"We're brothers -- and no matter what sets us apart as different or unique will never get in the way of me having your back or you having mine."
FAMILY: Dustin is the only magical child of Cynthia and Richard Greene, the product of a wizard father and muggle mother. His brother, Thomas Richard Greene, is a year younger and well aware of his brother's abilities. Nearly inseparable since they could both walk, the two brothers have maintained a positive and loving relationship throughout their teen lives. Cynthia and Richard kept the family's magic hidden from their children for as long as they could, preferring to give both as normal as a childhood as possible. And it was indeed pleasantly normal. With summer vacations in Australia and winter getaways to Spain, the Greene family lived a quite typically British life. Raised in their London condo, Dustin and Thomas grew to call the city their home and spent countless hours riding their building's elevator up-and-down and up-and-down while their mother, a marketing executive, was busy working. Mr. Greene maintained the facade of a traveling salesman for as long as he could, in part because it excused his frequent abscesses, but when the magical cat was let out of the family bag, he came clean about his rather average job as a low level Ministry bureaucrat working for the Department of magical creatures.
With the arrival of his letter of acceptance to Hogwarts of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the passing of the initial chaotic excitement, young Devin looked eagerly forward for his new life. With September came the start of term and the first time that Dustin had lived away from his parents and, more importantly, Thomas. Though it was hard for both boys, the duo assumed that in just one year the younger brother would be off to Hogwarts, too. Unfortunately, Thomas' letter never came.
The summer between first- and second-year was the most difficult in Dustin's life. Ashamed, embarrassed, and angry that he was 'left out', Thomas' relationship with his brother deteriorated to the point of constant fighting and bickering. Equally upset and only slightly more understanding, Dustin was aggravated in his own right and allowed the relationship to sour. With no good-bye and a worried look from both parents, the two brothers parted ways when Dustin returned to Hogwarts.
The months apart did much to numb the pain of each boy, and when Dustin arrived home for summer holiday it was clear from the beginning that the mood had thawed. With the exchanges of stories, brotherly combat, and the healing powers of youth the two again became fast friends. Thirteen and ready to conquer the world, Dustin made a promise to support his brother no matter what -- and Thomas agreed to do the same.
Using his father's owl, Thomas and Dustin remained in regular contact while separated by school and have become each other's closest confidant. While the hormones of fifteen have brought on their fair share of distractions, delays, and priorities, Dustin does his best to reply and fill his brother in on life at Hogwarts.
"I mean who doesn't wake up wishing - just for a moment - that they were sorted into Ravenclaw when they've got a big test in the morning. But I wouldn't trade my Yellow-and-Black scarf for anything."
PERSONHOOD: It took the Sorting Hat less than three-seconds to sort young Dustin into the noble house of Hufflepuff, and ignorant of the rumors, stereotypes, and taunts that were so commonly whispered by a few, he cheered and smiled when he heard the news.Today, Dustin reflects on himself as a good friend - though perhaps sacrificial to a fault - and is always willing to lend an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, and a word of advice. He is very much a man to wear his heart on his sleeve and a smile on his face. Freely admitting to other's that he may at the very least 'appear' soft, he does indeed enjoy the quiet of a library, the warmth of the Great Hall, and the serenity of the Astronomy tower over the chaos of Quidditch, dampness of the dungeons or the haunted feeling of the Forbidden Forest.
Dustin accepts confrontation as a fact of life, but finds himself too prone to flinching (and too adverse to pain) to raise his fists. Despite this he had a secret admiration for Wizard dueling and on more than one occasion has dreamed what it would be like to stand and duel as a champion.
Through his brother, Thomas, Dustin maintains a solid connection to the Muggle-world and the popular culture of his time. He very much so prefers city life to the rural countryside and admits it took some time to adjust to the odd isolation of Hogwarts. He enjoys swimming, telling stories, skiing, and coffee. A badly kept secret, Dustin is also a decent singer and can often be caught humming when he thinks no one is listening.
Unlike his father and brother, Dustin lacks a love for animals and finds the larger variety quite intimidating. He's nearly useless when it comes to making a decision that will impact others, and is more than willing to play follow-the-leader. In addition, the young Hufflepuff had an uneasiness with being served or doted on, and as such questions the conditions of human-like creatures like House Elves.
"How on Earth is it possible that I'm better at jinxing counter-cursing than I am digging up speaking plants - especially when the damn plants are giving me advice on how not to suck!"
SCHOOL: For the most part Dustin isn't sure if he's good at magic or just at taking tests and studying. His favorite subject is Herbology, which struck even him as odd given his preference for cities and concrete, but he had discovered a pleasant 'zen' to tending to plants and learning the spells that go with it. Despite this passion, academically Dustin's best subject is Defense Against the Dark Arts, to which he received an O (Outstanding) O.W.L. whereas he only received an E for Herbology. His worst subjects are History of Magic (Poor) and Transfiguration (Acceptable).
An avid reader, Dustin is more likely to have read about a spell and its execution than to have tried it out. As a result he scored exceptionally well for the written-portions of the O.W.L.s and did sporadically for the practical demonstrations. He has no intention on studying the 'darker' aspects of magic.
His Wizard father, Richard Greene, is open and willing to also only talk about magic and very rarely demonstrates it to either of his sons.
"I guess Hogwarts really isn't that different from your school, Thomas, I go to classes, hang with friends, - flirt - you know, the usual. Though I guess you don't have ghosts at your school... that you know of, anyway."
EXTRA HISTORY: It isn't entirely fair to say that Dustin has occupied two distinct world since he first set foot in Hogwarts. The constant back-and-forth with his muggle brother and summer vacations back home - where magic was nearly forbidden - contrasted quite obviously with the fantasy of school life and wands. Nevertheless, it is equally unfair to say he has managed the balance perfectly. He had tried his best to stay connected to his brother's life while exploring to his fullest the magical realm around him, but more and more he finds himself infatuated with magic. By his third year Dustin and Thomas continued their letters, though the older boy's replies became increasingly infrequent. Surrounded by good friends and increasingly obsessed with his studies, the Hufflepuff found it both harder to tare himself away from ghosts and spells and difficult to express his experiences honestly but simply so that his brother could both understand and avoid jealousy.
At Hogwarts Dustin set off to make friends and grow into himself. Unsure of everything, he studied hard, listened doe-eyed to the magical stories of his pure-blood friends, and spent many a young night restless in his four-poster as he imagined what fantastic careers awaited him as a grown Wizard.
Socially, Dustin's experience has been rather positive with members of all Houses, though he has grown to embrace the subtle competition and pride between them. He has avoided Quidditch like the plague and has never once considered trying out for his House's team. Slightly scared just watching the players go back and forth, Dustin also has a history of avoiding the games all together and using the sudden emptiness of the halls to study, eat, or escape into the green houses.
