Kat was a good bit upset. For once in all her years in Hogwarts, she was actually upset over a dance. She had been looking forward to asking Cole to escort her to the Eve of Lights Dance, but the she found out the rules stated that Cole wouldn't join because he was no longer at Hogwarts. Now she really wished she had became his girlfriend earlier. She really wanted the night to be magical, but now she wondered if she would even bother going.
But she couldn't concentrate on that now. She had a big exam to study for and Ancient Runes was not one of her better subjects. So with a sigh, she sat down and opened her book and began looking it over. She had to get the symbols down, and she was still getting the numbers mixed up.
"Okay, the Hydra symbol represents nine... that's an easy one," she whispered to herself. She then closed her eyes. "Let's see three is... three is... Salamander." She then opened her eyes. "Runespoor... darn it."
If only someone could hear her, they'd actually see more emotion in her voice than usual. That was because she wasn't usually this upset.

A lot of people probably got annoyed with Bryce being a know-it-all, and Kat also knew that some disliked him for not embracing being Pureblood like it made him better than others. There were those that didn't like Katrina because she felt the same way about blood. But Kat was cool with Bryce. Unlike a lot of Slytherin boys, Bryce was genuine. He was a good guy and Kat liked that kind of stuff.
"Yeah... yeah... that's right," said Kat when Bryce told her the info. "I should know all this by now. If I don't figure these numbers out, the rest of the term in that class is going to be a nightmare. Anyway, thanks Bryce." She gave the boy a small smile. "I think I'll get the hang of it. Can't really think clearly right now. This Eve of Lights Dance is coming up and the big plan was to go to it with Cole and I, but then i found out Cole can't go because he's no longer at Hogwarts. Guess the school's being cautious or something because of what happened over the summer."
Kat then realized she was throwing her problems on Bryce, which was unlike her. She decided to change the subject.
"So how are you?" she asked.

Kat then remembered Bryce was all gentleman-like and motioned for him to sit down if he wanted to. Again, she was appreciative of the genuine respect he showed her. There were a lot of other guys who pretended to show her respect in the past, but were instead trying to get a date with her. Not Bryce. He was just a nice guy.
"Problems are kind of like bad guests," she said. "They show up when you don't want them to and won't go away. If you need to vent about something, I'd probably find it more interesting than Ancient Runes."
Kat then shrugged when Bryce asked how she was.
"Aside from the Cole thing, I'm doing okay," she said. Well that and the fact that she thought of her late mother everyday. It had only been a couple of months since she passed, and Kat felt like it had been forever since she was alive. "Weird, huh? This being our last year at Hogwarts. Just when you think you've gotten used to the routine."
This was true, and Katrina was someone who stuck to a routine a lot of times, and she did almost the exact same things to prep for Hogwarts every year.

Kat smirked about Bryce saying his problems probably weren't as interesting as Ancient Runes.
"Bryce... learning a grass-growing spell is more interesting than Ancient Runes," she said. "But if you don't want to talk about them, that's cool. Just... you know... offer being on the table and all that."
Bryce's words were very true. Soon, everything would change for the two. No more classes, no more seeing friends on a daily basis, no more safety and security of Hogwarts. The real world awaited them. Kat thanked Merlin she at least had a plan for the real world.
"Well, guess we should make the most of the next few months," she said. Kat wanted to hang with Bryce more. She had really only befriended him not too long ago. She then thought about Cole and the dance again and had an idea. She doubted Cole would mind. He wasn't the jealous type.
"Hey Bryce, I was thinking if you're planning on going to that Eve of Lights thing, would you like someone to go with?" she asked. "I mean, just as friends and all. Who knows? It could be a lot of fun. We can talk more over punch and pretzels and maybe even dance once or twice."

Kat smirked over Bryce comparing his problems to hers. Bryce was brilliant, but he could be a goofy one now and then.
"I really find no joy in having more interesting problems," she said.
Kat then shook her head about learning lessons at work.
"Not me," she said. "Planning to be my own boss. I'm opening a museum in my mother's memory. I'm using our home. She pretty much left me everything. I wish she was still here, but I'm happy to have the means to honor her." Kat gave a small smile at that.
Kat didn't act overly excited when Bryce agreed to go with her. That was another against Bryce. She looked forward to it. Kat was just not the "whoopie" type of person when it came to reacting to good news. She was far too laid back.
"Well cool then," was what she said. "And yeah, I think I could probably have a pretty nice time with you. Maybe I can wear something pretty and sweet talk you into venting some of your problems off to me. Oh...wait... since when the hell did I start sweet-talking?"

Kat almost wanted to laugh at the idea of Bryce working a bar. Now that was a funny image. He really didn't have to tell her he was kidding though.
"Well darn," she said with her good-natured sarcasm. "And here I was hoping I'd get a free Butterbeer." She smirked at him. "Diplomat sounds good though, if that's really what you want to do. I'm pretty set on my goal."
Kat didn't expect Bryce to look like some prince from a Muggle fairy tale. They were just there to have fun anyway. She would dress nicely for him. Not how she would dress for a big date with Cole, but nicely nonetheless.
"Just throw something together," she said. "I'll be good with it. I mean if we're gonna dance or whatever, you don't want to feel uncomfortable doing it. By the way I hope you know how to dance because I'm not exactly light on my feet." Kat the looked over her material again. "Okay, so I think I got this; demiguise is zero, unicorn is one, graphorn is two, runespoor is three, fwooper is four, quintaped is five, salamander is six, seven is unknown, acromantual is eight, and hydra is nine."

Kat sighed a little, but then smiled.
"Don't be insulting Butterbeer in front of me," she joked. "I could live off that stuff."
Kat's face when solemn when Bryce spoke of his mother.
"She wasn't a happy woman," she said. "My father was everything to her when they were together, and then he just left her when she was pregnant with me. It placed an empty hole in her from then until the day she... went away. She loved me and took good care of me, and she said I made her happy. I think I did, but that emptiness was always there." Kat then quickly grabbed a tissue and wiped her eyes. "Sorry about that." Kat apologized because she was one who didn't like to show emotion in front of others.
She then smiled a little again about Bryce not coming to the ball dressing poorly.
"I'll try to not look shabby myself," she said.
She then repeated the numbers again as Bryce asked. She felt so relieved she was getting them. She definitely needed those down in order to grasp whatever was next in the class.
