Jia Le didn't really get the party thing at this time of year. She had so many exams to study for and needed the peace and quiet. But no, her housemates, who were in that House because of their intellect, wanted to party. Jia Le tried to study in her dorm room, but the music was far too loud. Even cottonballs in the ears couldn't help. Finally, she sighed and dropped her Charms book.
"Well... if you can't ignore them... join them," she said. So she rose, quickly changed out of her pajamas and into some casual clothes, and made her way down. Her eyes widened when she arrived in the Common Room. Every student in her House packed the place! She had actually never seen that before. She fought through them to get some punch, hoping someone wouldn't make her spill it on the way to find a seat.

Aaron was somewhat bummed at the fact that the term was near its' end. The good thing though was that there was a party that was being held in the Ravenclaw Common Room, and he couldn't resist going. To have not gone would have been a bid to dismiss the obvious fact that there was no way to run from the end of the school year. He was about to be a 6th year, along with Matt, Mel, and the rest of the people he knew that were 5th years. It was about the only real relief that he got from that. His time at Hogwarts was almost done, and his goal was to teach, that much was certain to him. He'd teach regardless of whatever barriers might stand in his way. His only question, was what subject would he teach?
Dressed in a gray t-shirt, blue jeans, and black and blue sneakers, Aaron headed down to the common room and saw that there was already a few people present. He figured he was early, but to be this early was a bit odd as he normally wasn't. Well in this case early wasn't necessarily bad, so he really didn't have a whole lot of complaint. Sitting down in a chair off to the side, he figured he'd watch things for the start of the party, then decide what to do from there. Made no sense to him to just launch right into something.

Rollo returned to the dorm's common room by hoping down the stairs. It just felt like a good thing to do so he did, stopping on the last step a second before stepping into the rather large round room. This of course made his curlies bounce, but he ignored them as usual, trying to pretend they didn't exist. Anyone who had been facing the steps would have seen his playfulness which stopped on the bottom step as he then stepped in reserved again. Unaware of anyone watching however he felt his dignity was intact and walked over to see what was on the refreshment table. Picking up a plate he collected a few colorfully done jello squares and some purple deviled eggs before getting a piece of cake. However it wasn't till the end of the table he saw the fruit skewers and those he took several of, his eyes lighting up! He adored fruit and with a glass of punch he stood near the end of the table glancing around. Lots of familiar faces, not so many he thought needed company at the moment. That he knew well enough to sit with. A sip of the punch as he thought about where to sit and eventually decided on a space. Choosing a chair he walked to it and sat doing, as with all things, no hesitation. While not a lion, Rollo had no fear about normal things nor consequences, but then he again he had never dated. A glance around as he tried a jello square; the multiple layers of flavors (all berries) was quite good and he liked the fact they didn't seem to stick to his hands. Some kind of cooking magic he assumed. How would you learn that sort of stuff? They didn't have any classes in cooking here, did they? Looking at the person nearest him (a chair or two away) he asked "Hey! Do you know how they make things like this? Is there like a class in it or do you have to read a book for it all?"

Jia Le was sitting and sipping her punch, grateful no one had spiked it as she had often heard had been done at the Slytherin parties. The Ravenclaws were a bit more civilized that that. She turned as the Fifth Year boy spoke of her, asking her a question. That was usually something one had to be cautious about doing when around Jia Le. She could be quite helpful, but she could also talk your ear off as the typical know-it-all that she was.
"Oh, it's quite simple to make those," she said. "I've studied a number of gelatin recipes. While I have no interest in pursuing a culinary career, I do find the art of cooking quite intriguing and fulfilling. Anyway, here's the recipe."
Jai Le went through the steps, citing the ingredients, how much of each one added, and precise preparation instructions.
"And there you have it," she said. "I hope I was of some assistance. I'm Jia Le by the way."

Not being in her year, Rollo was not expecting the verbose answer he got in return, far more information then he would have expected! As she launched into the recipe his eyes grew wider and he realized this girl from another year (he assumed the one under his not over, but he could be wrong about that part) not only knew more about the subject, but could be his source for finding out more. "Goodness, you do know a lot about it it seems... What I was asking though was more to how do you learn about these more then how does it break down. Books, classes, what?"He found himself intrigued if a fourth year (as he assumed she was) could pick it up and memorize a recipe so well that he should be able to as well. "Well nice to meet you, Jia Le! Are you in the fourth year? I know I have not seen you in class before and I'm a fifth..." After she answered, he nodded in self satisfaction of having guessed right and said "Ah, a good guess on my part! I'm Rollo. Rollo Langlais." He guessed she was Chinese, though he would be hard pressed to know the difference in different cultures from over there. Of course being at Hogwarts made it far more likely she grew up in the UK. "Is there another subject you have investigated as completely? And oh, by the way, if I gave you a piece of paper can you write down which books you read about the cooking in? I'm sort of curious to know them myself now..." Sure, guys didn't do much with food preparation, but Rollo knew there were a lot of chefs in the world as well. And running a restaurant or a cafe type of place didn't sound too bad at all, especially a magic food takeaway. @jiale

Jia Le gave an "Ah" face when Rollo made it clear what he was asking.
"Well books help, but it also helps to have a large family with several experienced in the art of cooking," she said. "But for this recipe, I'm sure you can find it in a number of Muggle dessert books."
Jia Le nodded when the boy asked if she was a Fourth Year and said he was a Fifth.
"Yes, I'm a Fourth Year, though some believe I have the knowledge of a Sixth Year, or even a Seventh," she said. "Not that I like to boast, but acquiring knowledge in large amounts is a bit of a hobby of mine." She then smiled. "And lovely to meet you, Rollo."
Jia Le was now given the green light to probably unintentionally annoy Rollo to death.
"I feel I have a strong interest in most every subject taught here, as well as a number of hobby-related subject. I excel at trivia games, though I always welcome a challenge."

Rollo suddenly laughed out loud. "Ah good one! Yes, that would help a lot! I take it you come from a family of chefs then? Maybe run a few restaurants or something?" A glance at the snacks with a surprised look. "Muggle?" He touched one again and it was like a block, none of it melting onto his fingers. "But...it doesn't come apart when I hold it. It's really a muggle recipe?"He was quite floored, having assumed it was a magical recipe of some kind. Didn't jelly like stuff normally come off on your hands? Nodding in satisfaction he had gotten it right, he smiled back. "Sounds like it. I would never have a recipe memorized like that, it's pretty cool. And good hobby. Certainly can't hurt." Not knowing what he had stepped into, he did anyway. Long as she wasn't waking him up at two in the morning to tell him something new he would probably be okay. Which in some ways made him in more trouble since they shared the same house and there was nothing keeping a girl from going to the boy's dorm, but it was highly unlikely. However for the first time in this conversation he frowned. "Trivia? No, don't think I've ever been big into that. I'm more into specific knowledge which fits my life I think. Like, some classes I can see myself using the knowledge a lot, you know? So maybe I just like specialization more..." He was thinking on his feet here, but still. @jiale

Jia Le chuckled about being from a family of chefs.
"Well not exactly, though we always have excellent food on our table," she said. "My family is actually more interested in gardening." She then laughed when he spoke of how the gelatin worked. "Yes, it's quite amazing for a Muggle recipe, isn't it? But really in a sense, Muggles have their own kind of magic. If you think that's incredible, you should read about Muggle technology. Did you know Muggles have a method of allowing one to send a worded message to another who lives all the way across the world in a split second? I doubt any spell would ever allow owls to be that fast."
Jia Le shrugged about memorizing recipes.
"I'm sure you could in time like I did," she said. "I mean, you're a Ravenclaw after all, so you are no doubt quite brilliant in several areas."
Jia Le nodded about what areas he had knowledge in.
"Fair enough," she said with a smile. "You are quite pleasant company to be around, Rollo. I wonder why we haven't spoken before."

He heard her laugh and tilted his head at her a she spoke. "Ah well that is important too since all of our food comes from that in the first place. I think my mom would say knowing what everything taste like in the raw is just as important as knowing what it will go with from a recipe." His father was dea-- well, really dead, but his Uncle who was dead also told him frequently how good some flavors were that he had missed over the last century. Still, a gardener would always have an advantage he thought. Listening about the muggle 'magic' called technology he nodded. He knew more about that hen most having been taught by his uncle a little on his set up down in France. "Oh yes, I know. My uncle uses it in a system with wizarding owls too. It's pretty cool." Not that he believed him when he said he might inherit it one day; he did believe his uncle would be alive for several more centuries if he could manage it! Although it did sound quite promising if he did; that would be a nice income he was willing to bet. Hearing she assumed he would be brilliant at anything made him feel a bit of pride deep inside and he smiled coolly back, nodding his head just slightly. It paid off in the long run to drop back into being aloof sometimes. "Thanks, I'll have to do some reading up on some." Secretly the way his uncle spoke about flavors, he wondered if it didn't make sense to find someone who could explain that part before he read. Surely that would make the rest make more sense? This next comment got a sort of rueful smile. "I, uh, don't usually come to gatherings or hang out in the common room much. Plus we're in different years so we don't have any classes together. I guess the only other place I would have run into you is at meals. So I guess we've just been unlucky so far in meet-ups, though I did recognize your face."@jiale

Rollo had a good point about gardening. It was often the origin of a meal. He as quite clever. Even Jia Le hadn't thought into that.
"Well said," she said with a smile. "And yes it's nice to eat foods grown in our own home. They're always fresh. My mum and dad often owl me carrot and celery sticks to munch on as snacks. I can't get enough of them." Jia Le gave a slight laugh. While others loved candy as a treat, Jia Le loved raw veggies.
Jia Le's eyes widened when Rollo said his own uncle used this communication invention she spoke of.
"Really?" she said. "That's very interesting. I'll wager he can get a number of things done in a small amount of time. Sometimes I wonder why more Muggle technology isn't introduced to our world. Imagine it combined with our magic... the possibilities!" Jia Le was really getting into the convo.
Jia Le then nodded as Rollo said he would read up on some, and then as he spoke of not coming to the Common Room as much.
"Well I am certainly glad you and I will be here together for a few more years," she said. "I would like to converse with you more, find out what subjects you have a great deal of knowledge on."
That was one of the best things about being in Ravenclaw for her, finding out about what others knew a lot about. She often found herself studying those things afterward.

Jia Le (though he still wasn't sold on which culture she was from) was an interesting girl. Although younger, she did seem pretty into collecting knowledge and using it. He was used to girls being more romance and gossipy he assumed from his classes. His best friend (and he had to remind himself girlfriend since they were so newly dating) was more investigative and sneaky minded which he found himself attracted to as well. It fit the darker side of his personality really, though few knew about the darker morality he tended to think about. "They owlpost you veggies? They must really be into gardening then!" He'd never heard of something like that! And she apparently loved that. "Do you help them with the gardening as well when you are home?" She seemed surprised when he mentioned that his uncle used it. "I guess you could say he's sort of inventive. He has a lot of connections around the world so he's into trade. I suspect he got a lot of his interest in it because of that." True enough as far as he knew. "I can see it. He runs a wizarding message system, but uses muggle tech to get it to other stations faster. It's a lot easier on the owls I would think." How much could he really say? It was brilliant what he did, but it certainly was for a more nefarious purpose then message delivering. Rollo didn't even object because technically the system wasn't bad, it was just being used for a darker purpose by most of the clients. No, he probably shouldn't talk about it very much. He nodded at her next words however. "I see a very good advantage in that for certain. And no rush on the list, I still have a few books I'm in the middle of right now outside of class. It would probably be a week before I could start reading into the cooking stuff."@jiale

Jia Le chuckled about Rollo's reaction to her family owling her veggies.
"Oh they place them in a magic container that keeps them fresh," she said. "And I do enjoy helping with the gardening when I can. I'm quite good at it, but at the same time my mum and dad known I have additional interests and try to give me my space... which isn't easy given the size of my family."
His uncle sounded more and more interesting by the moment. She didn't know Rollo well of course, but certainly didn't know there was a boy in her House with such a family connection.
"Do you think you might do something along the same lines one day?" she asked.
Jia Le was happy to be around someone who liked reading as much as she did.
"What are you reading at the moment?" she asked. "Just curious if I've read it as well."

Ah, a magic container made sense indeed! Although getting snacks from the elves wasn't too shabby either, but he doubted they often sent veggies to students so it was just as well she had access. "Oh you have a lot of family? That's nice, it's just my mom and me.My uncle dropped in a week ago to check I was doing okay, but we've uh, always been kind of a scattered family." Seriously scattered across the centuries apparently. He'd never met his uncle's get, but he'd been told about them and where they all were generally. Ah, that was a tricky question. "Uh, not unless he passes away which I really don't see happening." Like, not during his lifetime probably. "His is too specialty I think. I don't know what I want to do yet. I'm not even sure what my field of interest is really." He'd like to be different though, something unique, not just following in another's footsteps. And that kind of thing would be hard to pull off. If he thought the other question had been tricky, the last one was a humdinger. However, Rollo was honest enough not to see the point of trying to conceal it. "Um, well I just finished 'Lost Souls' and I'm a chapter into 'Travels into Dalamtia' but they are both restricted section books the Professor is letting me have access to. I, um, have some relatives in both of them I think." They were definitely not classroom type reading, but he could understand very much why they were here. And from some things he had learned from his uncle he suspected the first had been written by someone either who was a vampire or had traveled with one a lot on a first name basis. There were some details that were a little too true... @jiale

Jia Le couldn't imagine only living with one other person. She was afraid to tell Rollo just how many siblings she had. She didn't want him to feel bad that he didn't have that type of family. Well maybe he wouldn't, but she didn't want to risk it.
"Yeah... big family," was all she said. "Your mum must be proud of you. You seem really bright and well-spoken."
Jia Le took a great interest in Rollo's uncertainty over what to do. She loved helping people find their interests in life.
"Hmm, maybe we can look over potential careers some time," she said. "You know, just for fun. I've been wanting to do the same myself anyway."
Jia Le had heard of both the books Rollo mentioned and her eyes widened over how he was able to read them and... relatives?
"Wow, that's incredible!" she said. "I have heard of those books, and had not idea there was a relative of those in it going to Hogwarts! I thought they were purely fictional!"
