HISTORY: Leanne Highland and Androl Marriott met during Leanne's time at Hogwarts. The two of them were five years apart in age, but met when Leanne was seventeen in her final year of Hogwarts. She was out with some of her fellow Hufflepuff girls in Hogsmeade when she met the then-22-year-old Androl serving at a bar; the two instantly hit it off, and within two years they were married.
Both of them came from pureblood families, and the wedding was a big and joyous occasion. Both families were entirely approving of the marriage, with minimal tension surrounding their big day. Since both of them were only children, it made the wedding seem even more of a big deal, with both sets of parents going all out to make the wedding perfect.
By this point, Androl had just gotten a job in a Quidditch supplies store, doing repairs and modifications on brooms. His position wasn’t overly high paying, but it was enough to support him and Leanne in their first stages of marriage. This was made easier by his rather well-off parents buying them a house as a wedding gift – and while Androl and Leanne accepted it gratefully, they also realised that this gift was a way to keep them from moving too far away, as the house was in the same town as each of their parents.
Still, it was a beautiful old house with a huge rolling garden, and the two of them were very happy there. It was three years into their marriage when they welcomed a baby girl into the family, April Marie. Being the first child of two only children, she grew up around a lot of adults who looked after her, but very few other children around her. As a result she developed a very vivid imagination and spent quite a lot of her time alone in the garden, which quickly became her ‘safe place’. This caused her to spend a lot of time in her own thoughts, which would strongly shape the way she interacted with people, particularly once she eventually got to school.
Her parents were always open about using magic around the house, and were watching carefully for April’s first sign of magical ability. She showed this when she was six years old, when she found she was able to cause a trail of flowers to follow her around the garden. Her parents were delighted at this display of her magical ability. April also showed a particular affinity with animals, which showed itself by wild animals in the garden being particularly calm around her. She considered many of these animals her friends – her ability to bond closely with them meant that they remembered her and many of them came out to see her each time she went into the garden. As she grew older, her parents eagerly awaited her letter to Hogwarts which arrived on her eleventh birthday.
April had mixed feelings about going to Hogwarts. There was a strong element of excitement about being able to learn more about magic, but also a significant amount of trepidation about the idea of going to a school full of other kids, when she had spent very little time around other children while growing up. She also felt reluctant to leave home, sad to leave behind her animal ‘friends’ and her parents. When she arrived, she was sorted into Hufflepuff, as both her parents had been when they had attended Hogwarts. She tended to keep mostly to herself, making a handful of close friends rather than a wide range of weaker friendships. She was often quite on the outer, and was seen as being a bit ‘out there’, or weird. She has quite a quirky side to her personality, and when people can get through to her, this side comes out more often.
Due to April spending so much time on her own growing up, she is still adjusting to how to respond well to people, and she tends to feel a strong need to be valued by those around her, and to be well liked. This, paired up with her introversion, often can cause her quite a lot of anxiety, as she doesn’t feel like she knows well enough how to interact with people to be able to make a good impression. She tends to be quite self-critical, particularly when she feels like she fails at making a good impression on people due to saying the wrong thing or being considered to be weird. These sorts of feelings often lead to her seeking space from people, which is another thing that drives her to spend a lot of time outdoors and around animals (who she believes are much simpler and less judgmental than people).
For those who do get through to April, and get to the point where she is comfortable around them without feeling pressure or anxiety to act a certain way around them, she is a very loyal and true friend. She is still learning how to be a good friend in terms of which things she should share and which she shouldn’t – she tends to keep many things to herself, which can make her friends feel like she holds herself back from them, when really it is because April feels that she isn’t interesting enough to have things that are worth sharing. But encouragement from close friends in this area would cause her to share more of how she thinks and feels with them.
