There was no question amongst the Hogwarts staff, that Griffith was most commonly found in his classroom, rather than his office. He preferred the open air of the fenced in outer portion. And so did his foxes, Rikash, Gwydion and Siren chasing each other around, chattering loudly, much to the disapproval of Myfanwy. And as usual, Caerwyn was there, trotting back in forth, spreading her wings restlessly. The pure white Hippogriff had already went through her thorough grooming today, every feather meticulously straight and her hinder quarters brushed. She was practically gleaming. And no doubt in a few hours, they'd take their daily ride over the grounds, and he'd have to help her straighten them again. But he'd never complain. Outside of classes, these darlings were his life. Magical and ordinary animals alike. He would take any of them in.
Griffith laid his hand on Caeryn's black beak as she came up to him, finally settling down behind his shoulder, to watch the foxes play with barely disguised disdain. Not a uncommon expression for her. But it was slowly lightening up as they adjusted to each other. Though no doubt, if it were any other owner, she would have eaten them in a heartbeat. But Animal Affinity cleared that right up. Mostly. She still looked tempted sometimes. Sarasi was still nursing and would be for a while, Capuchin Monkeys did for up to fourteen months. It was Gwydion going still and Caerwyn shifting her weight that alerted Griffith of someone approaching. But he only gave a brief glance towards to door, before carefully distracting Caerwyn, redirecting her attention by tossing a dead ferret to the other side of the field for her. It worked and she was munching on it happily when the Gameskeeper and previous COMC teacher walked through the door.
Griffith shifted his weight and gave his usual reserved smile to Hagrid, not even bothering to wonder why he was here. It was either a message, or just to get to know him. But Caerwyn was trotting over again, clicking her beak warily, and his foxes were gathering at his feet, except for Rikash who rushed over to greet the newcomer in his typical, loud fashion.

Hagrid was content that he had done his time as Care of Magical Creatures Professor. Had he missed it? Of course he did. But he was too old to take on both the job of Groundskeeper and Professor those days. The students needed a younger and well-educated fellow like Professor Crewe. After all, they still had Hagrid as Co-Supervisor of the COMC Club, which Hagrid enjoyed a great deal. One thing he enjoyed about it was showing the club members new creatures whenever he could. There were many that were shy and only came out if one like Hagrid was around. Usually the Half-Giant could convince the creatures that the students meant them no harm and were only there to observe them. That was the point of his visit to Professor Crewe that day, besides just idly chatting as Hagrid loved to do in general. Walking in, he smiled at Crewe and waited until he was invited to sit down before doing so. He also smiled at the creatures coming out to meet him. "Hello Professor Crewe," he said. He then looked at the creatures again. "Hello you lot. Keepin' our Magical Creatures Professor company I'm assumin'?" He chuckled a bit and then looked at Crewe. "Beggin' your pardon if I'm disturbin' ya, Professor, but I wanted to run the next club meetin' by ya. Some of the members have been askin' about seein' the Clabberts and I figure this is as fine a time of year as any to see'em pendin' yer well and good with that."GRIFFITH ANDRAS CREWE

Griffith smiled, stroking Caerwyn's beak as she came to stop against his shoulder again, looking considerably more pleased than she would have without the distraction of her favorite food. But as is, she was still looking distinctively displeased. No Hippogriff was instantly fond of strangers, but Caerwyn was young enough to still be unexposed and thus particularly wary. But she was improving rapidly, and so Griffith didn't bother to do anything more than gentle reassure her as he gestured for Hagrid to sit down. "Hello Hagrid, pleasure to see you again." His tone was light as Rikash ran closer to Hagrid, no longer yipping, just waiting eagerly for any attention he could get. His youngest and most hyperactive fox. Made even more evident by Siren and Gwydion watching in stern disapproval.
He knew very well that his pets' aloof but usually friendly attitude was highly influenced by him, but really it was safer. Kept them away from humans that might do them harm. Griffith smiled as Hagrid spoke directly to the animals, Rikash yipping as if in affirmation and Myfanwy stuck her little beak out from his collar and chirped happily. For once she was awake despite the time of day. He had his entire group except for Sarasi, who was still young enough to be in the inside part of his office. Sleeping most likely, because young or not, the monkey's lungs were more than good enough to be heard from outside. Griffith took a seat on one of the many stools in the field, Caerwyn promptly settling down beside him.
He tilted his head to the side, a gesture that could undeniably be compared to a curious dog, as he listened to Hagrid. Clabberts, something he was planning to put in one of the upcoming lessons. "Clabberts? I certainly don't see why not. And if their asking about a specific creature, there is no chance I'd say no to teaching them about it. I trust you can acquire one without trouble?" Griffith asked, as Rikash trotted back to him, his excitement for animals shining through.

Hagrid laughed a bit when Crewe asked if he could get a hold of a Clabbert for the meeting. "'Course I can, Professor," he said. "Got a whole mess of'em out behind my shack. Lil' buggers got to where they're expectin' fudge flies every time I show up. 'Fraid I got them hooked on them candies." Hagrid chuckled at that too. Hagrid then sighed. "Was hopin' I be able to get hold of a unicorn for the members to see, but they've all but fled when they got wind of this Dark Lady business," he said. "As you recall, when Voldemort was about, he was makin' use of their blood and all. All the creatures seem to be on alert in fact. Can't say I blame'em. CAN'T say I blame'em."
Hagrid of course had a habit of rambling and repeating himself on occasion. It did get a bit worse with age. GRIFFITH ANDRAS CREWE

Griffith smiled and nodded, chuckling a little. "Thought you'd say something along those lines."
And then he frowned as Hagrid began to talk about unicorns. An absense he had noticed when flying with Caerwyn over the forest. It made the place look a great dealer darker. He made a thoughtful noise and leaned back a little, his eyes elsewhere for a moment.
"I may be able to acquire a few for a short while. Allow the members to see them and study them, then get them back to their homeland. I have been hoping to include it in my classes." It wouldn't be easy, but more than manageable to do without any stress on the unicorn. He looked up at Hagrid, waiting for his opinion on the matter. "And yes, they are all on alert. I've been waking up in the middle of the night for weeks now, because of the animals in the forest having false alarms."

Hagrid was glad to hear Crewe could get a hold of some of the unicorns from elsewhere. He hoped none of them had felt in danger of being hunted by the Dark Lady as well. "Good to hear, Professor," he said. "If you need a hand, you know where to find me. I have a great deal of time durin' the winter months with not many plants to tend to. Might as well make good use of it."Crewe sounded grim when he spoke of the animals on alert and how it disturbed it. Hagrid had to seat himself and sighed a deep sigh. "Thought I was the only one in that predicament," he said. "Been gettin' three, maybe four hours of sleep at the most every night. One night I stayed up 'till near sunrise comfortin' little Boldfeather after somethin' strange startled him a good bit." Boldfeather was a young Hippogriff Hagrid had bonded with from the time the creature was born, and was almost like a father to him. GRIFFITH ANDRAS CREWE

Griffith nodded, already considering the closest place that would likely have unicorns, undisturbed by the Dark Lady. He'd ask his mother to handle to whole thing, so he could stay at Hogwarts. And they would find the transfer more peaceful if it were handled by a woman, even one as tempestuous as his mother. Somethings Animal Affinity just didn't quite make up for. Griffith smiled, gratitude showing at Hagrid's offer. "Help is always appreciated. I'm considering doing Thestrels sometime this year, but the local herd doesn't know me and to be perfectly honest, I can't see them. I could shedule it for winter if your intested?"
And then he turned grim as Hagrid spoke again, a small shiver waking Caerwyn enough for her to raise her snowy white head and click her beak at him, before he shut down their connection enough to let her fall back asleep. "I have Animal Affinity. It's not just the noise, I can feel their distress whenever I let my guard down." And he nodded in understanding, four hours of sleep would be lucky, with how easily startled the animals were. "Thats why I'm never without these little ones anymore. Only Sarasi is young enough not to be effected." He said gesturing towards the foxes and the Saw Whet owl on his shoulder, before gesturing towards his office to indicate the little monkey that Hagrid probably didn't even know about. Something he had a habit of doing.

Hagrid's eyes widened just a bit when Griffin spoke of not being able to speak with the Thestrals or being able to see them. One could only see them when one had witnessed death, and Hagrid had seen more then his share of that in his long lifetime. "I might be able to have a little audience with'em," said Hagrid. "'Course it'll still be a bit difficult to show'em to all the students, but I'll see what I can do." There really wasn't much to do if some of the students had never witnessed a death, but Hagrid was merely trying to sound positive. Again, Hagrid knew exactly what Crewe was going through. With Affinity, he had learned how to bond with most every animal on the grounds. He could feel their pain as well when something was terribly wrong. "As can I, Professor, as can I," he said. "With the time I've spent with all these creatures, I'm practically one of'em."He then looked about at the animals in the room as Crewe spoke of them and smiled at the lot again. "You're doin' a fine job with'em, Professor," he said. "I can tell just by lookin' at'em."GRIFFITH ANDRAS CREWE

Griffith could see the surprise in Hagrid's eyes. He knew it was strange, but he'd always been distant from the war, all his time was spent at Hogwarts or in Wales. At the family estate with his eccentric mother and ever patient father and endless amounts of animals. His dogs and nifflers and horses and ferrets and crups and so many others that he couldn't even count them all. But magic allowed him to care for them all, and as long as they had a suitable habitat, they were happy. And most of them were rescues.
Griffith smiled, nodding. "Thank you, hopefully I'll have managed to dispell any misconceptions about Thestrals they'd normally have. I have spoken of them before."
It was Gwydion that finally decided to scramble up into hid lap. The stately silver and black fox dropping his aloof nature for once to settle, dignified and graceful on his lap. Griffith nodded grimly, knowing that the depth of Hagrid's empathy where animals were considered could easily be compared to Griffith's Affinity.
Then Griffith smiled, the compliment was always nice when coming from anyone, but it was something else when it came from someone like Hagrid. His animals were the most important thing in his life. They were a responsibility, and one he would never complain about.
"Thank you Hagrid, that means a lot when it comes from you." He reached down to stroke Caewyn's sleek feathers, while Rikash and Siren looked up at him, reacting to his emotions more than the motion.
"Why don't we take this inside? There is someone I need to take care of, and I think you'd like to meet her."

(No worries. For some reason I thought they were inside. Whatever you want to do.) Hagrid gave a nod of you're welcome when Griffith thanked him for trying to help about the Thestrals. Hagrid decided to change the subject a bit after discussing the gloom that came with the Black Army. "Reckon we're lookin' at a heavy snow for another month," he said. "Means most of the creatures in the forest are still hibernatin' so reckon that'll halt the club meetin's again. Figured you and I could use the time to perhaps plan a day trip for the members in the Spring, let'em see some of the creatures outside of Hogwarts."Hagrid always loved the day trips out. Not too terribly far from the school where areas where a multitude of magical creatures lived that the students had never even laid eyes on before. Hagrid of course loved visiting them and going on about them to the club. GRIFFITH ANDRAS CREWE

Griffith rose as Hagrid began to speak again, running his fingers over Caerwyn's feathers while trying to convey his request that she stay put. Gwydion was alright walking calmly towards the door, ignoring Rikash darting past him to get inside and Siren's brisk trotting. Out of all of them Gwydion was the oldest, but he'd always been calm. The doors were still wide open, but a simple spell kept the heat inside. His classroom was different than most. Wide open space and ground that was dirt rather than stone. Several small pens were in the corner behind his desk, empty for the moment but reserved for animals small enough to study inside.
It was up against his desk, sheltered from any breeze that might come through and held in a small crate that his real treasure was. Griffith gestured for Hagrid to take a seat anywhere, pausing in his way towards the desk to listen. And then he was wearing a flashy grin, one that would probably make his students nervous and give them the impression that they would be studying something along the lines of dragons. If only. "Any particular ideas?" Griffith asked as he walked around the desk and gently lifted up the blanket covering the crate.
And there she was, the Capuchin monkey was only a few weeks old, with her spindly limbs wrapped around realistic stuffed animal. Something to make up for not always being with her. And as he reached to lift her up she opened her eyes and stretched out her arms for his hand. Normally wizards would consider muggle animals to be dull, but Griffith had always seen the magic in them. Especially in creatures like this one. He lifted her carefully up, cradling her small body in the palm of his hand as he walked back towards Hagrid.
"This is Sarasi. She's not quite as interesting as some of the creatures we deal with on a daily basic, but one can't deny that she's wonderful. She's a Capuchin Monkey, only a few weeks old, an orphan."

Hagrid was happy that Crewe was interested in his idea about another day trip, but when he asked the half giant for ideas, Hagrid found himself stumped. "True me told, ain't too many places we haven't went before these days, unless you want to trek them off into Eastern Europe," he said. "Perhaps Durmstrang wouldn't be opposed to them seein' some of the creatures what roam about their grounds."Hagrid smiled at the little monkey as Crewe held him. "A fine lookin' creature Sarasi is too," he said, very gently petting the monkey. "And quite fortunate of you to have a good friend like the Professor here, ain't it, Sarasi?" Hagrid chuckled a little. "Couldn't tell ya how many motherless and fatherless creatures I've taken in over the years. Tragic of course for them to lose their mums and pops, but makes'em all the more lovin' to ya when you take them in."GRIFFITH ANDRAS CREWE

Griffith chuckled softly, and then perked up at the mention of Eastern Europe. "I'll see if I can dig up any family contacts that attended there." Griffith said, running his thumb gently over Sarasi's small, furry head as she blinked up at them. Sarasi was always quiet, from the time his mother brought her over.
Griffith smiled, looking down at Sarasi with fond eyes. She did look healthy, a great deal more than when he'd gotten here. He nodded softly, a mixture of sadness and joy in his eyes. At least half of his animals were orphans, and each one of them bonded closely to him. Accepted him and his parents as family. The seperation anxiety took time to work past, but it was always worth it.
"I can imagine, I have at least fifty at home, under the care of my parents. And both of my owls and all three of these darlings were orphans." He said waving a hand at his foxes.

Hagrid nodded when Crewe said he would contact someone about Durmstrang. Hagrid had been there before and while the folks there could be a bit stiff and lack personality, they were friendly and gracious enough. Perhaps they could travel to France as well at some point, and Hagrid could visit Olympe. He still loved that woman and couldn't lie and say he didn't. "Alright then," he said. "Just give me the word and I'll make the preparations with the Knight Bus."Even Hagrid was amazed at how many animals Crewe had taken in. Hagrid was a friend to many creatures of course, but really the only "pet" he had was his Boarhound Sniffer. Sniffer was the only one he HAD to take care of as far as feeding and all that, not that he minded. He loved the big coward. "I admire you, sir, absolutely admire you," he said. "Takes a big heart to give so many of them a home."GRIFFITH ANDRAS CREWE

Griffith smiled, although shuddering a bit at the mention of the Knight Bus. He'd rode on that thing enough for two lifetimes already. But it was effective. "Will do, I think just before or after the Spring holidays would be best. On one hand we don't have to worry about time, on the other hand we'd certainly give them something to talk about when they get home." Griffith drifted to the back of his office again, digging around in the cupboard with one hand to retrieve Sarasi's bottle. Magically heated to the perfect temperature, and kept carefully sealed away from the rest of the questionably sanitary items he kept in his cupboards. Most of which was food for every animal you could imagine.
Griffith straightened and began coaxing Sarasi to eat with little trouble, she was well trained to bottle feed by now. Then he paused mid stride, smiling softly. "Thank you Hagrid. it's been like this ever since I was six years old. I brought home a litter of kittens I found abandoned, and after that it didn't take long for them to figure out that I had Animal Affinity. Then they all just poured in, and it wasn't like I would say no to any of them. And of course, magic makes it easier to keep them all fed and they mostly keep each other company. I only have a few that are dependent on human affection." He smiled at his foxes as he said that, and then down at Sarasi, who came from a extremely tactile species. But even his even, content tone couldn't fully disguise how much it exhausted him sometimes. But it was worth it.
