christmas was finally a joyous occasion. in the years after his wife's passing christmas had been too painful for him to face without her. but in the last few years it had been getting easier. everything was ready for the day really, the lounge was littered with presents for both boys, there was enough food stocked in the fridge and around the house to feed an army, much less the three people staying in the house. cleitus had dragged himself out of bed before the sun had risen that morning. as he'd gone downstairs he'd remembered all the years that his son had beat him up to shake the presents under the tree and try and work out what he'd gotten before he could be caught and told off for not waiting for his parents. those days were long gone he reckoned, since his son was a teenager and hardly liked getting up before noon when he was at home, so cleitus assumed he'd be pretty safe. though this year it wasn't just him and his son. his son's friend was going to be thrown into the mix since he was staying with them over the holidays. he had been shocked when icarus had told him what had happened and it had taken him a while to come around to the idea that his son's best friend, who he'd seen countless times while the two had been friends and he'd spent so much time around that charlie was like a member of the family now, was indeed a vampire. recently turned mind you, but still a vampire. it was still sinking in to be honest that he was sleeping under the same roof and in the same room as icarus, but cleitus was trying not to think about what could happen, he was sure the boys were taking every chance not to let things go wrong. hoping was the word he'd use.
deciding that he didn't want to let them sleep or stay in their room for too much longer cleitus walked back up the stairs, passing photo's on the way and touching his fingers to one of his wife. christmas had always been her thing. sure he'd helped and he'd been there while everything was going on, but it had been hers. his wife had cooked the meal, wrapped the presents and put cleitus and icarus to work hanging up decorations and lights in the spots she wanted them, dragging the tree in from the woods near their house, because a magically conjured one wasn't good enough, it had to be real and still smell like the forest. so that's how they did things still. he smiled a little as he shook his head and walked up the rest of the stairs. he thought about creeping into the room and scaring them to see what their reactions would be, but decided against it as he remembered charlie. he didn't want to put the poor kid through anything this holiday so he made sure his steps could be heard as he walked toward the room. as he opened the door, he clicked play on a portable music player his wife had brought home one year, he hadn't understood it for a while and hadn't been sure it still worked but it did. as he clicked it he held it into the room and leaned his shoulder on the door frame, the music player blasting out christmas music into the room, of course it wasn't too loud, but loud enough in the quiet room. "merry christmas boys"
