HISTORY: Marlene Alexandra McLaggen was the first daughter born to her parents, and from the start, they knew they had a handful of a daughter. She'd followed a very fussy older brother, but she wasn't a cry-baby like he was. She was simply hard to catch. She learned to walk extremely fast, and her first signs of magic were at the startling young age of one year (she poked her brother in the cheek and he turned a violent shade of puce). Her childhood wasn't unicorns and witch dolls, but Quidditch, mud, and much more danger than her mother would have liked. She was the darling of the neighborhood that had a penchant for punching neighborhood boys (and her brother) in the face if they tried to step inside her tree fort. Still, despite rough beginnings, these neighborhood boys remain some of her best friends today (once they were able to become friends, at least). She always wore her hair short like them, and dressed as a tomboy, not caring about pretty shoes or dresses.
Marlene is partially the person she is today because of her family and the environment that they produced for her. Her parents weren't exactly absentee parents, but her father was a professional Quidditch player for the better part of her childhood. He was a good man, but with a quick temper and extremely high expectations of what his kids should strive for. This always turned Marlene off, from a young age. Even when he was forced into a wheelchair for the rest of his life, Marlene's relationship with him didn't improve. She watched from afar as her older brother tried his best to impress their father, and she, the rebel, refused to pine in the way that he did. She acted out constantly, and couldn't have been happier to go to Hogwarts and take her trainwreck lifestyle along with her.
There was no doubt in anyone's mind that she would be a Gryffindor like her father. At first, Marlene was perfectly miserable, much unlike other kids her age at the school. She wasn't good at making friends, and she missed her friends back home. Her overly confident attitude and cynical nature didn't really attract people towards her. She was seen as cocky, annoying, and super weird, especially because she was a girl who basically appeared and acted like a boy. Boys didn't want to be friends with her because she was always trying to prove them wrong, and they didn't like being shown up by a girl. Girls didn't want to be friends with her because she was the biggest tomboy in the school and couldn't related to anything feminine. She didn't solve anything politely, instead choosing to verbally assault her tormentors. Even that got boring. In her third year she was known for getting involved in fights. Thankfully, she started to grow out of that, but she never stopped threatening, laughing if anyone was scared by her.
The only cure was time. By her third and fourth years, she'd made a couple steady friends, miraculously. Those friends encouraged her to try out for the quidditch team, but she didn't need much coaxing. She made it as a beater. Her fiery attitude translated to the bat perfectly. Her success on the team was an asset, and she met and befriended more people, becoming much more comfortable at Hogwarts as she did.
Everything changed the summer between her fourth and fifth years. Hitting puberty at full force, Marlene finally started to feel different. She wanted to be like the older girls at Hogwarts. She was starting to see boys less as imbecilic punching bags and more as objects of affection. She was finally growing out of her childhood and into the strong, confident woman that she had the potential to become. Her curves grew in, and she started wearing clothing that complimented them (but only once in a while...jeans or shorts and a tank or tee were her staples). She charmed her hair longer and wore it around her shoulders, brushing it in the morning. Even her friends taught her how to use mascara. When she returned to school, few people even recognized her, until her cutting sarcasm and demeanor shined through. She appeared completely different, and boys started to notice. She was, in short, a babe.
Despite the changes, she's very much the same person, just shedding the awkward skin of her pre-adolescence. Marlene's making her way through school as best she can, excelling in wandwork classes and blowing off the rest because they bore her. She loves a good duel. Beating is still her favorite thing about the school, but her new affinity for males has been bringing her out on the weekend...hopefully she'll find someone who isn't completely turned off by her rough exterior. Her relationship with her brother has even improved, especially since she's been forced to keep his secrets..
