Ben felt out of place at Twilfitt and Tatting's, and normally he didn't have the galleons to spend there. But he had saved up for a rainy day, and instead of deciding to wait for such a rainy day, he would spend part of it on his re-found love, Millie. He wanted to buy her a Christmas gift, something in jewelry, but something apart from the typical cheesy stuff. Because for Ben, Millie was more than ordinary, and deserved to wear something extraordinary.
So far though, all he found was typical stuff at the jewelry counter- the same trinkets he had seen countless people wearing. Nothing seemed to scream "Millie", especially how Mille... and he... were now. He was about to give it up when he saw something at the end of the display case. It was a necklace with a beautiful silver wolf's head with ruby eyes. It drew Ben over quickly. He had never seem something quite like it. That was it! That was for Millie. Ben looked up for the nearest clerk to help him, only to frown when he saw they were helping other customers.

She stood up, and looked around her room. The rather large mess of different piles of colored fabric was slightly obscured by the chunk of blond hair that fell in her face. In a huff, she blew it away from her vision, and then got a better look at her clothes. She had pieces from all of her decades, but so very few from this new one. Maybe it was time to go shopping. Last time she splurged on a bunch of clothes was some time between the 70s and the 80s. Not like that was a bad thing though. That time was totally her decade. However, there is only so many times you can wear something before it just falls apart. She was going to have to buckle down and actually get new things.
She got dressed not thinking about the temperature outside. Her top was cropped, exposing her belly, and her pants had quite a few rips in them. It may have escaped her attention, but it sure didn't escape everyone elses' stares. She was exactly dressed for December in the UK. Stupid move. Not in the US anymore. Winters in California needed a different dress code. Basically the same dress code as summer. Katalina just had to shake the funny looks until she could get back to her room. She needed to find the closest open fireplace to make it to Diagon Alley. Once she got there, she started looking through some of the shop windows.
The blond needed a good clothing store. One that sold more than just Hogwarts robes. Finally she found a window that displayed decent looking attire. A store called Twilfitt & Tattings. As soon as Kat opened the door to the shop, she smelled something. It wasn't a bad smell. It wasn't a good smell. Actually, it was more of a scent, kind of like the scent of a different person, but this was different. It was something she recognized, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. The closer she got to the counter, the stronger it became. Until she saw a guy standing there. She must have met him somewhere. “I-I'm sorry. But, Do I know you?”

Ben thought he had finally gotten someone to come over, but the somewhat stuck up cashier told him to wait a moment. Sniffing at her, he could tell she looked down on him a bit, an eighteen year old not wearing the most high class clothes. Ben dressed well, but he definitely didn't dress like he was made of money. He then simply nodded and smiled.
While he waited, he heard a girl's voice. At first he didn't think she was speaking to him, but then turned and noticed her looking at him. From a brief scent of her, and Ben had learned by now that a werewolf tended to pick up scents without really trying to, he noticed that she did not smell like any other human being he had smelled yet. Did that mean something? And why did she think she knew him?
"Um... I don't think I've met you," he said, trying not to sound rude as he wasn't trying to be. He then extended his hand and gave her a friendly smile. "Ben... Ben Maxwell, if the name rings any bells. And you are?"

Katalina had no idea what had come over her, and she definitely could have done that smoother. Maybe a simple hey would have been better. However, now that the words were out, she couldn't take them back. Kat decided to just roll with it. Then he just shot down her only idea. He didn't recognize her. So, either there had to be some other explanation, or he was lying. Usually, lying would be the most probable explanation first, but she didn't feel like he had any reason to lie. There was still something very familiar about him. Then she had a thought. Maybe it wasn't him specifically. Maybe there was just something about him that was familiar. Kat realized about a second too late that she was staring, and must look very odd to him.
She saw his hand shoot out from his side for a handshake. Kat snapped out of her thoughts. She reached her hand to grasp his, and then she felt something. His heartbeat. Ben's heartbeat was off. It wasn't nearly human, but what was it? That's what was so familiar about him. “Katalina. Katalina de la Vega. And you're right. It doesn't sound familiar. I must have been... mistaken.” She just returned his smile, and looked down at one of the cases. He was looking at one of the pieces of jewelry, and she spotted it. It was a wolf with red gems for eyes. “That's pretty. For someone special?” The wolf.
Suddenly the realization hit her, and a flashback of the last time she encountered one of them crossed her mind. A flash of fear passed. She felt her eyes change size. Her whole body tensed up. He was a werewolf. She couldn't run. If she ran, he would follow her. She couldn't cause a scene and draw attention to herself. All Kat could do was stay there, and hope. The blond was going to get out of there. Maybe she would leave with injuries, but she was going to get out if it was the last thing she would do.

When Ben shook her hand, he saw the reaction in the girl's eyes to... something. He noticed her hand was a tad cold, but that could have easily been due to the weather. He decided to continue to ease the tension by being his usual friendly self.
"Katalina de la Vega," he said. "That's a very pretty name." He then looked down at the wolf necklace. "Yes... it's for my gir... well a girl I care a lot about." Was Millie his girlfriend yet? Their whole relationship was an odd one, especially with Milo in the picture. He wanted her to be though. He loved no one now as much as he did Millie.
He then noticed Katalina looking upset again, and had that uneasy feeling again that there was more to her than met the eye.
"Are you alright?" he asked. "I hope my face doesn't remind you of someone unpleasant." He blushed a bit, genuinely hoping he wasn't somehow frightening this poor girl.

The blond girl saw the reaction to his observation cross his face, and she had a pretty good idea what she must look like. However, the vision of what happened the last lime she met a werewolf crossed her mind more than once. She was crossing through the woods from New Hampshire to Massachusetts one night in the fall of 1941. It was a full moon, and she knew that she shouldn't be out there. In fact, she was mentally berating herself the whole run because it was dangerous. However, the guy back in New Hampshire was getting too close on her trail, and she hadn't eaten anything in two weeks. Katalina was hungry, and scared, and desperate, so she made the run for it. Unfortunately, when she neared Salem, she ran into trouble, literally.
She air started to smell different. Now, with the magic school nearby she expected that sort of thing, but this smell was not the smell of witch. It was defiantly more animal, and it was something she wasn't familiar with, but made her edgy. Kat picked up her speed, but didn't stop. That obviously was a mistake. First she heard the snarling, then came the smell of wet dog mixed with dirt, then she saw the big gray and black werewolf coming at her from the left side down. It chased her, and cut her corners almost better than she did. She managed to get out one swipe at his shoulder, and brought her hand back with a clump of fur. When it snipped at her, she high tailed it into the trees. Keeping up in the tree, she was able to make it to a more densely populated area where she was able to breath, and check out her body. Her shirt was ripped into shreds, and there was just the slightest smear of evidence that something came close to her skin. Katalina nearly died that night, and she had made it a point to stay away from the things like werewolves that were going to kill her.
Ben opened his mouth, and told her that she had a very pretty name. She faked a small smile for a fraction of a second, and then her eyes darted to all of the immediate exits she could safely make it too. Katalina quickly noted that he wanted to say girlfriend, but didn't. That meant that he wasn't exactly in the best of moods because he didn't have the girl he wanted, but he was feeling generous. “That's really sweet, Ben.” She kept her comment brief. Then he asked if she was alright. This was a little confusing, but he could either be trying to lure her into a false sense of security, or he just didn't know what she was yet. “Oh, no. I'm alright. Thanks for asking.” Then, out of her high adrenaline and bit of fear, her emerald eyes flashed crimson before she could stop them. That was something only a vampire could do.

Ben just smiled and nodded about being called sweet. Ben had always been the "sweet one". He was never the tough guy or the jerk. He was always in the "sweet" category. Sometimes he wondered if that was why Millie still hadn't wanted to confirm a relationship with him. Did she like tough guys like Milo? He quickly wiped the thought out of his mind as it began to stress him.
"Ah, it's nothing," he said. "And besides, one would expect such a lovely young woman to have such a name."
He was about to just nod when Katalina said she was alright, but stopped when he saw her eyes changed. He had read about this before. Only one being could do that. The girl he was speaking to... was she a vampire? Not that he minded. He never had an issue with a vampire, and being a werewolf didn't change his feelings toward them....
Wait... did she know he was a werewolf? If so, did she have an issue with a werewolf? He wanted to know. The girl seemed nice and he didn't want to make an enemy of her.
Once he finally got a cashier to give him the necklace and then paid her for it, he turned to Katalina.
"Um... would I be imposing if I invited you to have a cup of tea with me?" he asked. "Casually of course. I promise my intentions are honorable. You just seem... interesting."

That was such a big mistake, but she couldn't control it. It was her instinct reaction when her whole body was pulsating with adrenaline from the fear in her. Now, this was a new feeling for her, or at the very least not something she was very used to. Katalina de la Vega wasn't afraid of a whole lot, however she normally wasn't this close to something that could kill her. He went on for more flattery. He called her lovely, and praised her name again. Kat just flashed a smile again at him, and then it was gone just as quickly. He finally looked away from her to pick up the necklace that he had bought, and as soon as he looked away her head darted around, looking for a way out.
Her head snapped back to him, not wanting to keep her eyes off of him, just a fraction of a second after he looked back at her. Then he, very casually, asked her to have a cup of tea with him. He knows. The blond knew right then that he knew what she was, and he was probably just toying with her. She couldn't run. Too many things could go wrong with running. She was stuck with him, and he tried to impose on her that he had honorable intentions. Right. Honorable. Right up until you take a chunk out of my arm and leave me to die. However, the Slytherin kept her thoughts to herself.
With another fake smile, she responded. N-no. Not at all. I'd be g-glad to.” Her words came out just a little breathlessly, but she was glad she was able to get them out at all. When he called her interesting, and barely audible scoff came out of her mouth, and she breathed, “Interesting.” She just turned, and began to walk real carefully towards the door, knowing that he would be behind her. Once they got out of the shop, she assumed he would take the lead, and direct her to where ever they were going.

Little by little, Ben began to sense Katalina's caution of him. He was still getting use to smelling such things, but he was getting there. He didn't want her to be suspicious of him. Vampire... werewolf... whatever. He was far from vicious, even in wolf form. In fact, he was like a playful pup in that form and was only vicious when a cruel soul threatened someone he loved. Katalina hardly seemed cruel. He hoped sitting over a cup of tea would clear things up. Leaving the shop with her, he decided to get the secretiveness out of the way.
"Listen... I want you to know that just because I'm a werewolf, I'm not a monster," he whispered to her, making sure no one else was catching the convo. "The last thing I want to do is harm an innocent." His voice was one hundred percent sincere, and he hoped the vampire girl picked up on that. He then smiled a little. "So... you're a vampire, huh? I... I saw your eyes change." He hoped this would help ease any tension.

Kat tried to behave. She didn't want to draw any unwanted attention her way, but she was also still looking for a way out of the situation she was in. Where was he going to lead her? Down a deserted back alley where the rest of his pack was? However, if they were alone, she reasoned that she could probably fight her way out. The blond then felt the heat that was coming off of him draw closer to her. Even though he was warmer than she was, she got a chill from it. He closed some of the space between them, and she felt the air that was left heat up. Then he dropped his lips close to her ears, and his voice down to a whisper. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end. With his voice so low, and him so close to her, calling her high strung was an understatement.
Just because I'm a werewolf, I'm not a monster. Well he wasn't going to beat around the bush about it. And it was obvious that that was just a way to ease her tension. Probably to make it easier to catch her by surprise. The last thing I want to do is harm an innocent. The word innocent made her drop her tension just a little, but only long enough to make her pop out a sarcastic laugh. “Innocent. Me? Right.” That totally killed his security deal. Then he out right called her a vampire, and chalked up the recognition to her eyes. Well, he certainly know how to break the ice.
She kept her voice down low like his, as they drew closer to a cafe. “Yes. I'm a vampire. A very old, very strong vampire. Just so you know.” She was finally able to even out her facial expression, and she just tried to keep it calm. Maybe, just maybe that would scare him off, or at least put a little hesitance in him.

Ben realized that innocent was probably not the best word. Being what Katalina and he were, both had lost a good deal of their innocence. At one time, Ben would have never hunted an animal in the forest, but now he did so. But he made a vow to never harm a person as a werewolf unless there was a very good and noble reason to.
"Well, you know what I mean," he said when Katalina made it clear she wasn't innocent. "I mean I wouldn't harm someone unless they tried to attack me or someone I loved first."
He nodded and clammed up a bit when Katalina gave him the subtle warning about how experienced and strong she was as a vampire. However, being one who loved making new friends, he was determined to win her over.
"I'll definitely remember that, Katalina," he said. When they arrived at the cafe, he held the door for her. "But I promise you I have nothing against vampires and I have no intent of doing any wrong to you. You seem like a nice person, and I honestly hope we can part today as friends."

As they neared the cafe, she was still ahead of him. Then he darted out in front of her, which gave her a start. However, all he did was hold the door open for her. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion, so you could just barely see the green peaking out. They didn't leave his face though, as she passed by him. “Thank you,” she said cautiously. Once, they were inside a more crowded space, she felt just a little more comfortable. Kat made a bee line for a table in the back corner, but as she was walking, she scoffed at him. “You and I seem to have very different opinions of the whole innocence and reasoning..thing.” HE wouldn't harm someone unless he had to, for protection. SHE didn't kill people because it was hard to hide from a trail of bodies.
Apparently, he took her words as the warning they were meant to be, but he finished his thought with trying to convince her that he was a good guy, and he wasn't going to hurt her. Well, you won't be hurting me in public. Kat was sure that she was safe for now because they were in a semi-public coffee shop, so she let her guard down just a little. She kept her jacket on because she had a feeling that she was already drawing enough attention to herself for not being bother by the cold, and walking around in a sleeveless Rolling Stone t-shirt wasn't exactly would people normally wore right now. The blond sat down, and grabbed a menu. “People don't usually describe me as nice. And I have very few friends. So I wish you all the luck in the world darling.” She really wasn't trying to be rude, but it was best for her to stay on the safe side.

Ben wasn't sure how Katalina saw the whole innocence thing, so he just sort of shrugged at her.
"I suppose we don't," was all he could say.
When Katalina replied to his offer of being friends, Ben knew it might take some work to truly earn this girl's trust and respect. This was hard for him because every woman he had ever significantly known, be it those his age or the mothers of the children he tutored, had trusted him right away and with good cause. Ben was a good person, and was now still a good person.
"Well, I suppose I can start by making sure we don't leave as enemies," he chuckled.
He found a seat in a private corner so they could talk about who and what they were without being over-heard. He ordered his usual tea and looked at her.
"So you've been around for a while, huh?" he asked. "And here I thought my eighteen years on this planet was a long time."

She watched him shrug, and just rolled her eyes at it. He said he supposed that they didn't view it the same, and she could take that one of two ways. She could assume he was lying, and that he really could try to hunt her down the next full moon just because of what she was. The other option was to take him at his word, which would mean he was practically a marshmallow, wouldn't hurt a fly, and would probably be something she would eventually pick out of her teeth if he ever got too snippy. It was a difficult decision to make, but really, all she was focused on was letting him think he got what he wanted, and getting out of there.
Then Ben said something about enemies. “Even though we are genetically programmed to be?” She smirked, but it wasn't filled with so much venom. It was actually kind of comical. Kat's emerald colored eyes scanned the menu, and she decided on whatever the first thing was that no coffee. That was a little tidbit of information about her that no one would have expected. Katalina hated coffee. She ordered a hot chocolate with mini marshmallows and left it at that.
It was funny, what he said next. When people usually found out what she was the first thing they asked her about was either the blood thing, or her age. Ben decided on her age. “You should never ask a lady her age Ben. It's impolite.” That was something from back when she was growing up. There were certain things you just didn't ask, or didn't talk about. It was all about the Victorian manners. “Yes, eighteen is quite old. If you add one hundred and twelve years to it.” The blond decided to just get it out of the way. She was a 130 year old female. Thankfully she didn't have any of the wrinkles to prove it.

Ben had never really heard of exactly how vampires and were supposed to act around one another, so this struck him as a bit odd. He went from being his charming self to being serious for a moment.
"Wait... so you're saying because some brainy wizard or witch... or perhaps even a Muggle wrote it down somewhere, you and I are supposed to hate each other?" he asked. "I'm sorry, Katalina, but that sounds ridiculous. I don't believe in that. I'm sure you chose to be a vampire about as much as I did a werewolf. That's almost like when some Purebloods hate Muggleborns just because of who and what they were born as, and I definitely don't believe in that. If you expect me to hate you, Katalina, in this form or my other because of what someone said once, I'm sorry to disappoint you."
He then lightened up a bit. Wow, was that inside him? It certainly wasn't the side of him that was a sweet Hufflepuff alumni.
Ben blushed a bit when Katalina spoke of not asking her age.
"I apologize," he said. "That was rude of me." He wasn't sure if she was joking with him or not, but felt the need to apologize anyway.
But then she told him and at first Ben didn't know what to say, so he decided to brighten the mood again with his charm.
"Well... if you don't mind me saying so, you look amazing for a 130 year old," he said. The tea then arrived and Ben silenced himself until the waiter left. Ever the gentleman, he poured for both of them. "I'm guessing when you turned, your life suddenly went on a crazy broom ride like mine, huh? It was so weird, all the smell and sounds and I was craving meat like crazy. I pigged out at the Leaky Cauldron my first day as one." Ben laughed at that.
