Evie laughed at the suggestion that she was around to jab Pandora when needed. "Yeah, right, I'll just tail you around to make sure you're noticing everything, and if you don't I'll poke you, okay?" she replied teasingly. She didn't think too much of the wink, but it did make her blush a little. Only very slightly though.
When the other girl clarified that she was more talking about the past, Evie nodded. She supposed she had misunderstood, then. She blushed again at Pandora's teasing but nodded. Of course that was what she wanted. "It sounds like the best thing to me, to be able to be in a relationship like that. I mean, sure, survival and protection is one thing, but it's also companionship that is important," she replied.
The words 'breeding project' made Evie crinkle up her nose. That put such a cold spin on a relationship when it was described like that. It was one of the reasons she disliked the idea of arranged marriages, as it lost a lot of the warmth and excitement that weddings should have. "I guess you can be grateful that he doesn't seem cruel or abusive, but I still think you have a right to more from a marriage than someone who won't beat you up. I don't think parents or guardians should have a right to force their children into marriages... it's manipulative and unfair," she replied stubbornly.
She was glad to hear that Pandora would rather have love, but it seemed like she was resigned to what was going to happen, when Evie felt she would have been fighting against it more. "I'm glad you will try and keep your kids from falling into the same kind of system. But there's still hope for you too, you know? If you fight hard enough against it, maybe he will give you the freedom to choose your own partner?" she suggested. As much as she may not have felt like she had boys following her around, Evie was sure it wouldn't take long if she gave it the opportunity.

They both laughed. "Oh yes, that would be perfect. You can go with me everywhere through all the modeling shows and stuff and be my personal assistant." She grinned at the idea of a sixteen year old with one,but still. The history part certainly was an important factor in marriage thinking these days, at least on Pandora's side. "I think then and now it's the same. Most people after a few years find themselves in close relationships. I've heard some say they don't understand how you can wait to fall in love first when those you get matched up with become love." She shrugged not knowing from experience yet, but certainly seeing both sides.
"To be honest I don't know myself yet, but it seems both sides have people arguing theirs is the best. But it's not like you can try both and see. Hard to know where the advantage really lies in the long run." before her friend could open her mouth she raised a finger and added "And there are of course a tons of divorces amongst people who married for love, so that casts some doubt." She was playing devil's advocate, but it suited her at the moment so she let it flow.
Shrugging, she shook her head. "I don't think it's quite that cut and dried. And who knows, it may fall through anyway. But I do get more, arguably, it's just not the romance you seem to be desiring, isn't it?" She leaned over and touched her friend's shoulder with a smile, simply friendly. "So tell me who is the guy you think about, huh Evie? Where's your heart headed?" But how could Pandora tell her that love was not what she sought, but a wizarding blood line? A moment's thinking brought it around.
"Evie, you know I love you darling and I admire the way you want me to fight, but I don't think you see all the advantages here either, nor my own promises to my grandfather, my last living relative." Ha. "The pures need a lot of help and they have some bad blood mixed in there. Our line is still mostly fresh and from outside the United Kingdom. That's more then just valuable, they want it bad enough to pay a lot. And by a lot I do mean a lot. Enough to keep my grandfather in good shape long enough to get to play with his great grandkids."

Evie supposed that it could be possible for people to fall in love after being married, but she st ill felt like it should be the starting point rather than a convenient development later on. "Yeah, I know there are divorces from couples who married for love. I'm not saying those are perfect, I was just saying that I think that love is something that should be a foundation for marriage rather than like, family advantages or conveniences," she replied.
When she asked where Evie's heard was headed, she laughed a little, blushing slightly when Pandora mentioned boys. Evie didn't know if she was comfortable admitting her attraction to girls here, especially seeing as her and Pandora didn't see eye to eye on a lot of things. "Well, I don't really know. I guess there isn't anyone in particular I have my eye on..." One who she did was a girl, so bringing that up may well not happen, at least not without some more prompting.
When Pandora said that the 'pures' needed a lot of help, and that there was bad blood mixed in there, Evie frowned. "Wait, you mean Muggle blood?" Was Pandora that pureblood focused as well? As much as Evie was a halfblood herself, with a pureblood father and a halfblood mother - and she didn't buy in to the blood purity idea at all, even though her family did (even her mother wished she was a pureblood and believed in blood purity). The idea of matching people up to protect their blood purity made Evie feel sick.

Amused, Pandora thought that was understating things a lot. When more then fifty percent of marriages ended in the first five years, there was clearly something wrong. But she didn't want to get into it either and reveal what her main goals really were. For love would be a nice surprise, but it was the marriage that she was after mostly. That would be success indeed! Jared was simply taking advantage of the fact she didn't care about resistance and was more interested in having some freedom inside the marriage which he didn't seem to have a problem with.
"Maybe different things work for different folks. In any case, we'll see if it actually goes any where." She enjoyed teasing her about romance, but looked very surprised she had no one in mind! "No one at all? Really?" She gave her a look which said she thought that was very interesting indeed! "Huh, most people have at least someone they fancy. Since you were so much talking up love and romance I figured there must be someone on your mind!"
She shook her head adding "Well let me know when you do, I'd love to see where it goes." At her friend's startled comment she shook her head with a laugh. "No no, genetics. See, the purebloods in England have been, well, insulated. Interbreeding so much the same families are getting sort of layered. My family is from India so whole new bloodline, only one generation in so far because they always married others from India. So any children of mine are fresh mix." She shrugged. "If anyone ha smarts about it, they see me as a chance to make sure their kids have much better odds, you see? That's why Jared's father is paying a lot for the chance."

Evie agreed that different things worked for different people, of course. Just because Evie believed one thing, it didn't mean everyone had to. Her blush continued as Pandora kept interrogating her about her romantic interests. "No... not really," she replied, lying again. "Just because I have those kind of ideals, it doesn't mean I have to be all over some boy..." she commented, trying to divert attention from the topic.
She let out a sigh of relief when Pandora mentioned it was about genetics rather than blood purity. The idea was still strange to her, though. What did it really matter? "But there are so many different families, why do people treat bloodline as so important? What makes a person important should be their actions and their merits rather than their heritage," she said, giving her opinion again. "I don't really see how some kids have better odds than others due to arranged bloodlines."

Evie seemed reluctant to talk. It was unusual as most girls liked to hint and discuss and imagine out loud, not so much as gossip. Debating over all the emotions and feelings and wonder about relationships helped most out loud, though not Pandora as she had too many things she could not speak about. And she had not seemed so hesitant in the past, but maybe in time she might if Pandora didn't push her which she hadn't planned to in the first place. Holding her hands up like a surrender, Pandora spoke with laughter "Ok ok, I can see this is not a subject to mess with! I give!"
Shaking her head she leaned back against the tree again. "Evie, you know I don't think conventional much; I've never thought the pureblood politics made a lot of sense. I mean, if you are going to claim it at least marry outside of the United Kingdom, just for your kid's genetics if nothing else, but they always seem to stick to English families and these infamous twenty-six ones at that. Talk about asking for big noses and flappy ears in the future, you know?" She smirked slightly at that part, amused.
"Don't get me wrong, it also makes sense to try and stay pure if you are concerned about all your kids being magical. Magic lines plus magic lines equals much better odds then with a muggleborn or a muggle. But it's like that old group of Death Eaters in the past; they get way too fanatical about it and that's sort of scary." She shook her head again at the old foolishness and was glad the DE had been regulated to the far past at least. "If you want to be technical about it, I'm more then seventy percent Indian pure which is why Jared's father was so eager to pay a lot."

Evie laughed a little as Pandora gave in about finding out more. She was relieved as she didn't want to give away anything about liking girls. "I don't know, all of that is just really intense. It's not something I think I would want to think about if I was going to have a family... I'd just want it to happen with the right person and we would accept the kids however they are." Pureblood, halfblood, English, Indian, whatever, it didn't matter to her. "I mean, I can understand the reasoning behind it, I guess, but I just don't really think that goes up on my priority list at all. But I guess it's different for different people, which is okay," she admitted. The idea of Jared's father paying to arrange this marriage also just felt weird. The whole concept felt weird to her. "But hey, if it's something you're cool with, then all the best to you. It does seem like Jared is at least a mostly reasonable guy."

She listened to Evie speak and knew she was right, everything worked different for other people. And thinking about kids for most people was a big step, Pandora just had reason to be thinking early on. "Oh I get that and don't think I think it's wrong, it's just different. I'm used to being the abnormal one," she laughed, trying to lighten the situation a bit. "Tell you what, we'll make a deal. In two parts."
Clearing her throat she said "First part, we stay friends no matter what path we both go down, we'll never hold it against each other. Okay?" That would make her feel better anyway should things go wrong, but she didn't think they would. Or at least she hoped. "Second part is when we both have kids, we'll keep comparing how our lives are different so we both learn the other side of things. How about that?"
As to Jared being reasonable, Pandora smiled. "Oh I can see him being very reasonable. He's smart. We went out for a little while just the two of us and he asked me what I wanted to do I'd never gotten to and I told him skateboarding." She laughed again, remembering the balance issues, holding onto his shoulders, then his waist when he demonstrated stuff. It had been a very good session and while she had picked it up quickly, he had proven to be a patient teacher in that.
"He knew it so he gave me a few lessons. I think it was pretty cool. And he also agreed to take me out indoor sky jumping some day!" In fact, Jared had done what was needed if Pandora had been a nervous anxious young girl contracted into a wedding she didn't choose. Yes, he was very smart and she would be watching out for that...
