For the past five years, Nina had taken the trip to Diagon Alley to get her supplies for the school year ahead. She usually went to the same shops, bought the same things, aside from new textbooks for new classes of course, and dropped by the Bonfire Bakery for a quick treat. Her favorite there was the Cranberry Cauldrons, cauldron shaped cheese danishes with cranberry jam "bubbling" out of it. Holding it in a napkin so as to not try to get it on to her new purple sweater, she snacked on it as she walked into the Slug and Jiggers Apothecary to pick up some herbs and potions for the First Aid Kit she always brought to school. Afterwards, she would travel to the Quality Quidditch Supply Store for a new Nimbus. She wasn't on the team, but she was in the Broomracing Club and her current broom was worn out.
Stepping over to the healing potions, the fiery-haired, half-blood sixth year looked for those that would be most useful. Healing ones for scratches and cuts were always useful, and of course she would need one for winter colds and spring allergies. She rarely needed one for a stomach ache as she ate moderately and the food served at Hogwarts was top quality. Any thing she didn't have to buy, she wouldn't. After all, between textbooks, new robes, and the Nimbus- that was already taking a hefty chunk of the galleons in her purse.
She was well into her shopping when she saw something that upset her. Another Hufflepuff who was about to start her second year, and who Nina had seen and talked to when the child was a First Year was being picked on and called names by a Third Year Slytherin, all because the two bumped into one another because of the crowd. As Nina walked over and gave him a dirty look, she heard the Slytherin boy speak of how Hufflepuffs weren't worth his time, a sign of his cowardice in the face of a Hufflepuff Sixth Year (Nina) who was willing to stand up for a Hufflepuff Second Year.
"For one who has no time for Hufflepuffs, you are certainly spend a lot of time talking down to one," she said, but with a grin and a chuckle instead of a frown and growl. "Go find your mum and dad and whine to them about why you can't seem to tough it out in a crowded store." The Slytherin then walked off and Nina leaned down to the Hufflepuff Second Year and formed a Cheshire Grin.
"Would you like to have a bit of fun?" she said. The girl grinned back and nodded. Nina then looked over at the Slytherin boy, who was already into it with a First Year. Nina slipped out her wand and aimed it at him. "This is a wicked little spell one of my mates at school taught me. Rictusempra."
Suddenly, the Slytherin boy was on the floor and laughing uncontrollably. The spell made him feel that a number of hands were tickling him. Nina and her young new friend laughed as well, partially at how goofy the boy looked and partially at the looks of everyone who had thought the boy had gone mad! She then turned around and her smile dropped when she turned and saw her wizard father, Peter Devoll, standing in front of her, holding her chimp Amadeus in his arms. There was an awkward stare for a moment, then Peter looked at the boy, then back at her... and then laughed as well. Nina began laughing again, but then both stopped when they saw Nina's muggle mother, Glinda, who then laughed herself. But she then stopped and smacked Peter on the arm.
"Don't encourage her," she said. Peter nodded as he handed Amadeus over to Nina.
"A boy rolling on the floor like a bloody loon," said the chimp. Knowing Animal Communication for apes, Peter and Nina understood him perfectly. "I don't find a thing funny about it."
"Well, you need a sense of humor," sighed Nina as she took the chimp up to the register with her to pay for her items.
