LIKES:
DISLIKES:
BIGGEST FEAR: Gabriel's biggest fear is dying without having left a legacy worth of his intellect and ability, or his perception of his intellect and ability anyway. The feeling of inadequacy that creeps over him in a Dementor's presence is almost suffocating for him, as if all his life's work has been for nothing, something of an existential crisis magnified by a thousand.
His other great fear is to experience true loss. True, he felt some with the death of his mother and later father, but he is terrified of being the way his father became after his mother's death – To have devoted his life to someone so completely, only to be left in a rut when they are no longer with him.
PERSONALITY:
FATHER: Yaron Templar (Biological, Deceased) Francis Wintercowl (Adopted, Deceased)
SIBLINGS: N/A
HISTORY: Gabriel's mother hadn't bothered to tell her husband that she was a witch until roughly 10 minutes before their son's birth. Most men would have buckled under such an emotional overload, but Yaron Templar had served in the Israeli military for over a decade before feeling to London. The chance meeting with his wife had been while avoiding hate from pro-Palestinian demonstrators he had came across by accident. He was a tough man, and he took the new information as well as he could. Within a week, it was just normality to him. It did not change his love for his son.
For the first few years of his life then, Gabriel grew up a child of two worlds. His mother Surranne taught him all she could about the wizarding world, instilling in him the importance of magical knowledge as well as practical ability, and from the earliest days creating an air of reverence and mystique around the hallowed learning ground of Hogwarts, building Gabe towards the day when he would begin his attendance. By the same token, his father tried to keep the boy grounded in the culture of the world he knew, and from as early as he can remember Gabriel would spend hours watching films and listening to music with Yaron, as if it was his father's attempt to keep a hold on something he didn't understand. Gabe loved it.
His life was like this, idyllic and seemingly perfect, until he was 6 years old. His mother, a writer of Magical Creatures books and encyclopedias, was to take a trip to Southern Asia, to study dragons in the area. It was fairly routine for her to take time away on such excursions, however this was one she would not return from. Barely a fortnight had passed when word reached Yaron of his wife's death, a gory affair that left nothing to bury. For as strong as the man had been for all of his life, this was the straw that broke the camel's back, and grief consumed him entirely. Gabriel had to learn quickly how to take care not only of himself, but also of his father, who while never abusive fell into a cycle of negligence as he began to drink more, reeling from his loss. Daily, he would cry himself to sleep on a living room armchair, Gabriel hearing his tears from his bedroom above, and joining in with his own. They still spent time watching films together as they had always done, but it was hollow – The family had been broken.
It was with a heavy heart then that Gabriel left for Hogwarts, aged 11. He was well prepared, thanks to the vast amounts of money his mother had left behind, and when he was sorted into Ravenclaw house he was more than ready to race his peers to intellectual superiority. His mother's lessons ringing in his ears, he soon caught up on the gulf of magical knowledge he had came to the school with, and found himself prospering academically. Socially however, he struggled – His thoughts often drifted back to London, where his father was alone. Gabriel wasn't sure if the man would survive without him, and it hampered his ability to relax. Only study could offer him some solace.
His fears proved fruitless, as his father was in much the same state as he had left him in when he returned for Christmas. His first 5 years continued like this, a limited social life in school and holidays spent picking up the pieces of his father, until just weeks before his OWLs, he received word that Yaron had passed away. While he felt a great deal of sadness, he realised soon that this was not news. His father had died years ago, along with his mother. All that had changed was that the shell that had been left behind was gone too.
His age made matters of independence complicated – Technically, he should have been fostered for a few years, his family home left waiting for him when he came of age. However, he was saved this indignity by a new teacher to the school, Francis Wintercowl, the Ancient Runes Professor. He had taken a liking to Gabriel, for his keen academic talent, and arranged to adopt him instead. They reached an arrangement, that Gabriel would be allowed to stay in his own family home, with Francis visiting every few days to assure his safety. He also took the opportunity to tutor Gabe in his weaker areas – Mainly his social life. He taught Gabe how to talk with confidence, how to be perceived as a man to be respected, and indeed how to be a man. Gabriel combined this with the film and television he had continued to watch (Francis, a muggleborn, often joined him), and when he returned for his 6th year, he was a new man.
From there, he became a truly remarkable wizard, forging friends in his final years and excelling in as many areas as he possibly could. He left Hogwarts confident, with fantastic grades and a bright future ahead of him. He had already started as a researcher, following in his mother's footsteps, although focusing on Magical Theory rather than on Magical Creatures. He remained close friends with Francis, calling on his adoptive father often as his counsel, his test reader, and drinking partner. It was a terrible shock then, when Francis died the week after Gabriel's 28th birthday. He felt the loss perhaps more then he had when his father had died, for here had been a man who had spent the last 13 years molding Gabriel into a success story.
In the wake of his death, the position of Ancient Runes Professor opened up, and Gabriel was surprised when he received a letter asking him to come for an interview. Apparently, Francis had left note that he felt the young Mr Templar would be a fine successor, and had mentioned it to the headmaster many times. His interview went well, and within a month he had taken up residence as the new Professor of Ancient Runes at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Immediately, his competitive instincts returned, and he set out to be the best damn teacher the school had ever seen. This has so far paid off in spectacular fashion but Gabriel has no intentions to stop. His dream is to forge a legacy, to have someone remember him as he remembers Francis Wintercowl, and to be nothing short of exceptional.
