Born to Graham and Natalie Pritchard, you were the second child out of three. The middle child, but never forgotten or loved less than the other two. Your home life was nothing less than wonderful, as you had two of the most loving parents and two siblings that you got along with very well. Sure, you had your moments of rivalry and spats, but don't all siblings? You loved your older brother and little sister and would do anything to keep them safe, no matter what the cost. Of course, your brother was the most protective, always keeping an eye on you and your sister, especially when it came to boys. But that didn't apply to one boy; one boy that would become your best friend at a very young age due to family friendships.
You lived next door your whole life to the Coote family. Your older brother was good friends with Nevan Coote, while you got paired with Ryan. You didn't mind really, even though you were of opposite sex. He was a really fun person for you to be around and you felt like you could be yourself around him. Your brother trusted him too which made it even better. But how could he not when the families knew each other and seemed to all be friends? So, you attached fairly quickly to this boy that you seemed to be around a lot and soon you were best friends.
The time you spent with Ryan was incomprehensible as you both were inseparable and did everything together. You loved the time you spent with him, from the families getting together for dinner, to the snow days full of snowball fights and snowman building. It was all perfect in your mind and you wouldn't change it for the world. You were there for him as well as he was there for you. There was no mistaking how close you two were and you felt like it was a forever deal. He was even your first kiss at age seven, when you and your friends decided to play catch and kiss at your birthday. It meant something; it really did, but after that day you thought of it no more.
Not everything was peaches and cream in your lives though. Of course, it was never like that for anyone. You remember getting the news that Nevan had fallen off the bridge and that Ryan had accidentally been at fault. That sentence was really a contradiction, but it was the truth. Ryan hadn't meant to push his brother off the bridge, he just pushed a little too hard. You remember as soon as you and your parents heard the news, you all were off to the hospital. The first thing you did was rush to Ryan's side, taking his hand in yours and giving him a small smile just to let him know you were there. Even when your parents said it was time to go, you insisted on staying. You were not going to leave Ryan's side, no matter what. He was your best friend and you knew he needed you. So you stayed, even when your parents left.
It was two weeks after Ryan had gotten his Hogwarts letter, that you received yours. He promised you that he would wait to open his until you both could open it together. He came over that day to open his with you and as soon as it came in the mail, you both teared into the letters, excitement written all over your faces. Your brother and his had already attended Hogwarts for a year, but now it was time for the both of you to experience the large castle that would change your lives forever. When you both arrived at Hogwarts for the first time you couldn't believe your eyes. It was absolutely beautiful; better than you had even imagined or heard about. The only thing that upset you was the fact that you were sorted into a separate house from everyone else. You were sorted into Hufflepuff, while everyone else was sorted into Gryffindor. Even when your little sister arrived the year after, she was sorted into Gryffindor. You remember crying about it that first night at the school, because you were away from your best friend, as well as your brother. It was going to be hard for you.
And it would be that way. However, at first, you were surprised how easily you picked up friends. A lot of the people in your house were really nice and you enjoyed their company. You even made friends from the other houses, including Slytherin. What you didn't know, was a few of the girls in Slytherin were not actually your friends. They were using you to do things for them and slowly bringing you down when they could. Still, you tried not to see that part as you wanted to believe they were your friends. They were popular after all. It made you wonder why you even cared. You never cared about popularity before. But there was something about being their friend that kept you around. Things changed when they decided they no longer wanted to keep you around. They cornered you one day, throwing insults and making you feel like you were inferior. They made you feel ugly and fat, even though you were nothing of the sort. You were crying and asking why they were talking such nonsense. You thought they were your friends. That was when you saw the dark haired boy come up and push the main girl, saying that you were prettier and much more amazing than them. When they had left, you found yourself in your best friend's arms, crying.
Though his words stuck with you and helped a bit, they didn't keep the words of those Slytherin girls from swirling through your mind over and over again. Your mind even played back every moment from the past, making you realize they were never your friends because you were starting to actually see what they had said was hurtful and manipulative. This affected you more than you thought it was. It took a year for anyone to realize what was going on with you. A year, before you passed out from starving yourself. You ended up in the hospital and it was soon out that you had become anorexic. Of course, only to those like your family and the Cootes. You were embarrassed about it, once everyone in both families knew. But it was especially embarrassing for you when Ryan found out. You didn't want him to see you less than what he did and you didn't want him to think you were crazy. But he didn't think any of those things. Just like you had stuck by him when his brother took the fall, he was with you the whole time it took for you to recover, which was not an easy thing to do. But, you did it over time. Not that the feeling was fully gone. You were still very insecure about yourself and there were on and off times where you wouldn't eat. But you never got as bad as you had before. You were afraid to get to that place again, so you tried your best to stay strong and away from people and things that would cause you to relapse.
The summer before your sixth year, your family and the Cootes decided to take a summer trip to the lake. It lasted for two weeks, but it was one of the best trips that you had ever been on. You were able to spend time with your family along with your best friend and his. Your sister stuck to you and Ryan like glue, seeing as she didn't really have someone her age like you had Ryan and your brother had Nevan, but you didn't mind too much. You loved your sister and wanted her to feel like she wasn't just some third wheel or ninth? That was, if you counted everyone, including the parents. But there was a moment at the end of one of the days where it was just you and Ryan sitting by the lake. The moment was perfect as the sun was setting. Feelings were bubbling inside you that you had never felt before and they were for Ryan. But you couldn't be feeling that way for your best friend could you? You decided to push it from mind and try to forget about it. You were friends, and he would never like you that way. This is how it should be, our families together. Your head turned to look at him after those words were spoken. What did he mean?
