

As he watched her, he found himself studying her way of speaking instead. It was...subtle in meaning sometimes as some concepts probably did not translate well or did so differently with each person. When she touched her heart after he spoke about YiXue he took that to mean she felt good for them both, but he wasn't completely sure he had that right. It could have been her expressing some sort of female emotions the way they got all romantic and emotional about things. It could complicate things a lot when different people had different reactions he could see. That might add to the impression of her being aloof.
She caught up her notebook and began writing and when she turned it to him he read, his eyes widening. "Why would someone attack you?" he asked surprised and then stood and put his foot on his chair, pulling up his pantleg so she could see he wore an artificial limb for his lower leg. "Goodness, you lost your throat, I lost my leg. Fortunately I was the only one who got hurt in our family, I'm sorry you lost your father, Hennah." She wrote that they were the same and he could not but nod with that. In a way they truly were.
Half-expecting it at having seen her eyes getting a glisten to them, Shen opened his arms and hugged her back, feeling sorry still for the loss of her parent. He would have been very much hurt should his father or mother disappear so he could sort of see the issue for her. "I am sorry for you that we are the same, Hennah, I can't imagine losing my father. That would hurt a lot."

Hennah looked at his artificial leg and just solemnly nodded about it, imagining how difficult Shen's life must have been since that happened. She wasn't try to make out like she had it worse. She knew everyone went through trials in life that affected them in different way. No one was forbidden to feel better or worse than another.
She held on a moment with the embrace, as tears were now coming down her eyes due to the emotion of it all, and due to how kind Shen was in returning the hug and telling her how sorry he was that she lost her dad. She then wrote a response to his question about why the Dark Wizard attacked them:
I don't know. We were out for ice cream one day and he showed up. I heard later he had just escaped from Azkaban. He was so mean to us. He tried to put a scorpion on me, and I am so scared of those. When I tried to scream, he stole my voice.
