one afternoon on a free period: middle courtyard
“Quite frankly I don't believe any of it!” her statement came with a distinct tone of certainty, hands falling to her lap along with a particularly large history book. Behind her glasses, Nerissa had to blink multiple times before her surroundings became clear again – she always forgot how startling it could be looking up after reading in the sunlight; the brightness of the pages momentarily blinding her. Sure enough, after a couple more blinks, the courtyard came into view. There were a couple of other students dotted around the pace, but she was the only one located to the large, single oak tree. Peering above, she frowned and watched the over-active grey creature leap from branch to branch while she spoke to it. Despite its playfulness, she continued talking, the matter of which being that of the behaviour of giants. She learnt about them back in her fifth year, but they caught her interest enough to read about them further – for that day anyway. Knowing Nerissa, she would be on to her next subject of interest before nightfall,
“I reckon giants are pretty decent characters, given the right education anyway. Just think our brains are like, this big--” as she spoke she balled her hands into fists and put them together to make the shape of a brain. Once she proved her point, Nerissa threw her hands up before laying back on the grass, her legs still in the sun and torso now shaded by the oak canopies above. “If all the knowledge we have can be stored into the size of two hands then a giant's brain must be able to hold...just, wow.” If anyone saw the girl, they would think she had gone completely insane – to be looking up and talking to a tree of all things. Of course she wasn't quite that mad, for it was the little squirrel nibbling at something in its paws that she was chatting away to.
To Nerissa, this kind of behaviour was normal. In her opinion, all creatures had a level of understanding so why would a matter of language prove to be a barrier? As assumed there was no response but the sound of the March breeze running through the leaves. It was a bit chilly out, but the sun seemed to last long enough to cast a warmth into the air. Arms by her side, her fingers brushed against the blades of grass, “Hey, do you think they have giant schools somewhere? You know, not schools that are giant in size but for giants? Though...I suppose...they would have to be giant to home giants... maybe they have outside seminars...”

YiXue was sitting on the ground in the lotus position doing her usual meditation. She breathed in and out, defeating the stress that came with the end of the year and the upcoming exams. "The sun is warm... the grass is green... the sun is warm... the grass is green... though sometimes the sun is hot and the grass can be yellowish or brownish... depending on the time of year." she said. "The sun is some times warm, the grass is some times green.... the sun is some times warm, the grass is some times green......"She opened her eyes and smiled before looking over to Nerissa. She rose and walked over, still smiling as she listened to the girl. She then saw who the girl was talking to. "Hi Nerissa! Hi woodland friend! May peace, joy, and good acorns come to you," she said. She then sat down by Nerissa. "I wonder if there are giant towns like with giant bakeries. Mmmm... giant cupcakes."NERISSA LORELEI HERRIN

"Oh, YiXue! Hello there YiXue." Readjusting herself to the presence of another, admittedly started by her appearance but not at all put off, Nerissa pushed herself up by the palms of her hands and curled her legs beneath her. With a smile upon her face, as usual, Nerissa giggled when she spoke to the squirrel just as she had - refreshed at the other girls conscious nature towards creatures. She heard that there were some with the ability to communicate with animals, specific ones that is - she herself always wished she behold that power, but alas it was apparently not to be. When the girl sat down, Nerissa's smile widened at the prospect of more company. More often than not, it would be suspicious stares or snickers that came her way from others. Their behaviour never put Nerissa off, but it made her feel warm to know someone else indulged in her amusements.
"Ooh, delicious! They would be the size of paddling pools, imagine all that icing...mmm. I would ask for a strawberry one I think. Vanilla sponge with strawberry icing, blue sprinkles and maybe white chocolate buttons. Because I mean, they would be their equivalent of sprinkles too wouldn't they? And sprinkles the size of potatoes!" It wasn't hard to make conversation with Nerissa who was chuckling at her last remark, particularly on the topic of sweet things; "Hm I'm all of a sudden looking forward to pudding later!"
Nerissa was quiet for a moment, simply luxuriating in a gentle breeze that came their way when she remembered what YiXue was doing when she first entered the lawns. She had seen the girl earlier but knew better than to interrupt, though she was very curious at the time. Something to do with crossing the legs, or was it kneeling down? Nerissa wasn't good at remembering details, however figured the basics of it wasn't too hard. Repositioning herself to cross her legs, Nerissa turned her round eyes to YiXue, "If you don't mind my asking, what was it you were doing earlier? It looked rather fascinating, I don't think I've seen anyone else sitting like that before."

YiXue was getting hungry when Nerissa mentioned the giant cupcakes from the giant bakery in the giant town. "What about a gigantic brownie with a gigantic scoop of ice cream?" said YiXue. "And yes, pudding would be excellent right now." YiXue had a bad habit of making herself hungry, often thinking about food during her meditation sessions. Speaking of meditation, Nerissa inquired about what she was doing and she was happy to explain, though she was surprised Nerissa had never noticed her doing it before. "Meditation," she said. "My mum and dad own a Magical Meditation Retreat. I've been doing it since I was quite young. It's very relaxing and puts you in a happy place whenever life gets a bit on the stressful side." She assumed Nerissa was probably as stressed as any student about exams . "Would you like to give it a try? Maybe I can show you how to travel to that place with the giant cupcakes... well sort of."NERISSA LORELEI HERRIN
