HISTORY:
After the war, many magical folk were looking to settle down into a new, much more peaceful life. Some put all their efforts into rebuilding. Others threw themselves into work, hoping to put it all behind. And others still left the magical world all together. Michael Brewer was one of those people. He fought in the battle of Hogwarts, sneaking back into the castle when those too young had been sent away for their own safety, as an idealistic forth-year. He left the battle a much more quiet lad. He had witnessed his best friends killed, and he himself had the Cruciatus Curse used on him. As soon as he graduated, despite the fact he could've easily gotten a high-ranking ministry job for his efforts in the Battle, Michael became part of the muggle world, drowning out the nightmares that had plagued his sleep in the mundane-ness of the non-magical world.
He started out as a farm-hand in Norfolk, but as his boss, the farm's owner, grew older, he left the farm in his best worker's name. Michael inherited the farm joyously. He planned to live his life like the previous farm-owner had - dedicated to the farm and unmarried, but a woman by the name of Hannah soon changed that. As far as Michael knew, Hannah was a plain muggle, just like he was pretending to be. Michael liked the idea of his children having a simple, muggle-life, and he was in love with the woman, so he married her. And not long after that, they began having children. First came Dave. Then came little Joey, middle-child. Last came Rick. The family was happy, and one-hundred percent normal and muggle. Sure, Michael knew that his children would get Hogwarts' letters one day. But he had spent many a day devising ways to keep them from actually receiving those letters. For their protection, of course.
Then came the day. Dave was enjoying his eleventh birthday party with his family, with plans to go out with his friends later that day. Michael had spent the entire day on the look-out for birds of any type, even going as far as to shoot at what vaguely looked like an bird in the middle of lunch, though by the time dinner rolled around, nothing seemed to be happening. Until Hannah stood up and made an announcement Joey was young, but he clearly remembers the shock on his father's face as his mother announced that she was a witch. Though he was young, Joey remembers being the last one to understand that his father and mother had both withheld information about their pasts to each other, and that they wee both part of some sort of 'magical world' that they were trying to get away from. Joey can also remember running away from the arguing that broke out between the two parents (something none of the children had ever witnessed before) with his brothers.
Joey can loosely make-out details of coming across the body of an owl in the woods, though he can clearly remember the letter the owl was clutching. It was addressed to Dave. Inside it held details of Hogwarts, and a school supply list. Joey loosely remembers camping out that night (nothing new or hard for farm boys), and talking over everything with his brothers. He can't recall - nor does he try to recall - the details of the following weeks. Though his parents stayed together, things were tense. There was angry all around about being lied to, and many awkward (and forced) explanations. Both parents only agreed on one thing, and that was not sending their son - any of them - into the magical world. However, after enough outbursts and accusations, and many nights spent camping out in the fields, Dave went to live with Michael's parents, and eventually was sent to Hogwarts through them. He came back the next summer, but the damage had been done
Not wanting to loose another son, Joey was taken to Diagon Alley the second he got his Hogwarts letter. Which he was thankful for. Joey knew he didn't have the guts to stand up to his parents or move out. Nor did he have the heart to bring his parents the grief that moving out would cause. It wasn't that Joey was angry that his brother had practically ran away to grandparents they'd never met before, but he knew for certain he didn't have that type of back bone. Since the re-uniting of the family, things have returned to normal (well, as normal as they could be in a magical family), and Joey's parents have stayed together and on the farm. The scars remain, however.
Come Hogwarts, young Joey was sorted into Hufflepuff. Having been raised on a farm, he did great at the practical arts, but was horrid at most wanded magics. His parents never seemed to mind though, much to his fortune (if you think about it in a positive way, a 'Poor' in Charms is a lot better then getting a 'Dreadful'. Which is what he got in Transfiguration, but that's entirely besides the point.) Currently, Joey isn't too concerned with happenings outside of Hogwarts, as he's been more focused on making it through N.E.W.T. year with passing grades.
