Helena was excited her be able to be at Hogsmead again, she barely visited her fifth year. This year wasn’t nearly as stressful academically at least. She had other stressful things but it wasn’t as bad. She was worried about Kasey. She was worried about what was going on. She had taken it to herself to join in the same group her father had once been in but not for that reason. She knew things were changing and she wanted to be ready. She wanted to prove to people she just wasn’t just the ‘baby’ Longbottom but a witch that could take care of herself. She put her Honeyduke’s candy into her pocket of her navy blue jacket. She shivered as she pulled open the door to the Hog’s Head. Why had she chose this place to meet her dad? She didn’t want to say where she stood and what group she may or may not have joined but she hoped just maybe her dad might get a hint to ask or even better figure it out without asking. She sat down at a table. The place was a bit dingy but she didn’t really mind. She liked places that weren’t overly crowded, such as the Three Broomsticks. She also didn’t want people creeping on her trying to listen in to their conversation. It has happened in the past. There was barely anyone here so no one would pester her dad about the Second War either. She ordered a Butterbeer before her father should show up and insist on paying. It was quite annoying. She was more than capable of paying for her own drink. She knew he meant nothing by it and was just trying to be nice but Merlin did annoy her. She’d always let him do it when he was with her though. She didn’t want to be rude. She tapped her feet as she waited for her dad. @neville Outfit

Neville had gone to Hogwarts that day to meet with Professor Detterding over various Herbology business. Though he had retired from being a Professor, he still loved to be involved with the school and various major Herbology projects there. He also used the time to meet with his beloved daughter, Helena. Neville and Helena always had a strong mother/daughter relationship. She was his pride and joy. He loved Jasper too of course, and was very proud of his accomplishments, but Jasper always seemed to be closer to Hannah, Neville's wife and Jasper and Helena's mum. Neville was surprised that the Hog's Head was the meeting place as opposed to the Three Broomsticks. Neville steered clear of the Hog's Head in his student days, but now it wasn't as unpleasant a place as it was back then. Times had changed. Still, he was curious about the choice. Walking it, he stumbled on a nail that had been poking out of the floor for decades. Most knew where it was and avoided it, but Neville proved just how infrequently he had been there. He blushed a bit, looked about and smiled at his daughter before walking over. "Hello Helena," he said, sitting down. "It's nice to see you again. I...I mean I saw you at Christmas of course, but I've missed you... of course." Despite being a skilled Herbologist and a celebrated hero of the Battle of Hogwarts, Neville was still one who had trouble with stating things. HELENA ALICE LONGBOTTOM

Helena’s mind was spinning by the time Neville had arrived. She was wondering if she should tell him what she had joined or not. She had been continuously nervous ever since she made an Unbreakable Vow last summer. She was more nervous than ever since Kasey disappeared. What if Kasey told then was killed because of Helena’s fear of her parents finding out what she had done. She couldn’t even stand what she did, there was no way she could tell her parents. Even thinking about that disappointed look in their eyes made her want to curl up into a ball. Her mum would never let her hear the end of it. Right before Helena could start thinking herself into an anxiety attack she heard the door creak open.
That nail was seriously going to hurt someone one of these days. She tried not to laugh. She was used to her father tripping on things. She isn’t sure how he survived the days when she and Jasper left toys all over the floor. Her heart sank a little when thinking of Jasper. She felt like they barely talked anymore. She supposed that this happened to all siblings. But it still made her sad. She smiled over at her father pushing away her thoughts of Jasper. Another time, another place.
“Hi dad,” she greeted, turning towards her dad. “It’s nice to see you too dad. How’s mum? Any more plants decided they like to eat anymore robes?” It had become a joke from a very terrifying experience as a child when a plant tried to eat her. Maybe that’s why she’s never been that good with plants. She simply ignored her father’s faults. She had always known them and therefore simply just didn’t notice. As a child she thought her dad was a superhuman or something that was incapable of faults. But as she got older she realised he was only human. All children realise that eventually. But she still admired her father and would never lead on to her ever noticing his faults.

Neville smiled a bit when Helena asked about Hannah. "Your mother is very well, busy as ever at the Cauldron," he said. His eyes then widened nervously as his daughter joked about the plants, not picking up on the joke very well. "Oh no... don't worry. We built a special room in the greenhouse for those. Just be cautious about going in there and you should be fine." Neville also recalled the time one of the plants almost ate Helena. It scared Neville almost to death and he still got the jitters when he saw the particular plant that almost took his cherished child from him. "So how are you... school going well?" he asked, trying to change the convo quickly and his voice showing it. "Is your Herbology coming along well?"Neville nodded to the waiter when the butterbeer arrived and was about to pay for it, unaware that his daughter was going to. HELENA ALICE LONGBOTTOM

Helena rubbed her forearm trying to avoid her father. Clearly that was not the joke to use. She reminded herself that event was different when she talked about it with friends or Jasper. She felt like she had made it really awkward. Oh well, it wouldn’t be a chat with dad without it being awkward. She wished she hadn’t brought that up. She couldn’t do anything about that. Well, she wasn’t much different from her dad honestly.
“It’s easier this year,” she replied. She was glad not to be taking Herbology and Astronomy anymore. She was much happier taking classes she did well in. She wasn’t sure what she was going to do with her life. She knew a lot of jobs needed Herbology but there was no way she was going to pass NEWT level Herbology. Barely passing with her OWLs was hard enough to explain but failing would have been unbearable. She paled when her dad mentioned Herbology. What should she say? Should she lie or tell the truth? Should she pretend like she didn’t hear her dad? Merlin, she was hoping this wouldn’t happen though there wasn’t much hope given her dad’s career. He was going to ask after she took her NEWT’s at the latest.
She opened her mouth to speak as she saw her dad reach to pay for the butterbeer. She took a deep breath. She didn’t want to upset her dad. “Dad, I can pay for it,” she offered. She knew most likely that he wouldn’t let her pay but she was going to try.
“And dad I dropped Herbology this year,” said Helena rather quickly. She knew if she didn’t say it now she never would. She couldn’t lie either. She could pull of lying to her mum or if she was really scared or it was a big deal. She knew he was going to sad she dropped it. But she couldn’t help she was bad at it. All the help in the world wasn’t going to help. He had to understand that. She knew he wouldn’t be angry. She had never seen him angry with her.

Neville was glad to know that school was becoming easier for Helena. That told him how bright she was, and he was so proud for that. He knew his daughter was destined for greatness whatever she went on to do, even if it wasn't in Herbology. "That's really wonderful, Helena," he said. "But you know I'll help you whenever you need it. That's one thing the Muggles have over us I suppose. How we can't always be there to help you... that is to say our children with their homework."
Neville felt odd having his daughter pay for the drinks. However, Neville was not really one to argue, especially with family. "Oh... okay," he said. "I'll pay... next time then. Thank you, sweetie." He gave a small smile. Even though Neville was good with Helena pursuing the career of her choice, Neville was distraught to find out she had dropped Herbology. For her to not have the interest at all... it sort of broke his heart. "I... I see," he said. "Why... why did you drop it... if you don't mind me asking?" He tried not to sound upset, but it came out in his voice significantly. HELENA ALICE LONGBOTTOM

Helena felt a knot in her throat when Neville agreed to let her pay. She wasn’t pleasantly surprised. She just felt like she was always freeloading on her parents though she was still a kid and they still had to care for her. It was hard to explain for her, she barely understood it herself. She reached in her pocket and pulled out a few coins. She really didn’t count out in detail but she knew how much she had brought, how much she had spent, and how much butterbeer costs. So she was quite certain she gave the waiter the right amount.
“Dad, I’m complete rubbish at Herbology. I really do try and I still barely pass. I kill every plant I have to take care of, most of my grades were because my partner saved or took care of it or the professor took pity on me. I don’t know how many times I’ve gotten weird goo on me that I don’t really want to know what it was and not to mention all the strange hybrids experimental plants that decide to spit poison at me. Wait, that wasn’t even in class. I just do better with different things, though I don’t know where I get my abilities for those things,” sighed Helena. There wasn’t a plant that she took care of that didn’t die. She supposed she was too nervous around them. She got tense and skittish around plants. Either she was scared of them biting, eating, or poisoning her or she was scared of hurting them. Of course, she knew plants didn’t have brains and she was pretty sure most didn’t feel pain but she hated the idea of hurting anything. She used to have a hard time with potions until she learned most ingredients were already dead or had no intelligent or brain activity besides movement and eating, but even at that she has to be sure and still has a hard time dropping a squirming creature into boiling water. She remembered sobbing after the first time she had to use a live ingredient in Potions.
She could see the hurt in her father’s eyes. It made her uncomfortable. She wanted to turn into a hedgehog and curl into a ball. But she wasn’t going to act like a child though. She wasn’t going to run away or hide because she had upset her dad. Sometimes you upset people. It was a tough concept for her but she knew if she didn’t accept this it would get her into trouble.
“Anyways, I want to show you something,” said Helena. She had been learning this since the beginning of the year. With lots of mishaps. She knocked someone out summoning a heavy object and got another object magically stuck to her hand and it wouldn’t come off. She didn’t know how the nurses in the Hospital Wing got it off. It wasn’t any type of spell she had heard before. She was going to try to do this outside of Hogwarts and in front of someone for the first time. She hadn’t even got it to work properly on her own. She took a deep breathe. “Accio six napkins,” she said. A small pile of six napkins flew in her hand. She had learned to be very precise otherwise you will get an infinite or random amount. And quite frankly she didn’t want all the napkins in the Hog’s Head. She smiled excitedly when she was able to lay the napkins down without them sticking her to hand. It had worked! It had worked nearly perfectly!

Neville was sad to hear she dropped Herbology, but understood her explanation. He understood some people were no good at some things even if their parents were. He learned that during his short time as an Auror. He could never quite live up to how brave and true his parents were in the profession. He was sure they would understand had they been alive, so now she should show his daughter the same understanding. He smiled and took her hand and patted it. "It's okay, sweetheart, it really is," he said. "You go and find what you're good at and work on that... and I'm always proud of you and your brother. Really, really proud." Neville stopped when it hit him that Helena probably got the message and he was now just idly rambling. Neville then gave a curious look when his daughter said she wanted to show him something. "Oh?" he asked. He then watched as she displayed her new ability. "Oh my... Wandless Magic... you've learned Wandless Magic? That's brilliant, Helena, quite brilliant!" Neville had tried to learn Wandless and Non-Verbal, but both ended... not well. So he stuck to being good at Herbology. HELENA ALICE LONGBOTTOM

Helena beamed at Neville. She was relieved to know that her dad was fine with her dropping Herbology. She loved her dad but sometimes she felt like she never like she could fill the Longbottom shoes. She supposed everyone felt like that sometimes. She just had to keep trying.
Helena gave a small smile towards Neville as she turned a light shade of pink. The unconditional praise always made her blush. She felt like she didn’t deserve all the praise her dad gave her. “Thanks dad. I’ve been working on most of this year. It’s never actually done this well before. After a few trips to the Hospital Wing, don’t worry dad I’ve never gotten hurt, but I did accidently knock a person out when I tried summoning a chair,” she said. Last year when she was studying for OWL’s she was researching Wandless magic and learning all she could. She also had to find a professor who would help her get started with it. She didn’t want to end up in St. Mungo’s from doing something wrong.
She had always excelled in Charms and she quite enjoyed it. Though she was pretty good at Transfiguration she never quite loved it as she did Charms and Care of Magical Creatures. She would love to work with animals though there aren’t just that many jobs when it came to magical creatures. She was glad that she did so well in Charms because now she was able to do wandless magic, which she never thought she would be able to do. All this thinking of classes reminded her for something she needed to ask her dad.
“Oh yeah before I forget. Dad is it alright if I get a different cauldron? When I got a new cauldron this year I accidently bought a collapsible one. It’s quite dangerous when it decides to collapse and spill boiling potions on me,” she asked. She knew her dad wouldn’t care but she always asked before she bought something larger than a book or potion ingredient.

Neville wanted to say something about the incident with the chair, but could he judge Helena given the number of fumbles in his own days at Hogwarts. "Well... accidents happen I suppose," he said. "Once I almost blew up Sheamus in Potions when I put the wrong ingredient in his cauldron, and... well once I thought I killed Harry Potter when I thought I gave him the wrong type of Gillywig." Neville blushed a bit at that. "So... yes... accidents happen."
Speaking of cauldrons, Neville listened as Helena spoke of her faulty cauldron. His eyes widened a bit about the potions spilling. "Oh no!" he said, sincerely worried. "We can't have that! Spilled potions can be very dangerous!" He then took out some galleons and began to hand them to her. "Go buy one right away! No... no wait!" He placed the galleons back. "We'll go together! More time to spend with you!"HELENA ALICE LONGBOTTOM

“Dad, I’m fine. I had on protective gear so all it did was make me feel warm. No was hurt besides maybe my grade but I’ll get it once I turn in my essay,” said Helena wanting to hit herself in the head. Why hadn’t she just gotten it the cauldron without asking? She sighed. Sometimes she just didn’t think things through. Though the idea of going out and buying a cauldron without making sure it was alright just didn’t feel right. She loved her dad dearly but sometimes she felt like was walking on exploding cauldrons trying not to set off his protective father mode. “Anyways most accidents are harmless. It isn’t a day of my life something doesn’t happen. I couldn’t tell you how many times I trip on the rug in the Gryffindor common room or how many times I am reading a book while walking and I walk into desk and few times even in walls,” said Helena. She wanted to tame the situation again. She wasn’t much good at it but she could try.
She was glad she had picked the Hog’s Head now. At least, no one she knew had to see her dad act like this, it was so embarrassing when people were watching them. She was meaning to try to leave hints for her dad. She hates keeping secrets from him. But that was pushed off towards the side. She chewed on the inside of her lip. How was she going to keep this a secret from him? She twirled a strand of her hair around her finger.

Neville felt silly when Helena spoke to him. He had a number of times. She was so bright and clever, so was Jasper, but he was often still the same Neville Longbottom of old- overly worried, overly cautious, and overly awkward. Perhaps this was why Helena wanted to go here and not to the Three Broomsticks where the other students could see what a goofball he was acting like. "Here," he said quietly and calmly now, handing her the galleons. "You can go and buy it without me if you want." Neville tried not to look so pathetic, but he was just too ashamed of overreacting as he had. He listened as she went over the accidents she endured. Upon hearing them, he reminded himself not to act overly concerned again. "I'm sure you are careful when it really counts," he said, trying to sound more positive. He then sipped his Butterbeer, almost as a way to shut himself up. HELENA ALICE LONGBOTTOM

Helena felt guilty now. She knew her dad just cared about her, and she appreciated the gesture. She smiled at her father. He tried so hard and she could see that even when things failed epically. She wished she was better at showing that she knew what he did for her and she appreciated it.
‘Dad, if you really want to come with you can but you don’t have to if you are busy,’ sighed Helena. Moves and countermoves. That what it comes down to when Helena dealt with her family.
‘Have you heard anything about Kasey?’ asked Helena. Kasey had been missing since the start of the year. Helena was starting to get worried she wasn’t ever going to find Kasey, or even worse she’ll turn up dead. She had tried her parents, whom swore they never had a daughter. She’s tried everyone, even muggles, they were friends with. But it was like Kasey just vanished, or like she didn’t want to be found. She feared Kasey was dead, that was the big factor in Helena joining the DA. Unlike what people assumed, she didn’t join because her parents had been members. She joined because she wanted to become a better duellist, and to prove that she wasn’t like any of the rest of her family, she was Helena no one else.

Neville smiled a little when Helen said he could go with her if he wanted to. The way she said it made him feel a bit better. It sounded as if she wanted him to go... well sort of. "I'm never too busy for you," he said. And that was true. Fortunately he had a job that would allow him to see his children and spend time with them almost any time he wanted to. Neville then lowered his head when Helena asked about Kasey. While he was in the Order of the Phoenix, he had heard nothing about. It wasn't as if the Order wasn't trying to find her. They were, but even the Order could only do so much. Even they couldn't perform miracles all the time. "I'm sorry, Helena," he whispered. "I haven't". He was sad to say this. Even though he was no longer an Auror and that kind of work was no longer fully part of his life, he felt shame that more couldn't be done for the poor girl known as Kasey. "But we haven't given up... the Order I mean. We'll find her... I pro... we'll keep trying to find her."HELENA ALICE LONGBOTTOM

Helena smiled at her father. He had always made time for her. She did love to spend time with him, but she also liked to do things with her friends, and by herself. She didn’t have a desire to be around people all the time. She need some alone time, some times. She also knew that sometimes you just have to spend time her family, though there wasn’t a time that she could recall that wasn’t a holiday when she spent time with her mum. But she wasn’t here with her mum. She was here with her dad. She forced away thoughts of her mum, she wasn’t going to ruin today without even being here.
‘It’s alright dad. I wasn’t expected much anyways. Maybe, maybe, it is best we don’t know,’ said Helena. She remembered her dad saying he had joined the Order now. Then why would he care she joined the DA? But she knew that isn’t how he would see it. But was it breaking any rules telling her dad about it? She didn’t know. She couldn’t find the words to say it anyways. ‘Or maybe I should try someone else that has connections’ she whispered under her breath to herself.
