First thing first Helena detested her name. She refused to be called by it expect by her mother, who refused to call her anything but it. For a matter of fact if you call her Helena she might just hex you. Don’t tell her father that she knows that stuff though. She had given herself the nickname Alicia in her first year at the muggle primary school and it had stuck. She really had connected with a few muggle kids and kicked off a few good friendships. Back in her youth she openly disgusted her witchy abilities and of course kids being kids, her friends were quite impressed. For a matter of fact one of the primary friends, Kasey Campbell, turned out to be a muggleborn. Quite a shock for Kasey’s family being they were both muggles and American, luckily Neville managed to help the family understand.
Helena hated living above the Leaky Cauldron. She hated alcohol, the smell and the way people acted when they drank. She loathed small cramp spaces. She couldn’t wait to get to the house or to Hogwarts, whichever came first. She preferred to stay with her dad at the house than with her mum at the pub. She could do without the man-eating plants but if it meant being able to breathe she was happy.
The stories Helena’s father told her are what truly made a deep connection between the two. She was drawn to the stories of her grandparents, her dad’s years at Hogwarts, and the Second War. Most little girls like fairy tale stories with happy endings but not Helena. She preferred stories that were real, and ones with true heroes. She wasn’t turned off by the gory stuff that was in war stories or the tragic endings of stories with real heroes in it, they seem to die in tragic ways. Stories helped her through tough times. When she was feeling sad, she’d ask her dad for a funny story. Leave it to her dad’s misfortunes to make her smile. Well, it could always be worse.
Misfortunes seemed to happen around the greenhouse. Helena seemed to always find a way to get in a deadly situation, which her father would have to save her. Like man-eating plants, poisonous plants, inhaling fertilizer and passing out, getting locked in there, and a few times getting covered in very hard to remove goo. As much trouble as she had with plants she tried but she wasn’t very good with them.
Plants weren’t Helena’s only misfortune in her life. She really sucked at flying. She’s gotten bucked off a broom, taken to Bristol and back unable to stop, flung from, fallen great heights from, being dropped in a lake, and having her broom start on fire. Even before her first Flying Lesson at Hogwarts she preferred to keep her feet firmly pressed on the ground.
One can only assume that Helena’s talents were a throwback to her grandparents or great-grandparents. She really was quite talented with magical creatures and music, which neither of her parents were truly great at. But that’s not what stumped her parents so much. It was the fact she excelled in Potions as much as she did. But she did quite enjoy Charms and Transfiguration. She didn’t really try in Defence Against The Dark Arts, she could certainly do quite well if she tried. She did find History of Magic interesting but would much rather be able to do her own research. She really epically failed in Herbology, Divination, and Astronomy. Alicia got five Outstanding Owls (Charms, Care of Magical Creatures, Potions, History of Magic, and Transfiguration) , one Exceeds Expectations (DADA) , and one Acceptable (Herbology), and one Poor (Astronomy).
Helena never understood why she was in Gryffindor. She was quite shy around most people and easily backed down to avoid conflict. She was actually quite friendly once she got to know someone and they stopped looking at her like she was a saint or something. The downside of being Neville’s daughter, either people stared or laughed at her, or even worse of all compared her to her dad and grandmother. Sure she was like them a lot but also was her own person, no one understood that. Well, anyone whoever laughed at her seemed to leave her alone afterwards though, she never knew why but she had a feeling at had something to do with Jasper. Sometimes she wanted to hold her ground and fight for people but the nagging feeling of disappointing her parents would be when she got a detention kept her from doing so. No one ever took her seriously. And she wanted to change that. She had to. One way or another. She seriously wondered why the Sorting Hat had barely touched her head when it shouted Gryffindor. She was lot like a Ravenclaw, she thought personally. She loved to read, liked a challenge, and enjoyed research. She sometimes though she was speaking to baboons when she was with Gryffindors, especially Gryffindor girls. It’s like they have no intelligence what so ever. Okay no all Gryffindor girls are shallow and foolish.
Helena was very close with Neville. She was a lot like him in ways she’d never understand. She lacked confidence like her father, which honestly she had no reason to and it only hindered what her magic is capable of. She was timid around people, like her father in his early days. She really sucked on a broom, like her father but her mother wasn’t very good either. She had a big heart, like her father. She was nothing like her mother. They often ended up being polar opposites with opinions and beliefs. She has brown hair and blue eyes, which she doesn’t know where it comes from since her mum has brown eyes and her dad hazel.
Jasper and Helena were quite close. Despite the fact she was annoyed about how loudly and obnoxious he was as a kid. Not to mention how mean he was. But Jasper got over that and so did Helena. Now what annoyed her the most was how protective he was. She’d never admit it but she was a bit jealousy of Jasper. How he could just get along with mum and how talented he was on a broom. She kept that to herself though, it was normal for siblings to be jealous.
Hannah and Helena were not very close at all. Hannah was critical of how bookish Helena was and always nagged about her grades in Herbology. Helena put up with it for the most part until this summer. When it burst into a huge yelling match between Helena and Hannah in the upstairs apartment at the Leaky Cauldron. Helena grabbed a few of her things and stormed out of the Leaky Cauldron. Which lead her to stay in a muggle hotel where she made friends with not so savoury characters and went on a short exploration of muggle drugs. If her friend, Kasey, hadn’t come looking for her and had been able to track her down before anyone else or she spiralled out of control. Either way things would have gotten ugly. After one very long weekend Kasey and Helena made a Unbreakable Vow never to mention this to anyone. Right before going back to school their sixth year Kasey vanished and no one knew what happened to her. Kasey’s parents acted as if they never had a child. It really bothered Helena and she was determined to find her friend or to find out what happened.
