Avery Alexandra King Twenty-three Pureblood Ravenclaw Alumni / Healer - Spell Damage 10" Cherry wand with a Dragon heartstring core BIRTHDAY: Twenty-three - July 7 PATRONUS: White Hawk ABILITIES: Animagus- White Hawk, Occlumency Appearance: Avery's hair is dark brown/brunette, typically medium to long in length. She usually wears it curly, but will occasionally straighten it. When at home, around her parents, or around those she knows are associated with her parents, she keeps her hair very nice and well-kept. However, when she is alone, at school, or just with friends, she tends to wear it in more of an intentional, slightly messy style. Her eyes are Hazel, generally appearing more green than brown. They often carry the weight of her emotions, though she has learned to hide this, unless she lets her guard down for whatever reason. Avery has an oval shaped face. She has light skin with a fair complexion. She has no tattoos, scars, or exciting piercings to speak of, considering her parents would kill her if she did and they found out. She does, however, always wear a small, oval-shaped locket that contains a picture of her mother. She has a small, slender, petite, yet curvy build. She stands about 5'7" and weighs about 125 lbs. She runs and stays in shape, but does not have a very muscly, athletic build. She has a very trendy, sometimes more formal style. She typically wears the trendy, in-style clothes, but she tends to take them and make her own style out of it. When doing anything with her family she tends to wear more formal clothes, though still making them her own. She rarely wears anything simple, except when she is running, in which case she tends to wear typical, relaxed clothing, though it may sometimes tend to be brighter colors. Like her patronus, Avery's animagus form is a white hawk. The locket that holds a picture of her mother has become the mark by which she may be identified. It shows as a trail of tiny grey specks along the white feathers of her neck, all leading down to a larger grey oval near the center of the front of her upper chest/lower neck. Personality: Avery is a somewhat complex person. During her time at Hogwarts she often came off as cold, shy, stuck-up, and even a snob. However, none of these things are true of her. She is a very kind, caring, and sweet girl, but because of her family, she had a hard time showing these traits, among others, for fear that they will find out and reject her, which was one of her biggest fears. Instead, she hid her emotions, sometimes she put on a smile, but more often than not, the smile couldn't hide it, or she just couldn't force herself to smile and pretend everything is alright when nothing was alright while she pretended to be someone she was not. Because of this, she sometimes came off as cold or snobby because people didn't know why she didn't show anything, they didn't know her pain or her fears, they only knew what they thought they saw, and they knew her family's history. So, she was judged and put into the same category as the rest of her family when she was actually polar opposite of most of them. Those who got to know her, however, got to see the sweet, caring girl she is. She is very loyal and protective of her friends. While she was once afraid to stand up to her family and those who may have been connections to them, she isn't afraid to stand up to anyone else. She will stand up for herself and look out for herself and her friends when it is necessary. She is a very strong, independent, stubborn girl. When she sets her mind to something, she goes after it and puts all of her effort into it. She almost never leaves something unfinished, and anything she does, she puts her heart into it. This typically leads to her accomplishing just about anything she puts her mind to. She is and has always been a very bright, inquisitive girl, some might even call her brilliant or genius. She very much values intelligence, wisdom, and knowledge, and thus seeks to attain each of these above most anything else. She worked hard to make sure her grades stayed as close to perfect as possible while attending Hogwarts, and does not like to lose, especially in things regarding knowledge or intelligence. She also likes to learn new things beyond what is taught in the classroom, and thus spends a lot of her free time learning new advanced techniques. The other side of Avery that once almost no one saw is the sensitive side. The side of her that was afraid. Afraid of doing something "wrong" and being rejected by her family, no matter how much she disliked most of them. Afraid to do the things she wanted and be herself when anyone was around who could possibly tell her family. Afraid to love for fear of losing them, whether to illness or because her family disproved. She was afraid to let herself love someone for fear that her family would not approve and she would be forced to choose, leave the man she loves and break her own heart, or be disowned by her family. Thus, she was afraid that she would die alone, or miserable, never able to do what she wants and be herself. She has moved past this to some degree, allowing herself to be a little more open with certain people who have gained her trust. She is not, however, quick to trust, nor does she easily let others in, even now. She spent her entire life building up walls around herself, her heart, so that no one could get in, no one could see her fears or weaknesses, only what she wanted them to. She practically perfected the mask she hid behind, allowing no one in, allowing others to see only what she wanted them to see. This is not something that could easily be broken down and moved past. Too much has happened in her life for it all to just suddenly be okay. She still has about the best darn poker face you'll find, and she can be quite stoic, even now, when she wants to be, but it is not so ever-present as it once was. Despite all the complexities, Avery is fundamentally a very loyal, dependable, hard-working, fun-loving, sweet, kind, caring girl who just wants to be loved, to find her place, and to be herself. She is quick-witted and funny when she wants to be and loves a good bout of playful banter, especially coming from someone who is, like herself, quick on their feet, and quick to throw back witty remarks. She still does not have a ton of friends, but those she has are close friends, those she knows she can trust with her life. She is very trust-worthy and honest, and thus expects the same from those she is close to. Her trust, once lost, is very difficult to win back, given that she does not easily give her trust to begin with. Likes: There are a lot of things that Avery likes. Learning. Avery loves to learn new things, to gain knowledge. She values knowledge and wisdom above almost everything else, but knowledge for the sake of knowledge, not for power. She likes running, writing, reading, singing, hanging out with friends, animals, cookies, tea, people who are open minded, doing her own thing, cute guys, and sweet, kind, caring people. Bright colors, most anything sweet, though she has a weakness for ice cream, especially chocolate and mint chocolate chip. She also loves to play the piano, especially to relax or express her emotions in private. Dislikes: Being told what to do, who to be, how to dress, how to act, how to live her life. Ignorance, arrogance, those who think themselves above or better than everyone else, people who intentionally hurt others for whatever reason, people who hurt animals, men who are violent in any way towards women, jerks and bullies in general. Liars, cheaters, self centered, selfish people, Strengths: Independent, strong, intelligent, quick-witted, kind, caring, loving, unique, dependable, loyal, persistent, follows through with things she starts, she can do just about anything she sets her mind to. She is brilliant, clever, cunning, and intuitive. Because of her family history, she does have a tendency to look out for herself, but despite her family she also looks out for her friends. Weaknesses: Hard-headed. She has a hard time standing up to her family when it comes to doing what she wants versus what they want. She may be seen as stuck-up or snobby because she tries to hide her emotions, which may lead to her being seen as cold or distant, which can be taken as her being stuck-up because that is what is expected of her from those who know of her family. Has a hard time showing people who she really is for fear that her parents will find out and reject her. She is also somewhat afraid to let herself fall for someone because she is afraid it may be, or rather will likely be, someone her parents do not approve of and she will be forced to leave him and break her own heart or leave her family, again, with a broken heart. She can be very stoic and hard to read, which is both good and bad at times. She is still somewhat hesitant to trust for fear of being hurt or betrayed. She can also be overly analytical, leading to a lack of spontaneity at times. Desires: One of Avery's greatest desire has always been to be able to be herself without fear of being rejected by those she cares about. If that is not possible, she wants to be strong enough to overcome her fear of being rejected by her family and be herself, to let people see her for who she is instead of a snob from a family who snobs. Her greatest desire was to find love, to find someone she could be herself with without any fear, someone she could love and who will love her no matter what, which is something that she believes that she has somehow managed to achieve. Now, her greatest desire is to be with that person, Jasper, for the rest of her life--to be happy, to make him happy, to be safe, and to keep him safe. Fears: Her biggest fear is losing the one she loves. She is also afraid of rejection, although to a lesser degree now than in the past. Also, she is afraid of always being stuck pretending to be someone she isn't, and dying alone. Oddly enough, she is a little afraid of the dark, mostly because darkness reminds her of evil and makes her think of evil people lurking in the shadows, but it is more of a dislike or a mild discomfort towards the idea than a fear of the thing itself. She has a strong dislike for and subsequent fear of snakes. Patronus: Avery's patronus is a White Hawk. Boggart: Her boggart takes the form of a snake, which represents more of a figurative idea than a literal snake. It is a representation of her family, who, aside from herself and her mother, were all Slytherin, and very much snake-like. Subsequently, she quite dislikes and shies away from snakes in any form. History: Avery has had a complex history. She was born on the 2nd of July to Rosalie and Joseph King, almost four years following the birth of her older brother, Xander, and eight years after her sister Ashlynn. She was a beautiful baby girl, born with sparkling blue eyes and a full head of black hair. The family adored her and had high expectations for her, given that even at such a young age she displayed an intense curiosity, brilliance, and an aptitude for learning. Avery grew into a beautiful, happy child, nurtured and adored by her mother. At the age of 5 she showed the first signs of magic. It was early fall and the flowers had begun to wither. Avery was playing with her mother when she noticed that the flowers were withering. She didn't understand why they had to die, and so, to her mother's surprise and delight, Avery caused the flowers to bloom again. Although this made her mother happy, the others in her family weren't exactly sure what to think of it. Her first signs of magic were used to help and heal, which wasn't exactly the family business. As she grew, Avery became more and more a sweet, happy , caring girl. She loved to read books, to play, to help people. She began to show more and more interest in helping people, more and more caring for others, feeling bad for those that hurt, and this did not please her family, save her mother. She was carefree, gentle and kind, three things that were not so common in their house. Her grandmother gave her lessons in how to be proper, polite, and behave like a lady as she grew, all the while trying to instill in her the traits and beliefs that were the foundation for their family. Pride, superiority, disregard for the weak, and most of all, disgust towards all those of less than pureblood descent, especially Mudbloods. However, despite all the "training" she provided, Avery continued to grow her own way, seemingly disregarding all the teaching her grandmother provided. At the age of 11, Avery received her letter from Hogwarts. She was sorted into Ravenclaw, to the great displeasure of her family. At this time, Avery didn't quite understand just how much it meant to her family to be put into Slytherin, or how none of the Kings had been sorted into any other house for as long as anyone could remember. They were, however, at least pleased that she hadn't been placed into Hufflepuff, or worse, Gryffindor. She was pleased with her placement. She fit in very will in Ravenclaw and made a lot of new friends her first year. She also began to bond with her cousin Gabriel, who had also been sorted into Ravenclaw, despite the family's expectations. All throughout school, Avery has excelled in all of her classes. She was very bright and loved to learn. She played started playing Quidditch as the Ravenclaw Seeker during her second year, and continued through her sixth year. She was devastated following the death of her mother during the Christmas break of her fourth year, but Quidditch provided another distraction for her. She did not try out her seventh year due to her desire to focus purely on her studies, whether or not such extra time was necessary It was during this time, after the start of her first year and thereafter that Avery slowly began to learn what her family expected. To learn why they loved her brother and were wary of her, despite how sweet and loving she was to each of them. She began to learn what was expected, what she should do, what she shouldn't do, how she should act, what people she was supposed to avoid, what was acceptable, and what was not. She hated it. She hated that her entire life, from her personality to her clothes to her friends, it was all mapped out for her. There wasn't anything in her life that they didn't have some expectation for or opinion on. She was their slave, whether she wanted to be or not. And she certainly did not want to be. When she was 14, her mother fell ill. She came down with a mysterious illness, one that the healers could not explain, nor could they find a cause. By the time answers were found and they determined the cause, a poison, it was too late. The damage had been done. Her mother's organs had all but failed. She was in constant pain, and she was slowly bleeding to death. For weeks all that filled the house was the screams of her slowly dying mother. It broke her heart. Avery cried herself to sleep every night, wishing she could somehow save her, but knowing she could not. That final morning, just a few days before the end of her Christmas break, Avery awoke to deadly, painful silence. The silence was more painful than the pained screams had ever been, for she knew her mother was gone. She dreaded the reality of it, but she entered her mother's room to find her dead, cold, lifeless, laying in a puddle of her own blood. They had all expected it, but it didn't make it any easier. She had lost the one person who understood her. The one person who loved her unconditionally. She was gone. It was not long after the death of her mother that Avery met Jasper. Despite her attempts at pushing everyone away, he managed to stick around. She never understood why he put up with her and more than once she The two became quite close over the years and she grew to adore him. He even managed to get past her walls, even when no one else could. She gave him hope, someone to care about, and he always let her know that she wasn't alone, as was sometimes her fear. He was the one person she let in, that she trusted, even when she pushed the rest of the world away. She couldn't truly give you one reason why, because the reasons are too numerous and too intertwined to pick out just one. It was just him. Many times she practically convinced herself that she didn't deserve him, yet it didn't matter in the end, because he always stuck around and made her forget those doubts that crept into her mind. Growing up in a very... complicated family, Avery developed a drive to succeed, to be the best, at an early age. And although her family was unable to teach her to be a ruthless, proud witch who looked out only for herself, they did teach her a few things. Being the proud, driven family that they were, they had stepped on many toes and made many enemies. They were intent on being on top, and that meant not exposing themselves and not being weak. This included Avery. Whether or not she accepted all of the beliefs, she was a part of the family. She could not be a weak link, she could not be used to expose anything. This meant that she must learn to shut her mind off, to keep others from entering. So, her father and her grandmother began to teach her how to use occlumency. Being the bright, strong witch that she was, she was able to pick up on it without too much trouble. In addition to her continued Occlumency training, Avery began trying to learn the art of animagus transformation during her fifth year, wanting to acquire as many potentially useful skills as possible. She caught on rather quickly to the transformation and it became quite a useful skill for her. During the years that followed, Avery found herself unable to defy her family's rule and expectations, no matter how hard she tried. Her mother had accepted her as she was, but she was alone now. She wanted to be loved, to be accepted, so she did as she was told, she became a person she didn't want to be, at least in their eyes. She immersed herself in her studies, doing everything she could to avoid thinking about or facing what she knew she would one day have to face. She tried to avoid thinking about her mother, all it brought was pain and horrific memories. She, for the most part, avoiding socializing. It was too hard to put on a mask, to act like she was someone she wasn't, to hide everything behind a smile. So, the easiest way to deal with it was to avoid it. She still put on a smile, most of the time, told the world it was okay, but there were days when she couldn't smile, days when she had no expression, really, and on those days people made assumptions. It's easy to make assumptions when you know so little yet think you know so much. It is even easier when the person doesn't do anything to try to change your mind, and Avery did not. She didn't care anymore. She spent all her time trying to make her family think she was someone she wasn't, to prove to them that she was worthy to bear their name, she was sick of trying to prove who she was or was not, so she let people think what they wanted to. After graduating from Hogwarts, things with her family slowly came to a head. Her father began threatening those she cared about in order to manipulate her into doing what he wanted and becoming what he wanted. This, however, backfired in the end. While it worked for a short time, it only made her resent him more, search more avidly for a way out, and fight against him more strongly. In the end, she found a way out. A confrontation ensued between the members of their family and before it was over, the only two that survived were Avery and Xander, but not before some serious damage was done. Avery had turned against them in secret and they eventually found out and tortured her for days before she finally got away. This caused quite a bit of psychological trauma, not to mention aggravating her already serious trust issues. She has moved past much of what happened, but some things can be fixed over night. Some things take years to move past, but she is getting there, especially with the help of Jasper. After everything that happened, Avery went on to study to become a healer and now works at St. Mungo's in the department specializing in treating damage caused by spells. Her brother, no longer having to be the good son, went on to find his own dreams, which was a bit difficult at first, but he managed. They are still not necessarily close, but at least they get along well enough, since he did help her in the end. Things are moving up and that is all she could ask for.
