HISTORY: It was never explained why the Holt family went into hiding. For centuries they had remained a strong and steady bloodline in the Scandinavian wizarding community and they cautiously guarded their reputation. When Valdemar's first wife proved unable to provide him children, he remarried to the younger Iris Barbro Raske. While Iris knew she was marrying into a longstanding family feud, she did not know quite how deep and dark the bad relations the Holt family had with the Vinter family were.
Once upon a time, centuries before, the Holts and the Vinters had been the same family. In a period that was considered largely unfortunate, the family produced mostly daughters and through marriage the bloodline was split in two. The Vinters quickly made it apparent that they did not approve of how the wealth and secrets of the family had been doled out, as the Holts were placed at a great advantage.
There was even rumor amongst lesser family members, ones who did not hold as much power and sway, that a rather powerful artifact had been given to the Holts for safekeeping. The Vinters obviously wanted it for themselves.
Beyond that, all that was known was that in the year 2021, members of the Holt family started disappearing. In early 2022, the family seemed to disappear all together.
What the rest of the Wizarding world didn't know was that the Vinters, through blood and toil and years of planning, had finally amassed enough strength to try to overthrow the Holts. It was a silent war between families. Neither side ever made a public announcement and they both, indeed, seemed to purposely hide the fact that they were fighting. Part of it was pride, in that it was their own personal problem and they would so handle it on their own. Another part was likely the stakes; they didn't want any one else in the world privy to their secrets and their treasures. Lastly, they hid the war away because of the great lengths either side went to in order to provide victory - horrible and Dark magics were performed, tasks ordered and carried out that would never in thousands of years have been approved by the rest of the world.
In the end, the Holts were on the losing side. Though Lovise and Pia were guarded with extreme fervor, Valdemar had dragged his oldest son and Osvald into the fighting as soon as it had started. It quickly became obvious that it was not going to be a quick quarrel. Valdemar took his offspring out of Durmstrang, not wanting his daughters to become targets when he couldn't be there to protect them and also needing the full-time use of his sons.
It still wasn't enough. In a desperate attempt to secure the Holt bloodline, he gathered their wealth and their secrets and departed what had been the Holt home for hundreds of years. They moved to Britain, where Valdemar offered the Ministry a great sum of money to keep his family safe and to not delve into their secrets, and then he packed his children off to Hogwarts.
It was, after all, one of the safest schools around.
Unfortunately for Osvald, he had missed an entire year of his education and the new year had already started. He had, with much reluctance, agreed to be placed in a year behind his age and to be carefully monitored, in case he needed tutoring. It was a blow to his pride, but he could not exactly up and tell them that a year of fighting for your life more than made up for a year of school. What he hadn't quite realized, however, is that while the last year had made him unusually adept at curses, hexes, and defensive magic and instilled in him a powerful will, he had come to lack in the more practical use of magic and would likely flounder in day-to-day life.
