Emma,
Are holidays always this long or is it just because I am at my mom's this year? Next year I should just follow someone home for their holiday. New years party is at the school, you going? You should come with me, it'll be fun I promise. You'll come right? I promise if you don't have fun we can go do something else, but there will be fireworks and come on those are pretty awesome. So, meet me there, okay? I'll buy you what ever you want from the village on our next outing if you do.
- Shay
Shay had wasted little time in deciding to write to Emma about the new years party, who else would he go with? Well there was Harley, she was pretty but he didn't feel like asking her. There were the other girls of the house that always gathered around and asked if he would sing to them, sure they were sweet but they didn't seem like the company he wanted to keep to ring in the new year either. There were his classmates but out of them all, well, Emma was stuck in his mind.
Emma wasn't like the other girls Shay knew. Maybe it was just because she was deaf but Shay knew it was more then that. Emma knew him, she'd seen his good and his bad. Those moments when he felt nothing but anger towards his mother for leaving Andrew and him alone in the care of Myron only to waltz right back in to his life with a new family - a family that treated him as if he was useless as if he was some reject. She'd seen it all, and some how she knew how to make it feel less terrible. But, why was it that these days she lingered in his mind?
Shay had dated some in the past few years, well if you called it dating. With Myron as an example Shay wasn't sure he could ever be relationship material. But the thought had crossed his mind, each time he saw the way her lips turned up in to a smile at one of his stupid jokes, or the way she offered comfort when he found it hard just to carry on around the people who did their best to bring him down.
What was he thinking? Shay snapped himself out of his thoughts, he almost forgot that he was grabbing punch for the two of them. The music of the new years party was thumping in his ears - worse yet it was one of Myron's songs. "Merlin...never understand how they are still popular...." He muttered to himself as he got the glasses of punch and returned to one of cocktail tables where Emma was waiting and looking beautiful as always. Setting the glasses down he gave the table a tap to get her attention.
The light wasn't ideal but it was enough, or maybe it was just his excuse to get a little closer to his friend. Unlike with most people he talked to Shay made sure he looked at her, and did his best not to be lazy with his words. "They're playing my Dad, if they wanted a Wagtail they should have tired to book me - I am way better." He smiled as he came to the end of his words. Well at least he was allowed to stare with out it seeming too blatantly obvious.
"You know Emma, you look really - umm - what was that sign again...uhhh - beautiful?" He signed what he was sure was the sign for beautiful, or maybe it was amazing, of course he looked completely unsure he was using the right sign or even making the right motions. "That was beautiful, right? Because that's how you look, beautiful." How many girls had he told that before? Too many most likely, but didn't every girl want to hear that? Maybe he had said it to be nice to most the girls, to try and make them feel special but this time, well...she could never hear the way his voice sounded when he said it, she could only read sincerity on his face and actions - he only hoped that it came through the same way it did in his tone.
His hands always felt to utterly useless when he tried to make the signs she had actually taught him and that he had actually remembered. Though he knew more than he gave himself credit for - but after six years it didn't feel like enough sometimes, that some how he should have known more. She was his friend after all, his good friend, best friend, even more then that. He could play the guitar so why couldn't he manage some simple signs? Couldn't he do that for her?

Shay,
Sometimes the holidays can be long, especially when you miss your friends. I know you're probably not the happiest at your mum's, but I hope you're doing well. You should have asked me about the holidays. I'm sure you'd always be welcomed in my home. I was thinking of going to the party, but I wasn't too sure about it. Well, until I got your owl. Of course I'll go with you because I can't think of a better choice of company. I agree about the fireworks too. Even though I know I can't hear the huge bang that a lot of people seem to love, I definitely adore the array of colors from the display. I'm totally in and without the bribe of buying me something because I would never expect that of you.
- Emma
When Emma had received the owl from Shay, the young Hufflepuff had been sitting in the kitchen with her mother as the older woman made dinner for the family. She hadn't been expecting anything from anyone, but the fact that mail had come for her excited her more than she would have thought. She had opened the note with curious eyes that ran slowly over each word carefully, a smile easily and slowly creeping onto her lips. Her mother had seen it and asked about why she was smiling like a crushing schoolgirl which only made Emma smile more, a light blush accompanying it. It ended in a long conversation with her mother about the boy and how she should go with the flow and let things happen how they may. Of course, Emma knew this already, but she always got so nervous with boys, even if she had been friends with them for a long time.
Her brown eyes scanned the party, watching the students dance and mingle, making her wish she was outgoing enough to do the same. The feeling of nervousness that overcame her due to her shy nature was both annoying and frustrating. She wanted so much to get over it so she could enjoy more things with more people. If it wasn't for Shay asking her to the party, she probably wouldn't have gone. Still, Emma didn't regret her decision, as it was going to give her a reason to spend some more time with one of her best friends.
The vibrations she felt from the beat of the music distracted her slightly as she waited for Shay to return with the drinks. Her eyes continued to search around catching sight of some of the people she knew. That was, until she felt the tapping on the table, her attention immediately turning back to Shay who was now next to her. A soft smile appeared on her lips at the sight of the handsome boy trying so hard to make sure she could understand him. Not many took the time to speak slowly and actually face her when they spoke. Sometimes even the ones that knew she was deaf forgot to do so. "Welcome back, and thank you for the drink." She told him a bit louder than was usual so that he could hear her, her hands moving with her words as well. Chuckling lightly, she nodded at his words. "I agree with you. You'd be much better entertainment than the music they're playing now. But... I'm kind of bias." She teased softly, picking up her drink and taking a sip of it.
It came unexpectedly, the compliment about how she looked. Blinking a few times, she stared at Shay for a moment unsure of what to say. However, it was hard to ignore the fluttering feeling within her stomach, or the fact that her palms began to sweat slightly from nervousness. Why was she getting so bent out of shape over a compliment? Friends complimented each other all the time, so she shouldn't be overreacting over it. Emma pulled herself from her temporary state of shock and placed her drink back down. "You were... very close." She told him honestly. "But thank you Shay. You're very sweet. The sign for beautiful is this." Moving her dominant hand, she showed him the sign for beautiful. "And you look very handsome tonight, but it's nothing new." What did she just say? Sign? What did she just sign and say? It had to be her nervousness that came over her; that caused her to admit to the attraction she felt toward him. Not only that night, but on a normal basis. "Umm... Sorry. That was really out there. I don't know where it came from." She told him before going back to her drink to keep herself from talking anymore, the bright blush apparent on her cheeks.

"Of course, getting you a drink is the least I can do after dragging you out tonight! Be pretty rubbish of me to make you do it yourself." Shay gave a small laugh and pushed his bangs out of his eyes. It was hard not to stare, at least he had the excuse of it being so she could read his lips. Though he tried not to think too much about the way her eyes lingered on his lips, it could lead to a bit too much wishful thinking that maybe there was something more to that gaze, a curiosity that he would be more than happy to satisfy. Shay's lips parted into a wide grin when Emma said she was biased about him, "Love you can be biased about me till the end of time and I will never hold it against you." There was a certain swell in his pride that he got from her attention - it was different than that from other girls. This was Emma after all.
He watched as she corrected his signing, the way her fingers moved was like watching art. "Wow, Emma, sugar coat it for me that was not even close!" Well, he had been close but the joke just slipped out paired with that grin he always seemed to wear, "Well then, Emma, You look beautiful." He said as he made sure to use the right sign this time - maybe it was just an excuse to see if her cheeks would flush red again, or just one more reason to compliment her. What was he even doing though?
He was a bit caught off guard by her own return of a compliment, and no doubt it showed as he sipped on his drink and almost found himself choking. Smooth, Wagtail, smooth. If there was one thing Shay Wagtail did not do it was blush, so why was it that he felt his face burn ever so slightly. "Oh, no, I'm not, well I mean I am but-" Shay laughed as he stammered along. Merlin, what was wrong with him tonight? Was the punch spiked? The punch must have been spiked. He rubbed the back of his neck and smiled sheepishly. He wanted to read into her words, he wasn't sure why but he wanted it to mean more than just some friendly compliment exchanged between friends.
"You want to, maybe dance?" He said after taking a moment to gather himself. A day for history, the day Shay Wagtail actually found himself flustered and stumbling around his words. He knew Emma couldn't hear the music and only feel it but that didn't mean she wasn't able to dance - no it was more the people. His shy hufflepuff - his shy hufflepuff friend. "I promise I'll be right there holding your hand, you won't have to worry about anything, everyone is out there having a good time, and we will too. I promise." Maybe it was just an excuse to get himself away from a situation where he would say something dumb, or do something dumb. Then again he could still do plenty of dumb things while dancing.
He held out his hand to her and offered up a reassuring smile. "It will be fun, I promise, and if you're really worried then I will be sure to dance a hundred times more dorky than you ever could - keep in mind though might be more embarrassing for you because you'll be seen with me." He finished with a teasing little smile, hand out streched just waiting for her to take him up on his offer. Don't do anything dumb Wagtail. She wasn't just any girl after all. She was his Emma.
