"This isn't good Karen, not good at all! It's an omen or something, I shouldn't be going tonight!"
The vampire moved from one side of the room to the other, a frantic pace. With more than a little nervousness for the night before her, Malory Ballor had managed to not only tear her dress but also misplace her shoes. The Ravenclaw's roommate was sitting on Malory's bed tracking the girl's pacing like she was watching a tennis match. "Mal, seriously calm down!" The blonde girl, Karen, flicked her wand and the tear in the dress was mended. Of course it would be Karen who found the solution in magic, a muggleborn would always look for less practical means. "You're going to have a wonderful night with a wonderful guy who you are lucky to be going with! If I didn't have a boyfriend I would be seriously jealous..." Malory let out a slight laugh before she returned to the chaotic search for her heels.
Finally Malory found her shoes and slipped them on, giving herself a once over in the mirror before waving goodbye to her roommate and rushing out the door. "I'm late, I'm late! For a very important date!" The brunette's bare feet made little noise against the cold floor as she hopped along, sliding the shoe on as she did. She sure felt like the white rabbit as she bounced along the corridor towards the ballroom.
As she neared the crowd of students waiting for their dates she felt like she could vomit. She hadn't had a date to a school event in... well ever. Sure she had gone with friends before but she would never really count that as a date. And now here she was going with James Potter of all people. She couldn't be happier to be going with the Gryffindor, but she was nervous. They weren't the closest and they weren't comfortable to the point where they needn't worry about making an impression. What if Malory did something completely stupid, or what if he suddenly decided that a vampire wasn't someone he wanted to associate with.
Of course, tonight wouldn't be a dangerous night for the vampire. She had her thirst well under hand having fed that morning. Malory regretted how she had come about the blood, but it was necesary wasn't it? She didn't ever want to be a monster but the truth was she that was a monster. Feeding off of an innocent, unexpecting first year that morning wasn't something Malory was proud of. she knew she could also slip and fall into someone's veins. wasn't it? She didn't ever want to be a monster but the truth was she that was a monster. Feeding off of an innocent, unexpecting first year that morning wasn't something Malory was proud of. She hadn't killed him, but she was sure he wouldn't keep it to himself. It was a lapse in her otherwise seamless record and knowing how rumors spread Malory feared what would be done. She could handle herself but with a temper and a distinct taste for human blood she knew she could also slip and fall into someone's veins.
Another sigh escaped Malory's lips as she thought about James. He obviously saw something beyond the fangs and the stereotypes, the danger and the darkness. Malory couldn't deny the fact she liked him too, and not just because he was giving her a chance. He was genuinely a kind person, or at least he seemed to be. She couldn't explain how much she hoped the night went well. Even if they didn't work romantically, Malory needed a friend like James.
A wide smile secured its place on Moxie's face as she located her date. Walking calmly across the room to him, she opened her move to speak. "Hello James!" Good job. Class A performance Malory! Truly captivating. Fool.

To say James Potter was nervous was an understatement. He was usually pretty comfortable around females; in fact, most people knew him as a lady-chaser. In all reality, he didn't have to do much chasing. Sure, James could be a bit cocky, but with all seriousness, James was good-looking and girls noticed. And everyone else noticed the girls noticing him. He got a bit of a reputation for always having a girl on his arm but honestly James just liked to have fun. He had never really had any serious relationship before and most people knew that, too. It wasn't like James refused serious relationships but the reality was most girls came to him in search of popularity for dating the famous James Potter - just to say they were good enough for him. Made them feel better bout themselves that James gave them a chance or something. For James, it just made him resistant to anything beyond a couple snogging sessions. He was tired of getting hurt, honestly.
So while James was usually pretty easy-going around girls, Malory Ballor brought a different side of him. She was mysterious but kind - attractive, but not in a typical sort of way. She was a quiet person but he knew she was very intelligent. She was someone that James desperately wanted to know, but desperately wanted to not get hurt by. He didn't know her too well. They spent the day together after he asked her to the ball and it went splendidly. But even James wasn't naive enough to ignore the fact that one good day with someone didn't necessarily mean you knew them well. He had plenty of great dates before and the person with whom he shared them turned out to be horrid. He sighed as he looked into the mirror in the Gryffindor boys' dormitory. He was putting himself out there for yet another girl - maybe she would be different.
James felt a connection with Malory that he hadn't felt with other girls before and he was determined to show her that he wasn't really how people portrayed him. He could be serious despite his pranking and could be committed despite his constant dating sprees. James looked down to the black velvet box he held in his hand and grinned. He shoved it into his pocket and clapped a few of his mates that were standing around on the back. Together they went down to the Great Hall, all prepared (or seemingly-so) for the arrival of their dates.
The hall was beautifully decorated with pumpkins and lanterns and glittering fall leaves. The sky was its normal, starry self, replicating the night outside. James and his mates hovered in one corner of the dance floor. One by one, each of his mates found their date and off they went to somewhere in the dance floor, agreeing to meet up sometime later in the night so their dates could meet and such. James nodded and eventually he was the last to stand without his date. Maybe Malory decided not to show. Maybe he was going to find disappointment much sooner than he anticipated.
The black box in his pocket grew heavier like his heart.
"Hello James!" brought his attention from the wood floor below to the eyes of the girl he'd been waiting for. James grinned. "Hey Malory! For a second there I thought you weren't going to show!" he cheered, then moved forward to wrap her in a tight hug. He closed his eyes as he held her - maybe a moment or two too long - and then finally let her go and chuckled. "You look great...really great!" he said, then laughed and ran a hand through his shaggy hair. "Do you want to dance?Or if you'd rather not we could get a drink or something..." he offered. James wasn't sure if she was into dancing or not. He would definitely admit he wasn't the finest dancer, but he could move to the music and at least fake he knew what he was doing. With all the people on the dance floor, he imagined they would want to get drinks at least once that night - it was bound to get a bit humid in the hall.

Malory watched James nervously, wrapping her arms around him as they hugged. Again his warmth shocked Malory as they touched, his heart beat stronger than Malory's ever had been. Of course now her heart wouldn't beat, she wouldn't breath or sleep. She was a monster who could snap at any moment. Moxie released James from the hug and smiled to cover up the unbearable thought of hurting the Gryffindor. "I would never stand you up James!" she laughed, feeling guilty for being late. "I'm sorry I kept you waiting... my dorm room sort of ate my shoes..." she joked, looking down nervously at her feet.
The Ravenclaw was suddenly glad for her lack of blood-- it meant she wouldn't blush at the compliment no matter how much she wanted to. Malory looked down at her feet again, her smile widening. "You look pretty spectacular yourself James!" At that moment she knew she could relax around James. She already knew she could she just hadn't been sure if she should. She was a blood sucking monster who was barely past her first year, who had a semi-good handle on her thirst, and wasn't too used to attractive men around her. James was completely capable of defending himself against any other kind of attack, but what about a vampire? A vampire who he maybe felt something for at that? But in that moment, Malory knew he would be safe and that she wouldn't hurt him. At least not then.
"Dancing sounds great..." she said, slipping her cold, shaking hand into his warm one and smiling wildly. In Moxie's experience, school events were nothing like muggle parties. Being muggleborn, Malory had gone to a fair few gatherings with her family growing up. Barbecues, pool parties, birthday parties, Christmas dinners, all sorts of things. But unlike those times when all she really had to do was focus on not letting her magic act up and instead just bother with manners, Malory now had more than that to worry about. With James by her side she hoped she would be a bit more comfortable but there was never that guarantee. She had to keep in mind the fact that others were around, that she might not be able to handle it, and of course the fact that she had two left feet.
"I'm a horrid dancer..." she confessed as she and James moved towards the dance floor which was already getting full. "I hope you wore good shoes, because I might accidentally step on your feet..." she said apologetically, giving her date a sheepish look. She was the purest beauty But not the common kind. She made you feel alive

James was certain that he was going to embarrass himself at some point in the evening. Malory looked flawless and he was pretty sure he looked like a klutz. Regardless, James was determined to make this night great for her. As long as Malory enjoyed himself, James would be pleased. He desperately hoped that no one tried to ruin the evening for the both of them. He thought they both deserved to have a great night and he was going to do everything in his power to make sure he saw it through. "Oh no - you're fine, perfectly fine," James reassured her, laughing. "I would wait forever for you."
His cheeks felt warm but he tried to laugh off his weird attempt at being smooth. Yea, real smooth he thought to himself, sure that if any of his mates overheard them they would be filled with laughter. James meant it, though. Malory was worth every second that he stood there alone because when he was with her, he felt like he would never be alone again. James was at a loss for words when it came to Malory Ballor and he didn't know why. He never experienced this heavy, automatic fall for someone before. He wasn't sure why he had fallen for Malory so quickly but that's exactly what he had done. James didn't know really anything about her except that her personality was meant for his and they were meant for each other. He didn't want to imagine what would happen if things didn't work out between them.
James laughed as he met her eyes while moving toward the dance floor with her. "Trust me, I'm not a great dancer either - you can step on my feet anytime," James offered then suddenly moved in front of her and took her hand, then lifted her hand above their heads and giving her the opportunity for her to spin around. He laughed again and pulled her close to him, pressing his hand against her waist and holding her hand with his other. Her hands were cold compared to his own but he thought the feeling was nice. James met her eyes and grinned, suppressing the urge to chuckle. "So maybe I took a few dance classes - my mum insisted as a child," he said, smiling.

Malory was finding herself wishing more and more that she could blush. Maybe there was a way, but the vampire surely didn't know it. With a smile and trying her best to conceal a giggle at James' comment about waiting forever, the Ravenclaw stood speechless for a moment, taking the boy's hand in hers. His skin was warm, his hand strong. Malory couldn't believe she got to be there with him in that moment. Moxie could feel something pulling her towards James, some force that said she was meant to be right there. But at the same time something was pushing her away, something inside her that she knew could only be a curse she had to survive with. She was a monster and she would hurt him. She couldn't let herself get too close but at the same time it was all she wanted.
Following him on to the dance floor, Malory could instantly tell he wasn't being completely honest about his dancing skill. As he lifted his hand up and the Ravenclaw spun around under it, her hand still in his. James pulled her close and placed his hand on her waist. Malory smiled brightly, looking down at her feet before looking back up at James. "Well I'll have to thank your mum for that..." she commented with a laugh, placing her hand lightly on James' shoulder and following his lead, her smile not faltering for a second.
Almost as if Malory's nature told her to ruin the moment, her foot collided with James' as she stepped on his foot. Cursing in Russian under her breath, Malory looked up to her date with embarrassment. "What did I tell you?" she said, trying to cover her embarrassment with a laugh. "I'm so sorry, are you alright?" she asked, looking down at James' feet and avoiding his eyes. You are truly an idiot Malory...

James felt so at peace with Malory in his arms, her hand in his and those eyes looking back at him. His heart raced within his chest insinuating that he was quite nervous but he was feeling the exact opposite. James continued to sway with her and laughed. "You never know - bet mum would be pleased if she met someone like you," he said, smiling down at her. James was afraid of saying the wrong thing or doing something inappropriate but in that moment he didn't care as he pressed his forehead against hers and closed his eyes, moving slowly to the music. This was perfect.
He opened his eyes and chuckled, shaking his head as she protested against her own abilities as a dancer. "Mal, it's okay," he assured her, then put his other hand on her waist and lifted her up so she stood on his own feet. "There, now you don't have to worry about stepping on my feet cause there's no where else to step," James laughed, then took her hand and danced for the both of them. James wondered if she would feel uncomfortable about it; then again, James realized that Moxie might have been feeling a bit uncomfortable anyway because of the fact that they were dancing. He knew that some girls didn't like doing things they weren't used to for fear of embarrassing themselves. James felt like he should have pleaded with her, to tell her she could never make herself seem foolish in front of him. James wanted to see every side of her - the nervous, the proud, the funny, and the imperfect (though she could never be in his eyes.)
James stopped and set her back off his feet, then kissed her cheek. "Mind if we go do something else? I promise it'll be fun," he offered, then winked. James shook his shaggy hair back and gave her hand a slight squeeze. He felt as though he never wanted this night to end. He never wanted her to leave his sight; she was much too precious to him now.

It was beginning to amaze Malory how perfect James was, and it didn't even seem like he tried. With a simple sentence he could change the mood, he could turn a simple everyday moment into something extraordinary. It was more than a normal wizard's magic. He had a way with words, a silver tongue and he used it to make others happy, to comfort those around him rather than satisfy himself. No matter how many times Malory told herself he had to have flaws, she couldn't find a single one in the perfect Gryffindor before her.
Mal brought her hand to her face, biting her thumb as she cursed in her head. You are so stupid! she thought, criticising herself like usual. As James tried to comfort her, she only felt worse. How in the world had she been able to attract his attention? She almost wished she hadn't, then he would still see her as the silent girl in the back of the class who somehow managed to ace every exam, rather than the clumsy, stupid girl who couldn't even dance for two minutes. How he was able to talk to her, to take her in his arms and dance with her even after she made a fool of herself again, Malory didn't know.
"My dad used to do this with me when I was younger..." she said quietly as she carefully stepped on James' feet and he danced for the both of them. Both of Malory's parents were muggles; her mother British and her father Russian. Generally her mother was too busy at work to play with her children or care for them. Her father though was always there, always caring. He took care of everybody, even those who weren't his responsibility. He had been the best father anyone could have, but when Malory found out about magic, he was scared of her. For seven years, Moxie hardly talked to her father no matter how much she truly wanted to.
Bringing her mind back to the present, Malory nodded to James' question, smiling as he kissed her cheek. An odd sensation moved through Moxie's body as James' soft lips touched her cold skin. "I know it'll be fun. Everything I do with you has been perfect..." With a wide smile, Malory took James' hand in her own and followed him off the dance floor. (Okay so since the ball is ending at the end of next week I figured we could water-time some of this and take it to the end of the night where they're watching fireworks. If that's not okay with you I can delete this post - just let me know!)
The night flew past them and James was anxious. He didn't want it to end. Moxie was the kind of girl that he'd always pictured himself with - beautiful, intelligent, headstrong, but not overbearing. James was uneasy about what would happen after that night. If she was having a good time maybe there was a chance for them but...how could he tell? He was so afraid of being hurt like he had been so much in the past that it made him crazy inside. As he walked hand-in-hand with Malory to the outside setting of the ball, he wondered what exactly there was in store for the two of them. He wanted to know her more and that night gave him that. And now that James knew Mal better, he didn't want to let her go.
"Thanks for coming with me...to the ball, I mean," James said nervously. He looked up at the night sky above which was littered with twinkling stars. He grinned and looked back at Malory, unable to contain himself. "This was honestly one of the best nights I've ever had. I hope you had fun," he offered before pointing to a blanket laid on the ground as many were. James thought it a bit curious that the setting was so laid-out for them by professors to be romantic - though, it was pretty fair to assume that anyone getting to frisky might be banned. James had no intentions of being that way with Mal because, while he knew her better than he had, he wasn't willing to ruin their possible relationship.
James allowed Moxie to sit first and then he sat beside her. He didn't necessarily wrap his arm around her, but he set his hand on the other side of her to give that effect without actually cuddling him into her. He felt she might get the wrong impression so tried to play it safe. Everything he did around Moxie was done cautiously. He couldn't ruin this, as he tended to ruin most things. He wouldn't know what to do if he lost Malory because of something he stupidly did. James looked over at her and smiled and, just as he did, the first firework exploded in the sky, illuminating in her eyes. He bit his lower lip as he gazed into her eyes and, finally, reached his right hand to set against her jawline. Afraid of what might happen, but brave enough to accept the consequences, he leaned in, closed his eyes, and kissed her.
