(This thread takes place between the Rome trip and the Greece trip)

Katrina knew when she returned home from Rome, things would go back to being pretty dreary again. She would be back home with her mother and life was always dreary with Andromeda Bayne. She loved her mother a great deal, but she was so tired of the woman not moving on with her life after Malevelas Bayne left her while she was pregnant. That was seventeen years ago! Katrina was depressed for a period of time too, but she found people who helped her get over that. She tried to encourage her mother to go out and socialize and maybe find a nice man to start a relationship with, but her mother chose to stay locked up in their old house outside London. Kay didn't no what else to do.

So to say it was nice to get out of the house was an understatement, even if it was just to get some raven food for Empusa at the Menagerie. The Menagerie had food for just about any bird imaginable, both magical and non-magical. Kat got enough of the food to last her bird a few weeks, then smirked as she passed some of the birds for sale. Having an affinity for birds, they all turned their heads to her.

"You guys are bored too, huh?" she sighed as she pet one as best as she could through the cage. "I hear ya."

Ali wasn’t sure why she agreed to meet Kat in the magical menagerie; she already had a pet, an owl. A beautiful, white snowy owl with a black diamond shape in his fur in his forehead. Her parents had gotten her baby when she first started Hogwarts and the owl had been with her ever since. She hadn’t expected to ever have another pet. Baby was all that she needed... But the dragon egg that she had found was a welcome addition. But she came away, and she walked into the shop on that decent July day, still fairly exhausted from her trip to Italy. Not much had happened on the trip. She had spent time with her friends and she had spent time with Chaunce, who, for all intensive purposes, was her friend. Ali was itching to get back to the castle. Well, mostly back to the forest. She had left her dragon egg there during her Italy trip and was eager to get it home to a safe place where she could keep an eye on it while she was on holiday. After this visit today, she’d go to Hogsmead and then walk to the grounds. “Hi love.” She said as she entered the store and saw her friend. “Talking to birds, are you?” she asked with a smirk.

Well, the day suddenly got a little better. Kat didn't think she'd see one of her best friends, Ali, so soon after the trip. They had so much fun on it as roomies and Kat missed the heck out of it all already. But by happy coincidence Ali happened to be in Diagon and at the Menagerie at the same time. Kat turned and gave Ali a small smile.

"Hey you," she said. Most people would hug one of their best friends when they saw them, but Kat had never been the hugging type. About the only two people she hugged and kissed were her mother and her boyfriend. But she knew Ali was cool with that. "Meh, the birds are drawn to me so I feel a bit guilty if I don't saw hello. Crazy affinity thing, you know? Also getting some food for my own bird." She leaned against a display counter and looked at her friend. "So what have you been up to since you've been back? I'm kinda missing Rome already... any my roomie there a little too." Kat gave a smirk at that. "Didn't know if I'd see you again until the new year began."

Ali continued to forget that her friend had the affinity with animals. It wasn’t something that Ali knew very much about it so it wasn’t something that stuck in her head for very long. Not that Ali wasn’t interested in it; she just never really felt that she would need to know everything about it. She couldn’t imagine having the ability to understand animals. Even if you couldn’t talk to them directly. Ali liked animals, though, she liked magical creatures a lot more than she liked common, muggle animals. Magical creatures were so much more interesting and a lot more fun to work with and learn about. She craved the Dragon egg to be back in the soft nook under her arms like it had been the first day she found it and had ran it up to show Chaunce. “I should get some new treats for Baby.” Ali agreed when her friend brought up getting food for her bird. “She’s picky.” She sighed. Ali had known what spoiling her Owl would do to her, now, she only ate deluxe, rich treats. Ali hoped the dragon wouldn’t be so picky. “I know, we’ll be seventh years soon.” She smirked.

Katrina nodded as Ali spoke about getting food for her owl. Kat liked Baby a lot and vice versa. That was probably mostly due to the Affinity, but who was Kat to complain. It was nice to visit with the owl whenever she hung out with Ali at the school.

"Meh, most birds are picky I think," she said. "Empusa's on a special diet as well. Keeps them healthy, you know?"

Kat then smiled a little as Ali spoke of them being Seventh Years.

"Yeah, and you know what that means," she said. "We have to be the responsible ones and role models and all that now." She then jokingly placed a hand on Ali's shoulder. "I know... I'm scared too."

She then decided to ask the typical question that all Seventh Years heard a gazillion times.

"So... we do the Hogwarts thing for one more year and then we graduate," she said. "So... what's your grand plan when you get out? Guessing I'm going to do the cliche thing and try to make some money off my painting skills. I'll probably take a shop job until that gets off the ground. Might work here. I'd be around birds after all."

Of course if she ended up marrying Cole, money wouldn't be an issue. Still, Katrina was a one-time loner and knew the importance of pulling her own weight.
