It's all about the memories, isn't it, Ryan Coote? Let's take a walk.
March 27, 2007.
"He's beautiful… let's call him Ryan."
"He's beautiful… let's call him Ryan."
Okay, so this isn't exactly a memory of yours. It was the day you were born. Second child of two, to Ritchie and Megan Coote, and you would be the last. Your father and one-year-old brother came into the room and laid eyes on you for the first time. This was your family. These were the Cootes.

"Aww, look at them together."
"Aww, look at them together."
Your family had just moved to Kingston. You were two years old. Your parents were having their next door neighbours, the Pritchards, over for dinner, as they had a new daughter themselves, as well as a three-year-old son who was around the same age as your brother Nevan. The two families became close friends and would do this many, many times into the future. You and Kaylee Pritchard, each two years old, were rolling around on the floor together, playing with blocks and oblivious to the inseparable friendship you would later be forming.
January 3, 2013. "Do you wanna build a snowman?"
Your family and the Pritchards went up to the snow together. Your brother hated it, winter was his least favourite season. But you adored it. It was your first time experiencing snow and you had an absolute ball. You and Kaylee ran around together, having snowball fights, and then teaming up, sneaking up on various family members together and throwing snowballs at them before running off in fits of laughter. Then you made snow angels together, and finally a snowman named Hubert, before Nevan (and Kaylee's older brother) ran in and attacked it, knocking it down and ruining all of the work you and Kaylee had put into it. You shared in your mourning for Hubert. By this point the two of you were already the best of friends, even just at five years old.

"I want to be the only one who catches you."
"I want to be the only one who catches you."
It was Kaylee's seventh birthday. After the cake had been cut, the parents went back inside to chat while the 20-odd kids played in the backyard. You and Kaylee were still inseparable, even with all of the other kids around. Naturally, someone then came up with the idea of playing catch and kiss. There was a lot of running around... but you only ran after Kaylee. Although, she didn't seem to be running away too fast, either. The two of you were each other's first kiss, that day. It was just a peck, but it was one that you would both remember. And then someone else nearly caught her, and you 'accidentally' ran into them to let her get away. Even at seven, you were protective of her.

"Help! Quick! My brother fell from the bridge!"
"Help! Quick! My brother fell from the bridge!"
You and Nevan were walking across the Kingston bridge to go to the cricket nets in the nearby park, to practice together. You both enjoyed playing sports together, particularly Quidditch, but this was hard to play in the middle of Muggle London, so cricket was the next best thing. As you often did, you were arguing with each other, about which team was better; Puddlemere United, or the Appleby Arrows. The argument got more heated than usual, though, when Nevan said something about your team that really struck a nerve. You responded angrily and pushed him, harder than you usually pushed each other, but it was the unintentional angle of the push that resulted in Nevan falling from the bridge into the water below. You panicked, and ran down to the river bank and desperately called some people over for help, before diving into the water to swim out to him. You have never been more scared in your life than that moment when you swam out into the river and couldn't see him anywhere. Eventually one of the other men who jumped in with you dived underneath the water and pulled Nevan up to the bank and called an ambulance. You knew that it was your fault he fell from the bridge. And you would never forget that.

"Thank you… for staying here with me."
"Thank you… for staying here with me."
Nevan was still in the hospital, but he was recovering well. You were sat by the side of his bed, feeling terribly guilty for what had happened. Kaylee was sitting there next to you, holding your hand supportively, trying to stop you from beating yourself up too much. Her being there helped, but it didn't ease the guilt you felt. You had nearly killed your own brother - you had a right to feel guilty about it. Still, Kaylee stayed by your side the entire time you were there, refusing her parents' insistence that she was staying there too long. She was there for you, more so than your brother; it was here when you realised how much you could rely on her; even when you felt like the worst person in the world, she was there for you.

"Let's open them together. On three, okay?"
"Let's open them together. On three, okay?"
Your birthday is only two weeks before Kaylee's, so you promised her that you would hold off from opening your Hogwarts letter until she had hers as well. That two weeks seemed to drag by… and you were sitting with her in her house when her letter came. The smile on her face lit up the entire house, and yours wasn't far behind it… mostly from seeing her so happy. Bursting with excitement, you opened your letters together, and it was the start of the seven years that you would spend together in Hogwarts starting the following September.

"Wow… it's so much bigger than I thought!"
"Wow… it's so much bigger than I thought!"
You had seen Nevan and Kaylee's older brother off at the station the year before, but this year it was time for you and Kaylee to make the trip for the first time. There were many hugs, and tears from each of their mothers, but they made it onto the train. The only people you knew were each other and their older brothers - so the four of you stuck together in one of the compartments. You met a few of Nevan's second year friends, and a few other first years - particularly when first years were sent down to the boats to cross the lake for the first time. You and Kaylee experienced it together, the castle looming up in front of them in the moonlight in all its breathtaking glory. Both of you were devastated at the moment when Kaylee was sorted into a different house to you. She grew to love Hufflepuff, but it was hard having her separate from you, and everyone else in the Coote/Pritchard clan who were also in Gryffindor.

"She is a million times more beautiful than you will ever be."
"She is a million times more beautiful than you will ever be."
You and Kaylee developed your own groups of friends at Hogwarts. You were in different houses, so it was difficult to see as much of each other as you would have liked. But that day when you walked past the crowded entrance hall and overheard some Slytherin girls calling Kaylee ugly and tearing her down? You saw red. You stepped in and pushed the other girl away, and told her firmly that Kaylee was more beautiful and amazing than that girl would ever be. Unsure how to react to the interruption, the Slytherin girls departed. You weren't going to let anyone speak to your best friend like that, and you didn't care who knew that. If anyone was going to try and mess with her, they would have to go through him.

"This is how it should be. Our families, together."
"This is how it should be. Our families, together."
Those words had more layers than Kaylee understood when you said them. Your two families were on a summer holiday together, a road trip to a lake resort, where you camped out for two weeks, and lazed around and played in the lake during the day. It was just the nine of you, the four parents, and the five kids. You and Kaylee made a real effort to include her little sister who often felt left out as she didn't have a Coote counterpart, but it was always about you and Kaylee. During the trip something changed for you in the way you looked at her… and it was weighing heavily on your mind. You couldn't deny the way you were feeling about her, but you were terrified of ruining the friendship. The two of you sat by the lake as the sun set, and that was when you spoke those words. Sure, the families being together was nice, but all you could think about was sitting there with the most amazing girl in the world next to you. Do you have the courage to risk changing that friendship forever in the hope that it could be something more?
