Minerva Genevieve McGonagall was born on October 4, 1935 to Robert and Isobel McGonagall in Scotland. She was the eldest child of her parents, having two younger brothers. While her mother, Isobel, had given up her magic for her love for Robert, Minerva displayed small bits of magical abilities in her childhood. While eventually Isobel admitted to Robert about magic, she, along with Minerva as a child, helped hide the magical incidents that Malcolm and Robert JR. made happen. Her childhood was bliss, though. Her parents were joyous, loving, and committed to teaching their children all the rights from wrongs while allowing them to have fun and be nurtured. They were absolutely adoring and Minerva knew she was blessed to be in such company.
On her eleventh birthday, Minerva received her Hogwarts letter. Her mother sobbed of joy, and her father seemed proud too, despite not really knowing what Hogwarts was and all of the glory it held. The following year, she began her learning at the school. The hat took exactly five and a half minutes debating on which house she should be sorted in - Gryffindor or Ravenclaw. Minerva was sorted with the lions, but proved there that not only was she brave, but extremely bright. She was quickly recognized as the most intelligent student in her year, though had a particular knack for transfiguration. In her second year, Minerva met Pomona Sprout, a first year at the time. The two became very good friends, and would continue that friendship throughout their adult life.
At the end of her school days, Minerva had a very impressive record. She was both a prefect and Head Girl, scored top marks on her O.W.L's and N.E.W.T's, and won the Transfiguration Today Most Promising Newcomer Award. Under the practice of Albus Dumbledore, Minerva also became an Animagus. She had also played on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. During her last year, though, a foul was made on Slytherin's side, which landed her with several broken ribs and a concussion. It is this event that is most likely for her excited performances in the stands as she has watched Gryffindor play Quidditch for so many years, wanting Slytherin to get crushed on the pitch.
After graduation, she was offered a position at the Department of Magical Law Enforcement for the Ministry. She spent one last summer with her family before moving into London, closer to her work. During the time at home, she met a local farmer named Dougal McGregor. She was madly in love with him. They spent most days together and, at the end of summer, McGregor proposed. Minerva accepted, but later that evening dawned on what she'd done. She realized if she married a Muggle, she could not tell him about being a witch, and would have to give up all of her magical ambitions like her mother did years prior. The next day she told McGregor she'd changed her mind, though could not give him a good excuse as to why. She left him devastated, and three days later headed to London.
After two years at the Ministry, Minerva left and took the job of teaching Transfiguration at Hogwarts under Dumbledore. As a professor, Minerva was very strict and cross, and was definitely not a teacher to anger. Still, students respected (or feared) her, and she was very well-liked among the staff of Hogwarts. She eventually became Head of Gryffindor house, as well as Deputy Headmistress later on in her career.
She remained close with her old boss, Elphinstone Urquart. Elphin was in love with Minerva and proposed to her many times after she left her position at the Ministry. She refused, though, as she was still in love with Dougal.
During the first wizarding war, McGonagall remained a faithful and loyal member of the Order of the Phoenix. She continued to teach at Hogwarts and suffered no loss of limbs throughout the war. She was one of the lucky ones as she practically went unscathed. She was of vital importance in the fight against Lord Voldemort whom she was educated with at Hogwarts. She also knew many of his followers from having attended school with them also which only made things more difficult and awkward when it came to battles.
In 1981, a mere baby defeated Lord Voldemort, though lost his parents in the process. Minerva urged Albus to keep the child, to allow him to be raised in a magical society. She was sure any wizarding family would take him in. But, Albus insisted that Harry be placed with his real family. As such, Minerva helped in his plan. She traveled to Surrey and watched the Dursley house for several days, reporting back to Dumbledore that they did not look like the kind of people Harry should be with. While Dumbledore didn't like the idea of putting Harry in a muggle home where he would not know who he truly was, he knew it was best for him. As such, Minerva assisted Dumbledore when Hagrid brought baby Harry to Surrey, then said goodbye.
In the summer of 1982, Elphinstone strolled about the Hogwarts lake with Minerva and once more proposed to her. However, this time, she accepted. Her love, Dougal, had formerly died and she felt freed of the pain she caused him. Being a feminist, she kept her maiden name. Elphinstone and Minerva lived in a small cottage in Hogsmeade, though never had any children of their own. Their time together, though, was quite joyous. They often had her nephews and nieces visit them, which kept the light, airy atmosphere in their home alive. It was a good start to the new life without Voldemort at large. They could finally be happy.
Three years into their marriage, Elphinstone suddenly died of a venomous Tarantula bite. After her husband's funeral, Minerva packed her things and began to live in her first-floor study at Hogwarts. She simply could not bare to live in their cottage alone, constantly being reminded of their love and happiness. She sold it and put the money aside for supplies she would need later on.
Minerva became very solemn, though remained a great professor. In 1991, Harry James Potter, the same baby that had defeated Voldemort, began his learning at Hogwarts. He was sorted into Gryffindor - Minerva's house. He once again became under the care and watchful eye of her. While she was a strict professor, Minerva often bent the rules for Harry, such as when she discovered him flying on a broomstick without proper supervision and against Madam Pooch's rules.
In 1992, Minerva was forced to punish Harry and his best mate Ron for almost exposing wizardry to the Muggle world. She was far more fair than Severus Snape would have been to the boys. It was in this year, too, that she was present for the reopening of the Chamber of Secrets. In the final weeks of the year, Minerva served as Headmistress of Hogwarts while Dumbledore was away for failing to stop the attacks against students, an accusation brought upon by
lucius Malfoy. When Ginny Weasley was taken into the chamber, Minerva thoroughly believed the end of Hogwarts was near. However, the monster in the chamber was dealt with by Harry and his friends, and Dumbledore returned to settle all other matters. The next year was fairly joyous, despite Sirius Black being on the loose. While she kept a close eye on Harry, the GGryffindor Quidditch team won the Quidditch cup which was something she could be happy about. After the celebrations, Minerva admitted to having kissed one of the professors - though knows not til this day whom it was.
In the fall of 1994, the Triwziard Tournament came to Hogwarts and Harry Potter was chosen as a champion. Minerva begged Dumbledore and the Minister, Barty Crouch, to remove him from the tournament. Seeing as it was against the rules, there was nothing she could do further. Minerva was a nervous wreck the entire year, having to watch after Potter to ensure his safety. At the end of the tournament, when Crouch Jr. revealed himself, Minerva was assigned to keep watch over him until Ministry authorities arrived. Fudge, the minister, arranged for Crouch to receive the Dementor's kiss, making him unable to account for what truly happened that night. Minerva was absolutely furious and went off on Fudge. Harry admitted to her later that he'd never seen her so angry. She apologized, briefly, though not for saying her not-so-kind words. Minerva stood by her superior and student, though, as the Ministry began to try and keep Voldemort's new reign hushed up, knowing the truth behind it all.
When the second wizarding war began in 1995, Minerva immediately returned to her position in the Order of the Phoenix. At Hogwarts, newly appointed Dolores Umbridge created chaos. Minerva did everything she could to circumvent Ubridge's proposals and actions in the castle, but to no avail. The Ministry worker even sacked Professor Trewlawney, but Minerva stood up for her and escorted the professor back into the castle upon Dumbledore's word. During the O.W.L examinations, Minerva planned to intervene when they attempted to evict Hagrid from his home. However, before Minerva could draw her wand, four stunning spells hit her squarely in the chest, and she was moved to St. Mungo's immediately.
Minerva didn't return to Hogwarts until the Department of Mysteries battle, after which she awarded all six students involved 50 points each, a throw to Snape as he had previously mocked harry for Gryffindor's zero house point total.
Later in the school year of 1997, Minerva participated in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. She was stuck on the floor below harry and Dumbledore, and could not move to reach them. Snape could, though, and shoved past her. Mcgonagall was devastated when Snape murdered Dumbledore, the man who had served as her mentor and friend for several years. McDonagall led the wand raising to remove the dark mark from the sky, and also prepared and led the funeral for Albus Dumbledore. In the final days of Hogwarts that year, she became Headmistress. However, she was stripped of that title by Snape as he took over.
The next year, Minerva remained at Hogwarts as Voldemort took over. She wanted to ensure that as little harm as could be withstood occurred to the students. She also helped in keeping the meetings of Dumbledore's Army a secret from the darker staff and students. On May 2, 1998, Minerva was present when Harry, Ron, and Hermione returned to Hogwarts in search of Rowena Ravenclaw's lost diadem. With help from Harry and Luna Lovegood, Minerva incapacitated the Carrow twins. The Heads of House banished Snape from the grounds after concluding a battle would be taking place. Minerva helped secure the castle of Hogwarts, preparing for the arrival of Voldemort and his forces.
In the final moments of battle, Minerva battled Voldemort head-on alongside Horace Slughorn and Kingsley Shacklebolt, but they were cast aside as Voldemort learned of Bellatrix Lestrange's death. They most likely would have resumed dueling with Voldemort, but Harry revealed himself and took over. With the conclusion of the war, Minerva returned to her position as Headmistress of Hogwarts. She had intended to retire in 2017 when Harry's first son came to Hogwarts, but has decided to stay until their final child leaves.
Minerva now lives in the Headmaster's office, among the portraits of those before her. She does not, however, teach any classes and simply remains a symbol for the staff and students that darkness will not take over their school without a fight.
