The air was warm and damp, clinging to every bit of concrete and steel that built the city of London. Night covered the city in a blanket of dark humidity. It had rained most of the day, which had kept the little girl that now walked the quiet streets under cover, but the rain had stopped now. 11-year-old Gemma was now free to walk the dark streets of London, which were less crowded now that the hours ticked by in the middle of the night. She wore a black hoodie that was twice her size, simple blue jeans, and a pair of black converse hightops. Under the hoodie was an oval-shaped face flecked lightly with freckles under her hazel eyes and along her nose. Tangled blonde hair framed her childish face, shiny with grease as if she hadn't bathed in a few days. She was small and thin, but not quite unhealthy yet. She hadn't been gone for more than a few weeks, and she'd stolen enough money to feed herself at least once a day.
Most people were asleep at this hour, cozy in their beds, though not Gemma. Maybe a month ago she would've been in bed with the door locked above the basement stairs, her parents snapping for her to be a good girl from behind the door. Gemma was a good girl most of the time. Her "incidents" had always been accidents, not intentional, though did they believe her? No, of course not. Gemma had set fire to the curtains without touching them after her mother had told her they were ugly. She had thrown that pretty porcelain kettle of hot water across the room while she had been sitting on the couch (excited for her morningly cup of tea). She'd made their new golden retriever puppy Hunny run away from home after growling playfully at her while wrestling, clearly spooking the poor animal without meaning to.
This was a small list of things she did to scare her family, and herself. Her mother (being painfully religious) had always believed her to be possessed by a demon, though Gemma never actually felt possessed. Wasn't demonic possession supposed to hurt or cause psychological issues? Gemma always felt fine, completely healthy. She was smart and playful and brave. She hardly even ever got sick. Her health and mental sharpness didn't change the fact that her parents were afraid of her. Even her little brother was weary around her. It made her sad, and lonely. She always snuck out of the house at night through a little window above her bed, never during the day. The only times her parents took her out in public were when she swore and promised and pleaded, and threatened. Her threats were always empty, though sometimes she was desperate for freedom from their tiny house.
Well now she was free; a runaway. Being freshly 11 and still very young, she was weary of London's streets, so she'd stolen a pocket knife from a pawn shop.. ya know, just in case she was ever in trouble. Gemma wasn't sure exactly how long she'd stay away from home. Her parents probably missed her, though there was probably also a sense of relief on the household.
Now she walked the streets of London. Big Ben chimed eerily in the distance, signaling with twelve deep BONGS that it was midnight. I should probably find somewhere to sleep for the night, she thought to herself. Her little feet carried her down into the subway, taking her through the empty hall and to the ticket machines. She only had a little bit of money left, but that didn't worry her at the moment. Few people wandered through the subway, waiting for whenever the next train would arrive. Gemma sat down on a lone bench, taking her backpack from her shoulders and laying it beside her. Maybe she'd sleep on the train tonight.. or maybe she'd take the train home. She wasn't sure yet. A yawn parted her jaw, letting out an obnoxious sound. Her eyes had only been closed for a brief second, though suddenly in a loud POP, someone was sitting beside her. Gemma jumped in fright, cutting off her yawn, and nearly fell off the bench. "W-wha?" she stammered, too frightened to move away from the woman who had suddenly appeared beside her on the bench.
"Oh, my apologies, dear. I didn't mean to startle you," the aged woman told her kindly, resting a hand on Gemma's shoulder. She was wearing long black robes and a pointed black hat, which wasn't an outfit seen often in London. Her eyes were round and warm, comforting almost. Suddenly she wasn't so scared, and she sat up straight, facing the woman. "You must be Gemma. We have a lot to talk about." That was when the train arrived and the woman placed an envelope in her hand. It was sealed in red wax marked with an H.

Since Gemma (pronounced "jem-uh") Leanne Parrish began attending Hogwarts, she blossomed into a very smart and very daring young witch. Naturally curious, she is always willing to learn any new magic, eating anything new like candy. She has particular interests in potions and magical creatures, and she plans on having an occupation in one of the fields. Gemma spends a decent amount of her free time experimenting with potions, which can sometimes end badly, though she's careful and less reckless with her potion set at her age. Gemma makes friends fairly easily and can be a bit of a flirt. She's the type to hang out with the trouble-makers, being as adventurous and curious as she is. She is also a brave young witch, being the type to do anything during a game of truth-or-dare or put herself between two fighting witches/wizards. Though she may seem bright, brave, and friendly, she isn't all so great. She has an extremely wild temper and can sometimes be over-the-top or violent when she is angry (which isn't too often). She can also be very stubborn and closed-minded. If she believes in something very strongly, it's hard to convince her otherwise.
Gemma has naturally blonde hair, though she dyes it various shades of red and orange to help in showing her proud Gryffindor spirit. It's usually cut in a short, choppy fashion. She loves the colors hot pink and neon green. Her favorite food is shepherds pie. Her biggest fears are complete darkness and being unable to breathe. She hates flying on a broomstick and she has two ferrets; a white, deaf ferret named Lumos and a brown and tan ferret named Knox. She loves them to death and can sometimes be seen walking the halls or attending classes with one in her robe pockets. When she isn't in school uniform she wears mostly skinny jeans, boots, and any type of cut-out tshirt, hoodie, or tank top. As you've probably noticed, she likes to stand out.
