It was just the right shape, the perfect smoothness, and right inside the limit of being not-too-heavy. The stone was so ideal it practically felt wrong trying to skip it, because once it had gone there was no telling how long it would be till another like it came along. He could sort of say the same thing about his family. Not that he was throwing them away, and while they'd see each other over the summer, even when he had to leave them to come back here for another term it would only be for a set number of more years. But there was still so little time left... hours really, where there would be more than one Goyle at Hogwarts. It had been hard enough for Toby a year earlier, when he had to come to terms with the idea that when they left on the train, River wouldn't be coming back with them. Some people would find his situation liberating, a chance to establish independence. Toby wished he was one of that kind of people. He knew he could be, but it was going to take some time. He ran his thumb over the face of the skipping stone; it was still slightly warm from bathing in the open sunlight on the lakeshore, though the warmth was quickly fading. Toby didn't want to let it go. Somewhere there was a song in this, but he couldn't wrap his head around it right now. Maybe later. Later. After all, all he was going to have on his hands was time.
