His eyes sought out Viona again but she was lost in the crowd of table and people all cheerfully passing things with laughter and loud conversations. The scene was pleasant for Walker who had never experienced chaos with such humor, more used to the grim orphanage or the wildly chaotic Hogwarts tables. Or even the mildly quiet conversation around his new family's home. No, this was a new experience and he sat there enjoying it for several minutes, a wonder at the fact this was his future really.Surely even his spitball of a sister felt swamped?
Grinning to himself at his grandfather's words, he nodded.
"Ooooh!" Now finally things fell together; he had found it an odd switch of careers after all. "That makes much more sense, thanks dad for explaining..." As he spoke and his grandfather ate, he was surprised at how well his grandmother's voice carried. And not just that but her words too! "R-really?" Boom! Now he had two connections to make him feel like he belonged!
"I have to admit it I thought it was a trick at first. You get used to not being wanted, meeting families and never seeing them again till you start to believe it really will never happen." He was silent for a minute in thought despite the noise around them. Then his eyes came up to hers and he smiled tentatively. "This summer, wow it felt like a real gift, a whole new life though it took awhile to stop waking up wondering if it was still a dream," he confessed, feeling that she understood his words.

Morna nodded to confirm that she was indeed adopted.
"Aye, lad," she said. "Me mum and dad were involved in a tragic accident when I was very young," she said. "Angus' family's neighbors, a lovely Squib couple, adopted me, and of course Angus and I met that way and feel a love in our teenage years." Morna then laughed. "I'll stop there. If I go on, your father will blush."
A number of the family then listened as Walker spoke of his reaction to the life change and how it was a dream come true. Alpin patted his son's back and Viona was so moved she stepped from her seat, walked over, and gave him a big hug.
"Well now," said Angus. "Seems like you were just set aside for a bit for the right family to adopt ya. Perhaps it was meant for me boy and his family to find ya at this time."
"I believe it was," said Alpin.

Hearing his grandmother speak he felt connected, but for an odd reason vindicated as well. So he had been right in thinking that others had made it, not that so many just failed and aged out! It felt freeing to know that there were odds for those left behind better then he would have thought. "Well it's convinced me if I ever have money, I'm going to adopt a bunch." Though he did smile back at her comment about his father.
Ha, he'd have to write his friends at the orphanage some more letters!
Not noticing the lapse in noise near him till he was nearly done, he felt suddenly exposed as if he had revealed too much, but the look in his grandmother's eyes told him he had done right. A pat on the back from his father and a hug from a Viona (who had appeared out of nowhere and he hugged her back, delaying her disappearance) helped to cover the uncomfortableness of the situation. Emotions had always been a weakness for him.
A grin and a nod at his grandfather's words certainly sealed the moment well. "I think you are right," he said glancing back and forth between grandfather and father, "and at least I know I can't eat a bakery out of house and home, right? So there is always that," he teased, feeling more comfortable then ever. "But thanks, thanks to all of you for making me feel so welcome!"

Alpin chuckled about Walker eating the bakery out of house and home.
"Not while I'm there, lad," he said. "They'll always be plenty to bake and replace what you've eaten."
Epilogue (Closing since Christmas has been over for a while and all)...
The rest of the meal went well as the rest of the trip. As always, the Zephyrs were sad to part with their extended family, and Angus and Morna showed how sad they were to say good-bye to their grandson, who they adored right away. Both gave him a big hug, as did many of the other members of the family. Now it was back to London and soon to Hogwarts for the two younger Zephyrs.
