HISTORY: Merida Tchaikovsky (or Meri as she likes to be called by her family) was born as the third girl out of five in the family, not including the half-siblings. It wasn’t the easiest or the most fun family to grow up in, but she grew up well schooled in manners and etiquette, and being taught from an early age of the importance of family and what it meant to be in an important pureblood family. It was quite competitive between the girls as they grew up, as the family didn’t end up with a son to be the family heir. So, particularly for the older three girls (Vasilisa, Cinderella and Merida) there was quite a lot of competition between them to be valued within their family, but they still were very close.
The family are very focused on their pureblood heritage, and share a strong disdain for muggles. While Merida is often considered one of the kinder people in the family, this only goes as far as the family itself, and other purebloods; it most definitely does not extend to muggles. She does make an effort at times to include their half-siblings, unlike some of her sisters who hold them in contempt. Meri is wary of them, but sees the benefit in keeping them on side rather than alienating them. It is clear that she has the ability to be kind, but uses this in the right situations to try and get what she wants. Her kindness covers a very fiery temper, so anger her at your peril. This temper doesn’t result in fits of rage, as she is still very proper – but if she has cause to be angry at someone, they will very likely live to regret it.
Like most of the girls, Merida inherited an animal affinity from her family. They have a long history of dragonology, and Merida grew up hearing stories of the majestic dragons and longing to have a chance to be a part of the family business. However, being a girl meant that her father Erik would not allow her the opportunity to interact directly with the dragons, much to her frustration. Her dream is to be able to work directly with the dragons, and to tame them herself and be able to fly them; but this is a much more hands-on approach than her family is willing to let her take.
Like both of her older sisters, Merida received her Hogwarts letter at age 11, and went to the school and was sorted into Slytherin. This was becoming a trend among the Tchaikovsky girls, as she was the third in a row to be in Slytherin. It suited Meri perfectly, as she was strong-minded, ambitious and manipulative. She does have a particularly kind front, though, so often came across as being relatively friendly for a Slytherin. She found as she developed during school that she could use her looks to manipulate boys even further, and she often used this to her advantage.
During her time at school she discovered her love of duelling. Merida had a particular affinity for wandwork, and her wand demonstrated that – aspen wood being particularly suited for duelling, and a dragon heartstring core allowing for more powerful spells. She was a standout in the duelling club while at Hogwarts, and took great joy in defeating many of her fellow students. Her results in school were outstanding – literally, O’s across the board, as she tends to pick up information very quickly, particularly with wandwork.
There is a side to Meri that nobody else knows, and that is that she has a secret romantic side. She knows that it is reasonably likely that she will be entered into an arranged marriage by her family, but she hates the idea of that and longs to be in a loving relationship and marriage chosen by herself. However due to the way she has grown up, learning to manipulate people using her looks, she doesn’t very often get emotionally close enough to people for a relationship to form. If it did, it would have to be a very particular kind of person to be able to handle her, though.
Since graduating from Hogwarts, Merida has gone on to follow her sister Cinderella into the Ministry of Magic, more specifically into the Department of Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. She hopes to use this position to loosen the restrictions on dragon training, but she is still very low-ranking in the department so it will take some time to make any progress at all with that. She hopes to someday go into dragon training, if she can get past the hurdle of her father getting the males into this position.
