HISTORY: The Longbottom’s weren’t sure what to expect when they found out they were pregnant again. Of course there was plenty of joy (even more when they found out they were expecting a little girl) but it wouldn’t be a truthful retelling to leave out the trepidation of the expecting couple. Jasper, going on two, wasn’t the easiest toddler and Hannah didn’t know what they’d do if Finnleigh was the same. Neville, on the other hand, seemed over the moon. If he had helped defeat Voldemort, surely raising a baby girl wouldn’t be too bad. The conflicting emotions of the two led to some anxious, hushed arguments, but nothing too terrible or memorable.
From day one, Finnleigh proved to be much easier than her brother. In fact, it was joked that the Longbottoms didn’t have a second child she was so well behaved. Always one step behind her brother, they developed a quick and unique bond early on. Although Finn was regarded as the ‘good’ one, she had a sense of loyalty to her brother and refused to rat him out to their parents or teachers. Jasper, in return, proved to be one of the few people she was comfortable with. If there was one certainty, it was that the Longbottom duo would always have each other’s backs.
Being fairly introverted, Finn opted to spend more time with her animals then with other people. It all started with a pregnant stray cat that stopped by the house one day in winter. Finn was five, and took an unusually strong liking to the cat, refusing to leave its side after her mum had refused to let it in the house. Neville, seeing a lost cause, persuaded his wife to allow the cat inside as they watched their small daughter bundled up like a marshmallow protectively watch over the cat into the late hours of the night. Finn knew just what to do with the cat and in the following days helped guide it through birth and cared for the kittens as well. The cat seemed to hate just about everyone else, but it was a natural mouser and earned its keep so the family dealt with it.
The day Jasper left for Hogwarts was one of the hardest days for her. She stood at the train station next to Lily Potter, tears welling up in her eyes. Both of them would have to wait another year before they could go and it seemed to pain them both equally. She wanted to be on the train so badly, to know she wasn’t a squib and to get to go on this adventure with her brother. She hadn’t cried up until then, how could she with her brother flaunting and taunting her daily? As the train pulled away she let the tears fall and decided to try to make the best of her year without her brother.
The wait for her own letter seemed to be excruciatingly long, especially after hearing stories from Hogwarts from her parents and her brother. The day her letter arrived was one of the best days of her life, the day she could finally breath easily. The Longbottom family didn’t really have any preference as to what house their children would get into, so Finnleigh didn’t give it another thought. She assumed she would be in Hufflepuff, like her brother, but the year of separation had allowed her to become comfortable with the idea of being in a different house than him. Sure enough, the sorting hat had placed her in Gryffindor and she happily accepted the house of her father.
Through her years at Hogwarts, she grew to dread the comments comparing her to her father or even her grandmum. The teachers drew comparisons as she easily excelled at Herbology and started to find her talents Finn was a bit uncomfortable being singled out in the midst of class and grew to resent the connection. During the summer between her fourth and fifth year, she undeniably started blossoming as puberty really set in. It’s not just her evolving look that has made this year so much more difficult, however. More recently, Finn has also been struggling with her sexuality, something that she keeps hidden from even her brother.
