The Hallowe'en Masquerade Ball was tonight and after a day full of reading over work by his students and teaching he was ready for it. He'd left to Diagon Alley last weekend to go get nice dress robes and a mask for the ball. He decided on some nice black dress robes and a masquerade mask for the ball. The mask was made of iron and had intricate designs. It was a good investment in his money, at least in his opinion. He was going to look as nice as he could. He had asked Riley O'Hara, the herbology professor, to the ball. He was actually quite excited to spend his time with her.
He got himself ready and put on some nice black shoes to match the black dress robes that he was wearing and he slipped on his mask. He took a comb and some gel and fixed his hair to look absolutely perfect. He hadn't been on a date in a long time. Well since he started working at Hogwarts, it was hard on the relationship. He always liked to look his best. He looked around his office before finishing up.
He walked down to the Great Hall and waited to see Riley. She was nice and he honestly was excited. She was just a year younger than him and he remembered her from school. She was a Gryffindor and he was a Ravenclaw, separate years, he was kind of shy when he was at Hogwarts. She had always been stunningly beautiful though. He was glad that he asked her even if he really didn't know her that well.
He stood at the entrance and eyed around looking for her. He saw several of the students heading inside. There was no doubt that even the professors with dates would still be keeping their eyes on the ball. Hopefully nothing major would happen and he could keep his attention on Riley. It was never worse to just leave your date even if you were just doing part of your job.

| It was easy to say going to a Hogwarts ball again was odd. As a student, Riley O'Hara hadn't been a frequent ball-goer. She would much rather be exploring the forest, or swimming in the black lake. There wasn't really much appeal in formal dresses and black ties to the former Gryffindor. But, on rare occasions such as that night, Riley could be convinced to attend school functions. Of course, she would feel some duty to make sure the students behaved but she would try her best to just have a good night.
The man she was going with was an incredibly kind, generous person. A true gentleman from what Riley had gathered in the time they spent together. It was a surprise that he asked Riley, but then again even professors were allowed to have dates to these sorts of things, right? Damien Kelith was the Muggle Studies professor, a subject that Riley had always liked. Being a halfblood, she knew about both muggle and magical. Growing up though, she hadn't used much magic. She had been too busy working to provide for her family. Being dedicated to something or someone was what Riley was good at, it was what she wanted to do.
Teaching came close to that. One could say Riley was more like a sister or friend to her students than she was an authority figure. She hated when people disobeyed her, true, but she understood that sometimes kids need to be kids. She was in Gryffindor and was now the Head of House, so she knew that adventures were always lurking in the shadows begging to be had. She was the teacher that they could all go to for help, she was the one that guaranteed personal attention if they wanted it. Riley would always care for her students and their success, more than she had bothered with her own as a student.
Riley avoided the mirror as she walked out of her room and towards the great hall. As she neared she heard the loud voices of eager students and the instructive commands of supervisors echoing off the vaulted ceilings. Walking down the stairs, Riley began to scan the room for her date, a sudden feeling of anxiety taking over her stomach. What if this night just didn't go well, what if something or someone ruined it? Most students hardly noticed when professors had dates but others seemed to find it obnoxious that professors wanted to have fun at school sanctioned events. What, were teachers not allowed to enjoy themselves?
Riley's blue eyes locked on the tall man waiting for her and took a deep breath before approaching him. "You look wonderful, Damien!" she exclaimed a little to enthusiastically, biting her lip as she did so. Way to play it cool, you're a natural! |

Damien kept his eyes on the students flowing in. He had no intentions on supervising this ball without someone to go with. He hadn't honestly dated at all since he left Hogwarts. How could you? Even when he was working at the Three Broomsticks, it wasn't like he got out all the time. Hogwarts was a good time for him when he was a student and now it was a good time that he was back and teaching.
His eyes came across a woman who had her hair braided beautifully around her head. The green dress made him smile, it donned her figure well. He liked the herbology professor. She was good hearted and absolutely beautiful. The silver mask donned her face but it was her words that gave her away. Her voice, ”you look wonderful, Damien!” He'd heard the excitement in her voice and he knew he was probably just as excited. He grinned, ”you look beautiful Miss O'Hara.”
The first time in a long time that he was able to enjoy some time with a beautiful woman. He wondered what the students would do, there were those who honestly could care less and those who could be quite annoying. Hopefully the latter wouldn't happen. He was here to enjoy his time with Riley even if they were going to supervise the dance. So far everything was going well, the students were meeting and going into the Great Hall and there were giggling girls and rowdy boys. Kids will be kids and he wasn't going to interfere with just regular rowdiness.
A smile came to his face, ”well shall we enjoy a stress-free night tonight with a stunning guy like me?” he asked her. He could occasionally be a person who was full of himself, usually it was just jokingly but sometimes he meant it. He knew he was a great guy, he just never had tried to be the guy who chased after every girl that passed under his nose. He waited for special girls, and Riley happened to be that one special girl in a long time. He held out his hand for her to take so they could go into the ball together.
