Isolde sat quietly in the library. This was not just because the library rules encouraged her too. She tended to be quiet everywhere. Most of the time, if the Ravenclaw uttered more than three words in a day, it was a surprise. And she enjoyed the library because she usually didn't have to say a word. She could sit and do casual reading or study and do homework without being bothered.
As the library's hours were almost over and it was near time to return to her dorm, Isolde finished up a section in the book she was to borrow. It was a book of grim poems by a wizard poet named Gulliver Desmaul. Desmaul often lamented about things that happened in his real life as opposed to writing fictional poems, and that made Isolde relate to him more. He was a recluse for most of the second half of his life, and died alone in his home at a young age. Isolde wondered if she would suffer the same fate.
The current poem she read was one called "Summer Devil" and was about Desmaul's cold stepfather, who's abuse Desmaul had to endure when he wasn't at school. Isolde knew all too well what the poet went through, given what her own mother and father did to her. @ollie

Ollie found the library a nice and relaxing place. Even when there wasn't study to do, it was a nice place to go and read, either fiction, or non-fiction. He spent quite a bit of time here to relax and get into books, which was a nice escape for him. Today he was planning to read through a fiction book by a Muggle author his mother had told him about. Having Muggle parents meant that Ollie knew quite a lot about Muggle literature, and was also able to learn a lot about wizarding literature as well. It was the best of both worlds really.
He entered the library and looked around, spotting another Ravenclaw, Isolde. Ollie didn't know her well; they had spoken here and there, being in the same house and same year, but she tended to keep to herself a lot. Still, he decided to go and take a seat next to her; at least he would see if she was at all interested in company or not. "Hey Isolde," he said, taking the seat next to her. "How are you going?"

When Ollie first sat down next to Isolde, she clammed up. The fact that a student was suddenly sitting next to her like that was bad enough. The fact that it was a boy, and an attractive one at that, was worse. For a moment, Isolde buried her fact deeper in her book, briefly eying the clock on the wall to see if it was time to leave.
When he said hello, said her name, and asked how she was, she looked over at him. She and he had spoken before... if one counted the word or two that came out of her mouth along with his a conversation. She knew his name too... Oliver. She was actually fairly decent with knowing the names of those in her House and Year. She said nothing for a moment, then finally spoke up.
"Fine," she said. And that was it for that part of the convo. She said enough to let him know how she was, though it wasn't entirely true. She was still upset about her sister leaving Hogsmeade. Still, she didn't throw her problems on others. She didn't ask him how he was in return, but was now at least looking at him in case he had something else to say.

Ollie knew that she generally was fairly choosy in how she used her speech. Well, that was an understatement, really - it was an effort to get more than one word out of her, most of the time. He wasn't quite sure how to read her, though. Did her 'fine' mean she was actually fine and happy for him to stay there, or was it more of an annoyed 'fine, but I want you to leave'? Subtext was tricky to read with certain people, and at the moment he found it a bit tricky with Isolde.
"That's good. What are you reading?" he asked as he got his own book out of his bag.

Isolde saw the confusion in Ollie's face over the "fine". Perhaps she could have said something more to show that she was seemingly doing well and that it was fine if he sat there as well, but she felt he would figure it all out. As anti-social as she was, she had never told someone to go away or bugger off or anything like that. In a way, she was somewhat happy when someone took the time to talk to her, as long as it was one of two people. If five or six approached her at once, she would freak out and run long before she told them to leave.
When he asked what she was reading, she looked at the book and then back at him.
"Poems," she said. "Desmaul." She then bookmarked her book and handed it to Ollie to show him. If he found the poems interesting, she was curious as to what his thoughts might be. Desmaul was an acquired taste though, as he depressed most people into putting the book down and finding something strong to drink to forget what they just read. After handing him the book, she looked down at the table, tracing her name with her finger while she waited for his thoughts.

Ollie wasn't just asking for the sake of asking - he was genuinely interested in what she was reading. He had a very deep interest in literature himself, particularly literature he hadn't seen before. When she mentioned Desmaul, his eyebrows raised curiously. "Oh, I've heard of him but never read anything of his," he replied, and accepted the book when Isolde passed it to him.
He had a quick flick through, opening to a pretty random page and reading the first poem he came across. That was the good thing about a poetry book, you could pick and choose your way through it. Ollie took a few minutes reading through this particular poem, then looking up at the ceiling thoughtfully before replying. "Well, his outlook on life isn't all sunshine and rainbows. But it's interesting how he balances his bleak outlook with quite a rigid use of meter, I feel like it creates a kind of... momentum in what he's saying, and adds extra weight to his words," Ollie decided, handing the book back to her. Only a Ravenclaw could have that kind of analysis, and probably only another Ravenclaw might appreciate it. "What is it that you like about him?"

When Ollie said he never read anything of Desmaul's, Isolde felt that she knew where this was going. He would probably hate it and the conversation would end. He would probably start doing whatever he came to do, and all would be quiet until it was time to go to the Common Room.
However, that was not the case at all. Ollie gave a good analysis on Desmaul after reading some of his work. She nodded in agreement. She didn't want to add anything, but when he asked her what she liked about him, she felt it was polite to say a few words. She tried to think of what to say. She gulped and little and spoke.
"He speaks to me," she said. She then took the book and flipped to a page and showed it to him. "I like this one most." She paused again for a moment. She was about to ask something that would have her talking so much more than she had ever really done in a conversation with another student. But she was touched by his thoughts on Desmaul, and wanted to share the poem she really liked with him.
"May I read it?" she asked softly.

Ollie was genuinely interested to hear about what she liked about Desmaul, too. He wasn't sure if he himself was likely to get into reading more of Desmaul after this first taste - it was still a little on the depressing side, and however good the writing was, it might not have been something that would be helpful for Ollie to read a lot of as it might affect his outlook on things. But at Isolde's suggestion that she read one of them out for him, Ollie masked his surprise and nodded. Did she really want to read a whole poem out to him? That sounded very unlike her. Maybe she was opening up, which was good. "Sure, that would be really nice." She had a nice voice, he thought she should use it more often.

Isolde gave Ollie a small smile when he said he would like to hear her read it. It was almost like an honor to her that she was allowed to.
"Aylena at the River," she began, saying the poem's title. She then went on:
"I stand at the river where I have found, No burning quenched nor sorrows drowned. I see myself in it, though I find, It's her reflection in my mind.
My beloved witch, my fondest friend, She still lives where she met life's end. Cast herself from the mortal plane, The quiet of the deep would silence her pain.
I write my final fate and vanish in the night, I descend so soul mates may reunite. I close my eyes, my hand is there to take, That she may hold it when I again awake."
Isolde closed the book again and looked at Ollie. Her smile dropped.
"It was Desmaul's last poem," she said. She wanted to go on about how Desmaul had indeed taken his own life due to his sorry over his dead wife Aylena, who had drowned herself five years before he did due to a deep depression. But once she had finished the poem, she found herself able to speak little again for the moment.

Ollie listened, transfixed as she read out the poem. It was depressing, he supposed, but it was powerfully written. When she finished, he didn't feel like he had a lot to say. "Wow. That was pretty intense," he replied, thinking on it more. "You could really feel his longing in it." He wasn't quite sure what else to say about it for now. He wondered briefly why it was his last poem, and went over the final verse again in his head. "Wait. His last poem... did he end his life after writing that?" he asked, something clicking in his mind. It fit with the words in the final verse.

When Ollie said the poem was pretty intense, Isolde nodded. It was intense, and at the same time it was beautiful. Isolde always felt that death could be a beautiful thing. It brought peace to those who might not have had it in their lives. And as Desmaul said, it brought one back together with those one cared for and had passed on. Isolde had ever really lost anyone she loved via death, but she could still related. After all, she was losing her beloved sister Morgaine to one she feared. The man known as Dathan Burke. She feared with one like him, she would lose her older sister for good.
When Ollie asked if it was his last poem because he took his life, Isolde nodded.
"Yes," she said. "He missed her... Aylena." From reading the poem, Isolde wanted to believe that the two were truly together, but she was never quite sure how life after death worked. She had heard all these different things about what one was to expect from all over the world, and she had no idea who was right... or if all of them were wrong.
She then looked at the clock.
"Time," she said, pointing it out to Ollie that the library was about to close. She then smiled at him, as if to invite him to walk with her back to the Common Room after she checked out her book. And she did. Ollie was nice and didn't act poorly toward the poetry. He seemed like he would be okay to befriend.

Ollie was glad that the two of them could somewhat bond over the poetry. This was more of a conversation than he had ever gotten out of Isolde in their time at Hogwarts together, but he felt like they were actually engaging with each other this time, which was good. "Yeah, it's very clear how much he missed her," he agreed. "It must have been so hard knowing that she had taken her own life beforehand." It was quite a depressing topic, really.
When Isolde mentioned the time, and pointed at the clock, he looked up at it and realised that indeed the library was about to close. Both of them stood up and picked up their bags, and Ollie waited as Isolde checked out her book. He hadn't gotten any out as he had just come here to read his own book. "Are you heading back to the Common Room, too?" he asked her.

Isolde nodded about the poem. If something had happened to one of her sisters, she would be in such a depression. She wasn't sure if she would do as Desmaul did, but she would be in a far darker place than the one her parents had put her in.
"Very difficult," she said, regarding how hard it had to have been on Desmaul.
When Ollie asked her is she was heading back to the Common Room, she guessed that he was going to walk with her father all. Her small smile widened at this. Perhaps when they got to the Common Room, they could talk more too instead of her just going off to bed like she usually did. Perhaps she could talk more to him.
"Yes," she said. "You?" There was hope in her voice that he would say yes. She then went over and checked out her poetry book. Once that was done, she nodded to Ollie.
"Ready," she said. Even if the didn't talk in the Common Room, the towers were a few floors up, so perhaps they would have a lot of time to talk on the way. Isolde was glad to have met Ollie. She trusted few, but he seemed to be very genuine.

While the general thought was that Isolde was a bit frustrating that she spoke in such short sentences, Ollie was finding now that he didn't mind it. It was like she was saying what she needed to say, no more, no less. Sure, it was nice when people were able to elaborate on things a bit more, but that was the way that she was, and she still got across just as much as people who were chatting away constantly. When she asked if he was going to, he nodded with a smile before she let him know that she was ready. "Let's go, then," he said as they headed out.
"So how is your preparation for finals going?" he asked her as they walked.

Isolde nodded when Ollie said it was time to go. She followed him out. She said nothing at first, but just smiled at him here and there. Then he asked about Finals. Final prep had gone very well for Isolde due to her strong book knowledge. She had read about every class she had over and over again and then some. She barely needed to study for them at all, though she did anyway. Still, she was not one to boast or brag. In fact, that was almost the exact opposite of her nature.
"Well," was all she said in regards to how she was doing with preparations. "For you?"
She was now showing interest in Ollie. It was not just how well he was doing in his exam prep either. She was interested to know a lot of things about him. What did he like to do? Where did he like to go? What did he like to eat? What was his family like? The trouble was... how did someone like her even begin to ask all that? Even around someone she was growing to like, she could ask so many questions. She would feel silly and nosy and pushy. And she didn't want Nick to think of her that way.
So she went with something simple.
"What do you like?" she asked.
