Christmas had come and gone. Wrapping paper and boxes had been carefully opened. It was a strange sight, such carefulness coming from the body that had caused a neat little pile of gently folded wrapping paper. No one would expect Lorcan Scamander to have made such a thing, not with the way he was viewed. But he was by himself, it was permissible. Those days though, they passed quickly. The boring days of being left to own devices. Those days were spent with Lorcan actually enjoying studying, reading a book that had no pleasure reading to it. Days were spent outside in the nippy wind that caused him to layer up in sweaters and winter cloaks. Lorcan had actually entertained himself.
Those days were gone. School was going to start back any day now and students came back from holiday. There was one person that he wanted to see and he had sent her Elim, his bat, with a letter telling her to meet him after dinner in the Room of Requirement so they could have some alone time. Since finding out Caesar was the guy she was going to marry he was determined to make as much of her time, his as well. He didn't enjoy speaking to Caesar anymore. His once best friend was now his worst enemy. Maybe one day that would change but until that day Lorcan was happy keeping Rosalie to himself.
Dinner came and dinner went and up to the Room of Requirement. He didn't know for sure if she was coming to meet him but he was hopeful. If not at least he had this small cozy room with a fire to himself. The room had made itself into a nice comfy sitting room like place. The fire sat across from the couch and a large rug that donned a coffee table on top of it. The fire blazed and the room was a perfect temperature. Off to the side there were makings for tea and Lorcan had smiled. He was happy to have such a cozy room to be able to spend with the girl he loved. Rosalie would always hold a very special place in his heart and he knew that very well. Rosalie Harper would probably always have a piece of his heart. She would be a person that would have a strong influence in his life even if they weren't meant to be in the end.
Lorcan had a good amount of his mother's personality. He trusted in things that may not have been real but most of all he trusted in a set path for him and that everything had a purpose even if other people believed in chance. There was a reason for Lorcan and Rosalie, Lorcan just didn't know what that reason was. One day he could figure it out but for now they were in it until it ended.
That was the hardest part, knowing that your relationship was going to end. How did one deal with it? Well honestly it was just easy to ignore. Why didn't he just end it then? Because he was going to make the most of the time he had with her. He was in it for the heartbreak, but that was okay. He was trying to prepare himself for such a thing.

As she had stepped off the train that led her back towards her last term of Hogwarts, the Hufflepuff had many different…feelings. On one hand, she was almost done with schooling. There would be no more unnecessarily boring books that made her want to throw herself off the Astronomy Tower. On the other hand, her days of feeling free and, well, unbounded by obligations were almost over as well. Then again, so were her days of living in her family home. It wasn’t that she hated her family. Rosalie absoloutely did not hate her family. She just didn’t get along with them half the time, the only exception being Edward. Without him, she wasn’t entirely sure what she would have done with her family. They hadn’t allowed her to write very much – unless it was to Caesar, but she hadn’t particularly wanted to write to him as they had been chilled to one another. She’d drafted what must have been about 30-40 letters to Lorcan. Most of them she had stuffed into a shoe box and hid that in her closet; the unfortunate few that hadn’t quite fit found their end via the end of her wand.
Thankfully, as the group made their way back up to the school, she felt a new sense of independence course through her veins. She was very much aware of the turmoil she’d probably feel before the term ended, but she was very much determined to spend all the remaining time that she could with Lorcan. Her previous correspondence with her fiancé weighed heavily on her mind, as well as the regret of not being able to speak to him. She wouldn’t trade her time with the Ravenclaw for more time with the Slytherin Alumni. It wouldn’t have been fair – she had the rest of her life to be Mrs. Montague, and only a couple of weeks to be Rosalie Harper, Lorcan Scamander’s girlfriend. They’d almost arrived at the school when a familiar bat made its way towards her carriage. She ignored the fifth year who gave a frightened gasp behind her in favor of grabbing the letter Elim addressed to her. When she read it, there was little she could do but grin brightly and fold the letter to be carefully placed inside of her bag. She hadn’t been paying much attention to the people who were with her until they started, politely, asking her about her letter.
She’d hurried down to the Hufflepuff dorms as fast as she could to change into some fresher clothes. She’d changed into a new outfit her sister had, begrudgingly, given her for Christmas. It’d made her feel awful as she had definitely not thought to get her sister anything at all. Still, she’d checked herself over in the mirror once before nodding her head. Rosalie had been stopped in the common room, of course. She would have felt incredibly rude waving off all the people who asked her about her break and waited in that awkward silence for her to ask them how theirs were. She must have wasted a good ten to fifteen minutes before she was able to excuse herself. From there, it simply took her until she was able to get all the way to the seventh floor from the dungeon. She’d had to take a break on the fifth floor, and she was pretty proud of herself for making it that high to begin with. Rosey hadn’t exercised over the break. Going up all those flights of stairs had taken more out of her that she would have thought. Still, with most of the Hufflepuff students down the stairs, she didn’t have people interrupting her anymore.
It made finding Lorcan all the easier. When she finally managed to get the Room of Requirement to reveal its door, she was grinning brightly. She picked at some invisible lint on her top before clearing her throat. “Hello, Lorcan.”

Lorcan watched the blazing fire. The flames danced against his blue eyes. He was dazzled just a bit by the flames. Lost in each movement they made. Why didn't he go home for Christmas? Lorcan had decided that every year previous to this one was spent at home for the holidays, just one year he wanted to say that he spent the holiday by himself. Well as by yourself as one could get. Instead this holiday he was greeted by such a boredom that drove him to read books, not even the for fun books, the study books that he despised.
During the times that Lorcan tried to avoid the studying he found himself trying to find new parts of the castle. Being friends with the Weasley and Potter kids made even that a bit difficult. He'd seen the Marauder's Map, he knew most of the castle as is. But still this place was best to explore when you were left on your own. There were things that you could see with your eyes, not by looking at a map. There were shortcuts you could take and he even found himself down in Hogsmeade a couple of times buying some sweets from Honeydukes.
The one thing though that would have made his holiday better was if Rosalie had been here at school with him. A smile came to his face at the thought. She really would have been the perfect person to have around for Christmas. And he hadn't realized that he was a bit lost in his thoughts because when Rosalie came in he hadn't even heard it. His eyes stared off at the fire until he heard the clear of her throat and her voice telling him hello.
A jolt came through his spine and he sat straight up. A smile came to his face and he made to stand up. ”Rosalie,” he said with a grin. He moved around the couch to take her in his arms. She was such a perfect sight. His arms slowly moved around her for a tight hug and he kissed the top of her head. ”How was your holiday?” he asked her. They may not have had a lot of time left in the end. But there was one thing for sure. This time was going to be the best they could spend together. He gave a large smile. ”I missed you! And I've gotten you something, but that can wait a moment.” He honestly just wanted to stay there and hold her close. The longer they stayed here the more time they would have, or at least that's what it seemed like.

She had to swallow the lump in her throat. Mostly because she felt that she couldn’t just go and clear her throat and hope that that made everything okay. She thought that she would be okay doing this. She thought that she’d be able to look at Lorcan and somehow forget everything that had happened over break, but it was kind of hard to do so. Still, when she saw him grin, a part of her wanted to melt. Part of her wanted the Room of Requirement to realize that what she wanted most was to be swallowed up and deposited wherever it was that things tended to disappear to into this room. Out of existence would be nice, she thought. There would be no family there. No family meant that there wouldn’t be any drama to follow her around and wouldn’t that be nice and dandy? And, then Lorcan hugged her.
He hugged her and he kissed the top of her head. He pulled her into a tight hug and all she could do was wrap her arms around his waist and smile back at him because it was hard to try not to. It was hard to try to be serious when he looked at her with that incredibly cute and satisfied face. He looked at her as if there was nothing in the world he would rather do than be with her. It made her want to cry. It made her want to tell him not to look at her that way. That, yes, they should enjoy each other’s presence. They should be happy with the time that they got, but also that he should remember that, eventually, she was going to have to break his heart. She wanted nothing more than to remind him that he needed to guard himself, not make himself that available.
So, then Rosalie did what she thought would be the responsible thing to do. She buried her face into his chest and smiled because it felt nice to be in his arms and not wonder if he hated her. “Oh, you know. It went as well as I could have expected.” And probably better in hindsight, but also probably worse and it made things more complicated. She had wanted to make her mom sweat it out by picking a black wedding dress. When that was denied, she had tried for a peach one or an egg white one. She hadn’t wanted a dress that was specifically white, but her requests had been denied. She’d also been smacked on the head by Edward about it, but that was all in good jest, she hoped. “I saw Thalia and Andrea during the break, so that was fun. I didn’t have to spend it all alone with my family. I think Edward appreciated that the most.”
That and the moments that Caesar had taken her out of the house so that she could try on the blasted dresses; she still hadn’t quite figured out which one she wanted. She was sure her mother would make her pick come February, at the latest. “Oh, I have a present for you, too.” Rosey’s eyes widened a little, and she fought the urge to smack her own forehead. “I’m sorry. I forgot to bring it. It’s in my trunk. I was in such a hurry to get here I forgot about it.” She frowned, mostly because that was unlike her. Well, that and she definitely wasn’t going to be able to make the trip down to the dungeons only to have to climb up the stairs. Who knew? Perhaps Hogwarts would be incredibly unkind to her and decide to change every one of the stairs around so that she’d have an even more difficult time climbing all the way up here. “Maybe we can get them to each other tomorrow?”

Lorcan knew he shouldn't have wanted her so much. But she was the girl for him. She grounded him into the man that he should be. She may have tamed the beast inside him. But Lorcan was who he was and he couldn't help himself. Until the world crashed down on him in a few short months, he was going to soak as much Rosalie in as he could. She was going to be his until they got off the Hogwarts train at King's Cross and went their separate ways. He was pretty sure that was where he would take the opportune that his parents offered him to travel before he got a real job. He was prepared for that moment though. He was prepared to hurt. But for now he was to enjoy what he could with her.
He felt her face push into his chest before she spoke to him telling him that her winter was as well off as to be expected. ”You'd be surprised, mine was spent studying,” he grinned with a bit of a chuckle. She purposely held out the actual wedding information. His blue eyes scanned her carefully. ”You did shopping, well as close to shopping as your family gets, what kind of dress did you pick out?” he asked. He was growing up, or at least he could portray that person who was actually curious. Maybe he was actually curious. Maybe he actually wanted to know what was going on other than how they were in their own relationship. Maybe it would make it easier when the time came. ”I saw Thalia and Andrea during the break, so that was fun. I didn't have to spend it all alone with my family. I think Edward appreciated that the most.” Lorcan chuckled. ”I'm assuming they're well?” he asked. Thalia was a nice person, a little uptight with her studies, and going out with Wallace Sinclair, well that was a shocker in and of itself. And Andrea, well he'd never spoken much to her but she was Nicholas Flint's younger sister and their oldest brother had just also been arranged into a marriage. He wondered how well that was going.
Then Rosalie told him that she also had a present for him but she left it in her trunk. She suggested that they could give them to each other tomorrow. Lorcan nodded. ”Yeah, presents tomorrow, sounds good,” he said softly with a smile. ”It was boring in this castle without you, I didn't have a good reason to try and make Caesar mad, he wasn't here much for the holiday either, or at least I didn't see him much if he was,” he told her. Maybe talking about Caesar while they were together wasn't the greatest idea. Instead he decided to shut up and he grabbed her hand to pull her over to the couch. ”Come on, let us catch up,” he said as he sat down and went to lean up to kiss her lips. All he wanted to do was spend as much time with Rosalie as he could. The next few months he was going to spend all of his time with her.
This was the end. Every story had to have its ending. They were in the homestretch. He could nearly see the finish line that waited ahead for him. A plan was the next important thing for him. While he waited for the other shoe to drop, he could figure that out. That way when it did drop he knew how to fill his mind without the depression. Without being upset. A plan, that was all he needed. Maybe he also needed to speak to someone about such a plan. He had friends now he just needed to utilize those people.
