Summer was nearly there and soon that would mean that Sage could have the option to get around the world to go surfing again. The water baby was always fascinated by the sport, even from a young age. This was where his appreciation for muggles came from. The people who taught him his love, no wizard could have taught him this. His brain was already set for this summer. He'd spent too much time staring into books the last few months and now his mind was off away in a far away place, of waves crashing upon the breach and rocks. Of feeling the water around his body, it was just so very natural for him.
His mind was very much out this very castle and that means that walking around was probably not the safest of things. He was walking up towards the library to be able to read a little more to study for the end of term exams for sixth years. He didn't want to study but it was necessary to continue moving up in the world. To make the most of your life. So alas studying was something that he should do.
Books in his hand he rounded a corner and ran into something. He didn't even realize that it was a person until the shock of his books hitting the floor snapped him out of day dreaming. He quickly blunk his eyes as he looked at the girl he'd bumped into. ”Sorry, was a bit out of the castle for the moment,” he said as he bent down to grab his books. ”Studies and summer plans never mix well together, do they?” he asked. Sage had come from a wealthy family, the Devenpeck's had plenty of money and that meant the most interesting of vacations. Every year they'd always go somewhere and his father would work all vacation long.

Aubrey herself was headed for the library, not truly paying attention. Her mind was on summer, her next party and if she could manage to get some Fire Whiskey for a party in the Gryffindor Common Room for the end of the year. A shock sent her out of her thoughts and back to where she was in the here and now. A boy had bumped into her, and a handsome one at that. "Oh no, don't worry! I wasn't exactly paying attention either!" She helped him pick up his books and locked eyes with him. "No, they usually don't. I'm Aubrey by the way, I was headed to the library myself to do some homework and study for exams."
She really needed to stop being mesmerized by handsome boys and pretty ladies and get her head back into her studies or she'd bomb her end of the year exams. That was not what she needed, but not like her father would care. The girl swept some of her brown hair behind her ear and stood completely, turning to walk to the library and waited up for Sage. "What classes are you studying for? Maybe we can study together?" If he was preparing for Exams this much, he must have been a sixth year, as she had seen him in some of her classes. "I've seen you in my Potions class, so I'm sure we could benefit from a small study group. If you don't want to though, I understand." Aubrey realized she was yammering and quickly shut her yap as not to annoy the boy.

Sage couldn't help it that his mind was away on going across the world. Who would be able to help it? Plans were afoot and none of them involved actually studying. Literally he was bumped out of thoughts of travel to a fairly pretty girl that he'd just ran into. ”Oh no, don't worry! I wasn't exactly paying attention either!” He'd bent down to get his books and she met him on the ground to help and they locked eyes. His blue met her brown and then she began to speak again. ”No they usually don't. I'm Aubrey, by the way, I was headed to the library myself to do some homework and study for exams.” ”Yes, unfortunately my head was very far away from this castle,” he said with a sigh and his accent thick. ”I really am sorry, I should stop day dreaming and start paying attention,” he told her with a slight chuckle.
Studies were important, especially in Sixth Year, but it was not nearly as stressful as Fifth or Seventh year, the latter that he'd heard about. But he recognized the girl from classes. They were in the same year and she was a Gryffindor, for some reason Slytherin and Gryffindor nearly shared all of their classes together despite the two houses having a rival. ”What classes are you studying for? Maybe we can study together? I've seen you in my Potions class, so I'm sure we could benefit from a small study group. If you don't want to though, I understand.” Sage smiled. ”I would love to study with you, and yes I'm just kind of working on all my classes, Dad wants me to work in International Magical Cooperation like him, I wouldn't mind it so much, but I need to pass my exams to be set up for it,” he told her. And then he realized he'd never actually introduced himself to her. ”Oh, and I'm sorry, I'm Sage,” he told her with a shy grin.

She was caught up in his blues and finally realized he was talking and his accent, it slew her. She was a sucker for accents, but never said a thing about it. "No worries, I get that. Summer is almost here and we're all someplace else for the most part." She winked at him and handed him the books she had gathered off the floor for him. 'Snap out of it Aubrey!' she chided herself in her head. 'You need to study to pass these exams, not lose yourself over a pretty boy!' Aubrey shook her head a little to clear it and smiled at him. "Yeah, I need to do the same thing, I can't afford to bomb on a test. My father won't care, but if I want to be a dragon trainer I need to show them I know how to be responsible." Another shrug and she blinked.
"Wow, that sounds like an undertaking." Maybe not as different as her wanting to work with Dragons, but the idea of a desk job horrified Aubrey, she'd rather be running for her life. "Not sure I could handle that myself. I'd rather be running from a Dragon than sitting at a desk, but that's me." She chuckled and then broke out into an infectious grin when he said yes. "Awesome! We can figure out which classes we share and go from there!" Her hazel eyes danced as she began walking for the library and kept pace with Sage when he did start moving again. "Is working with your father something you want to do?" She was admittedly curious and hoped he didn't mind her asking.
As they reached the library she opened the door for him and then slipped inside herself. The place was quiet with students reading and she sighed. "I'd really rather be on the pitch than this." She meant studying and not hanging around with him and she hoped he knew that. She decided to make sure he knew. "Although, good company always helps it go by faster and maybe it will help it stick. If I botch a potion one more time I'm fairly sure she'll kill me." She giggled and walked toward an empty table and took a seat, digging her own books out of her bag.

”No worries, I get that. Summer is almost here and we're all someplace else for the most part.” Sage grinned and he knew that. ”Yeah, I need to do the same thing, I can't afford to bomb on a test. My father won't care, but if I want to be a dragon trainer I need to show them I know how to be responsible.” ”A dragon trainer, really?” he asked her.
”Wow, that sounds like an undertaking.” Maybe it was, but that was where he was destined to be. ”I'm good at it, good at making friends if needed, I've learned from the best,” he said speaking of his father. He would always believe that his father was best at his job and really trusted what his parents said. ”But training dragons, that sounds a lot tougher than sitting behind a desk and lavish parties as my father has done,” he told her. When he agreed to studying she seemed happy about it and that way they could figure out the classes they needed studying for. Then she asked him a question, one he'd never actually thought about. Did he actually want to do what his father does? ”Honestly, I've never given it much thought, it's just always where I thought I'd end up, I dunno, maybe I'll figure it out further on, but as of right now that's where I'm at,” he said. He really had no idea, did he want to do that? Did he want to work in the job that uprooted his entire life across the world? He'd never actually thought about it. Maybe something else would be a good option.
They opened the door to the library and both of them made their way inside. ”You play Quidditch?” he asked her as she spoke about much rather being on the pitch. ”I never got into the game, I don't tell most people about this, but my sport of choice is surfing, that muggle sport on water,” he told her.
”Although, good company always helps it go faster and maybe it will help it stick. If I botch a potion one more time I'm fairly sure she'll kill me.” ”I'm decent at Potions but it's so technical and super easy to mess up, but I can help you if you'd like some,” he told her with a slight smile. He sat down next to her and pulled out his Potions book. ”But you made it to N.E.W.T.s levels with Potions so you can't be terrible at it,” he told her.

She faced him when he asked if she really wanted to be a dragon trainer and nodded. "Yes, I want to study them, work with them, train them. Anything to do with them really." She wasn't surprised that he sounded stunned by her career choice and she winked. "As was stated, I'd rather be running for my life than doing something repetitive, something predictable." another shrug as they walked in and she chuckled. "You are easy to talk to. Then again I make friends easily as well, I'm a party girl at heart, but, I know when to grow up and be an adult." Her voice had turned serious as she took her seat and spread out her own books. She looked to him when he talked about lavish parties and wrinkled her nose jokingly. "Yeah, it might be tougher, but no day will be boring for me. I despise boring." She muddled about and finally fished out her own Potions book. She blinked at him though when he stated he hadn't given it much thought and then realized her family life had driven her need to find a job, become independent and away from her house. "Lucky. I need to do well, get a job and get away from my father." There was no condescension in her tone, or snark, not even envy, that wasn't Aubrey. "Well, at least you know, right?" She took out some old homework to look over and memorize for a test and sighed a little, she perked up though when he mentioned the muggle water sport. "Yes, I do, during the summers on an impromptu team. We get together, toss around the Quaffle and just have a good time. I'm going out for the school team next year, go out with a bang, you know?" She smiled softly at him and then blinked. "Never heard of it, what's it like?" That would get him talking and maybe he'd even light up for her. She enjoyed when people talked about things they loved because it showed all over their faced and in their body posture and the like. When he switched back to school she nodded. "I'm average but I keep managing to blow to tougher potions like a bomb. I don't know. I follow this stinking bloody book and always get the same result...BOOM." She flopped the book open on the table and showed him a potion she was having a particularly hard time on. It would render the user invisible. "That, I do everything correct and it always blows up in my face...literally." She gave him a sheepish smile and sighed "I'm getting sick of being covered in soot." ”I understand that, I did want to be a healer when I was just a kid, needing something that wasn't going to be so boring, but I dunno, I don't think I'll be good at the stress of such a job,” he shrugged. Maybe he had thought about it, but he also wanted to be a dragon when he was a kid so just because his child self thought of it didn't mean it would happen or was a dream, though becoming a dragon would be pretty cool.
”You are easy to talk to. Then again I make friends easily as well, I'm a party girl at heart, but, I know when to grow up and be an adult.” He chuckled as she said it. ”The world shows very different things out in the world for people, but to each their own right?” he asked her with a smile. He found his own potions book and flipped it open to their current chapter and he looked at it carefully. She then said something about needing to get away from her father. ”Is he not a good person?” he asked her softly. Wanting to get away from your parents means you don't like something. He must not have been a pleasant person. But Sage had been lucky with his mother and father, neither had done much to even upset him or make him feel inadequate at what he did. Sure they got into arguments but it was over silly things in the end. Sage knew though that people out there had it worse than he did.
”Well at least you know, right?” ”Yeah, I guess, it's more of just putting forth a motion than anything else,” he said softly. Then she spoke about her playing Qudditch and asked him about surfing. ”It's just about the best thing in the world,” he said the light in his eyes bright and a grin so very wide. ”But essentially, you have a board with a few fins on the bottom on it and you paddle out to waves and stand up on the board when you hit a wave and glide across the water back to the beach, that's the easiest way to describe it but it's a lot more difficult than it sounds, some muggles taught me when I was a kid, I can't tell you how many times I fell and crashed into the water,” he told her with a smile. Just talking about it made him miss surfing outside.
”I'm average but I keep managing to blow the tougher potions like a bomb. I don't know. I follow this stinking bloody book and always get the same result... BOOM.” He chuckled at her description. ”That, I do everything correct and it always blows up in my face... Literally. I'm stick of being covered in soot.” Sage carefully looked at the invisibility potion that was giving her trouble. ”Are you reading the book while making the potion?” he asked. It sounded like a stupid question but he was curious if she was. People who read the book sometimes let the potion brew a tad too long because they were reading it, that's why making potions was best done from memory or with a partner, someone could read while they other could brew.

A healer, huh? Well then. She grinned at him and then nodded. "I get that, seeing all the sick people, hurt and in pain, not sure I could do that either, but being able to heal is a gift. My aunt could do it, and she dared not ignore it." He was smart and kind it seemed, along with profoundly able to answer things with a question that made her think. ”The world shows very different things out in the world for people, but to each their own right?” Well, that was unexpected. "Well yes, everyone has their own little world and not even spouses see everything about the other." Her hazel eyes held a thoughtful look as they talked. "You have no issue working for your father, so it seems where as that would just about kill me. Difference makes the world go round." She smiled and went back to her book, trying to figure out where she kept going wrong. "No, he's not. He doesn't beat me or anything, but he never really was there, never cared." A pained look passed her face and she did her best to keep it brief. "My mother was afraid of my magic, my father is a wizard, mom was a muggle." She looked back to him and gave a sad smile. "Mom was scared of Dad too. She didn't know he was a wizard until they were married. It's not that he hid it, he just didn't think it was important to mention." Her father was ditzy and scatter brained and didn't care for much else but his books. He had loved her mother, until she shunned him for his given talents. "He grew distant from Mom when she shoved him away for his magic, as she did to me later. After that, nothing but his books mattered." She shrugged, but the pain was clear in her face and her voice. The change of topic was welcome and she grabbed onto it. "It sounds like the best thing in the world, you light up when you talk about it." She smiled at him now, the pain gone, except for a twinge. "I love it when people talk about things they love, they always become animated. I'd love to see this sport sometime." She meant it, she also wouldn't mind visiting the place where this sport took place, but her heart was in the UK with her friends and her chosen profession. Back to school talk and she sighed. "Yep. Well, glances anyways to be sure I'm doing it right. I might be missing something though." She knew she wasn't perfect and hated to brag about herself. The girl was very good at two things, maybe three and the rest she figured she was average at. Quidditch, Animals and Parties were her thing, Potions was hard for her, but she had managed to get this far with it. "You might be better at Potions than I. I'll try really reading the book next time." She poured over the ingredients and directions once more, trying to figure out where she went wrong. Word Count: 519 Tagged: SAGE LENKA DEVENPECK

”I get that, seeing all the sick people, hurt and in pain, not sure I could do that either, but being able to heal is a gift. My aunt could do it, and she dared not ignore it.” He looked at her and smiled. ”Yeah, I dunno what I'd do if I lost someone, I don't deal with death all too well,” he told her. His father had passed on a quizzical mind to his son and Sage sometimes blurted things out of his mouth that would make one think. Things that wouldn't normally cross a teenager's mind found it's way into his own. ”Well yes, everyone has their own little world and not even spouses see everything about the other.” He nodded in agreement whens he spoke to him.
”You have no issue working for your father, so it seems where as that would just about kill me. Difference makes the world go round.” ”Not really working for him, but for the Ministry, in fact, my father works for Aussie Ministry and I would probably find work here in the British Ministry, more of working in the same field as my father but for completely different companies, that'd be the best description,” he chuckled at the last bit. A smile came across his face, ”or I could you know try to become Minister or something,” he laughed.
But he'd asked her about her father and she didn't seem to mind to say anything. ”No, he's not. He doesn't beat me or anything, but he never really was there, never cared.” He could see the quick pained look on her face but just listened carefully to what she said after that. ”My mother was afraid of my magic, my father is a wizard, mom was a muggle. Mom was scared of Dad too. She didn't know he was a wizard until they were married. It's not that he hid it, he just didn't think it was important to mention.” Her father sounded like a very scatter brained person, much unlike his own father. David had always been very involved despite his work and his mother had always been the perfect pureblood stay at home mother. Sage was happy though with his family, they made a good family and a close one.
She smiled when he spoke about surfing and then told him that she loved to hear it when people spoke about the things they loved because of how they spoke about it. ”It's amazing, the best thing that I could do that isn't magic,” he told her, ”I've got some muggle magazines that have pictures of some of the professionals that surf, I could show you sometime,” he smiled softly.
School was always something that came back into conversation, no matter where you were or who you were talking to, but especially if you have books sprawled across a table trying to work on classes. ”Yep. Well, glances anyways to be sure I'm doing it right. I might be missing something though. You might be better at potions than I. I'll try really reading the book next time.” He smiled softly. ”You could be missing something, I mean I'm not perfect, I've had a couple potions go boom on me, that was my fix to it, but it's possible there's a step you're skipping,” he looked at the ingredients. The worst thing about advanced level Potions was the book couldn't even explain where you went wrong, no you had to figure that out on your own. The beginning of the year began with him and his own face soot covered.

Aubrey listened to him and nodded. She didn't think anyone dealt with death well and those who did had something wrong in their heads. "I'm not sure anyone deals with death well, Sage." Her hazel eyes were on him and filled with understanding. Although when he went back to talking about work she was stunned. "The Ministry! That sounds like one heck of a career choice indeed. They don't pick just anyone." She was sure he'd get in fine, he seemed really bright to her. "I'm sure you'll do really well." She looked back down to the book and read the steps over and then it hit her. "Hell, you're right, I'm missing a step." She gave him a side long glance and sighed. "I just get so jittery with the teacher roaming the room. I really don't like disappointing people." She shrugged and made sure that she memorized the steps to redo the potion tomorrow. Aussie? "Aussie?" She asked, clearly confused as she didn't know much about the other countries. Sure, she had read about some of them, but the term didn't ring a bell with her. She wondered if he wouldn't rather be down working within the same branch as his father. She could see him doing well as Minister though and smiled, nodding. He was soft spoken so far and kind, both things that would work in his favor. "I think you have what it takes, from what I've seen." She meant it. Again he lit up, talking about the sport he loved. "I would love to see that sometime! Anything you want to show me!" She beamed at him. "Who knows, maybe one of these days you can teach me!" Aubrey was an adrenaline junkie and she loved anything that gave her the unmistakable rush that she got from Quidditch or bumming around with Hagrid and tending to animals and even getting to ride the Hippogriffs. "I have good balance, I do play Quidditch after all, even rode a Hippogriff a bit ago." She was having studying with him, even though it was more chatting than anything. This didn't bother Aubrey though as Sage was interesting to her. She finally asked what was on her mind. "Wouldn't you rather go work in the same place as your father? A place you can do what you love?" She was unsure why he would stay here when he could be there, riding the waves and enjoying life. She knew that she would never leave the UK except for vacations. "I personally do not see myself leaving the UK, all the dragons and the lot are here. My work would be here." She smiled at him and poured over another book for a moment, Charms this time. "You know, I'm sorry I didn't talk to you sooner." She gave him a shy smile and watched him for a moment before flipping the page in the book and sighing gently. She wouldn't mind seeing him in the water, on the board, surfing. She realized she was day dreaming and turned bright red, letting her hair hide her face. She really needed to stop doing that. Sage looked at her as she spoke about not dealing with death well. He knew that was true, but it was something that people said. He couldn't work in healthcare it just wouldn't work out, it'd be too incredibly depressing for him. But then she seemed stunned about the Ministry. ”The Ministry! That sounds like one heck of a career choice indeed. They don't pick just anyone. I'm sure you'll do really well.” Sage chuckled. ”Yea, but it's a job in the end, and if I've got the goods for them, I might as well give it a shot, what's the worst that happens, I charm the ladies drinking in the local pubs here?” he asked with a rather large grin. He watched as she had looked at the book as he spoke about such things. Then she told him he was right about missing a step. ”Memorization is my way of working on keeping my potions from going boom, doesn't always help but it's better than smelling like char the rest of the day,” he chuckled.
”Aussie?” She seemed so very confused, but he knows that feeling. Even coming to the U.K. was a tough feat. Most wizards didn't have the whole foreign world taught to them as children. ”Sorry, it's just the Australian Ministry, Aussie is one of those things we call ourselves, like how the British sometimes for short call themselves the Brits,” he told her, ”it's just slang, that's where I'm from, Australia, and instead of calling myself an Australian, I'm an Aussie.” He smiled softly but she told him that he had what it would take and that made a wider smile. But then their conversation stuck back to the surfing. ”I'll grab them, maybe tomorrow after Potions I can show you them,” he told her, ”and find me a wave and I can show you, I'd love to.” He didn't share it much with other wizards because of it being a muggle sport but the people he did speak to, well honestly he'd love to show anyone who was willing to learn. She told him of her balance after playing Quidditch and riding a Hippogriff. ”That's crazy, brooms are just uncomfortable and I've never got on too well with creatures like Hippogriffs, maybe they think I'm an arse or something,” he shrugged.
”Wouldn't you rather go work in the same place as your father? A place you can do what you love?” ”Well International Magical Cooperation works differently than most jobs, sometimes you work for your own Ministry, like Dad once did, when I was a kid, but then other times they move you across the world, most Ministries have their people working other Ministries across the world, like I'm sure the British Ministry has people in Australia, in China, America, all sorts of places, it works so that we can rely on each other for different needs and things, so we don't hate wizards from around the world, so I would be doing the same thing as my father, but there's no guarantee that I'll stay in one place,” he told her. It was a tough thing about the job, but it was a great way to travel. ”I'll go where the job takes me, even if it means going to a place in the cold where I couldn't surf,” he told her, ”I'd survive.” And it was true, he would, he'd take every vacation to a warm place but he would survive. But she spoke about herself not leaving the U.K. how a lot of dragons were here. ”Imagine working with them abroad, like Peruvian Vipertooths in Peru, you, but my work will probably be here, at least for a while, not so senior members typically stay in their own Ministry for a while, kind of being like an intern,” he shrugged.
He watched her open up her Charms book and she gave a smile as she told him that she was sorry that she didn't talk to him sooner and honestly he felt the same way. ”Yeah, it's been refreshing to talk to someone who's not all judgmental, we need to hang out more often,” he told her. He totally misted the bright red that her face started turning though. Sage had never been incredibly good with flirting, but maybe it was because it was something that just happened for him. He didn't try, and he just didn't notice things that other people did, but other things he did notice. It just all depended in the end.

Aubrey caught herself smiling at Sage, going a bit red she caught herself and looked back down to her book. Bloody hell what was wrong with her? She usually had no issues like this and was usually rather out going and hardly ever blushed or thought twice about flirting. This time was different. He was different. “Mmmm, that is true. We'll all need a decent job to get by once we're out of here.” She watched him again and smiled gently. “Your choice is a whole lot safer than mine, I'll tell you that. The conversation went right back to school and Aubs couldn't help but be a little disappointed, but she didn't let it show. He had a point, she would need to pay closer attention to the book when she was working on a potion and even memorize the steps. “I'll keep that in mind.” She looked back over the Charms book and then back to the Potions book and the particular potion that kept exploding on her. She looked back to him when he spoke again and she nodded. “Alright, now it makes sense to me. I had just never heard the term before.” Australia huh? It sounded exotic. “What's Australia like?” Her eyes danced as she watched him, wanting to know about his home and where he grew up. She beamed when he stated that he would show her after their potions class tomorrow. “That sounds amazing, Sage! I can't wait and hah! I wish we could find one here, but I don't think we will.” She gave a cute little pout and then went back to her book. However when he stated she was crazy and that brooms were uncomfortable she laughed. “I don't think so and Hippogriffs take some getting used to. I'm following Hagrid around a lot, so I got to know Boldfeather and some of the others. Even got to ride him, but I told you that.” The memory of the ride made excitement course through her veins and she knew at the moment studying wasn't going to happen as they were having too good of a time getting to know one another. She liked that even a Slytherin could be nice and Aubrey was never one for house prejudices anyways. She had never seen the point. They were all there to learn, no matter the house they were sorted into. “I doubt you're an arse, Sage.” It came out soft and gentle, her hazel eyes on him and smile played on her lips, nodding as he talked about how the ministry worked. “Ah, so that's how you ended up here then, yeah?” Well, yes, that was part of the job, was to go where they sent you. It was the same working with Dragons and the like. “I'll have to go where they send me as well, now that I think about it.” She had forgotten the other dragons and nodded. Peruvian Vipertooths, those sounded amazing.”That sounds absolutely brilliant! I would most definitely want to see and work with one of the Vipertooths.” Truthfully, she just wanted a good job, doing something exciting that would get her out from under her father's roof. “Hagird has a friend who trains Dragons and he's going to talk to that person for me, so who knows, maybe I can get a head start on it!” She sounded so exited and in truth she was. She blushed for a moment when he stated that is was nice to talk to someone non judgmental and she nodded. “I never understood the rift between our houses, or any house for that matter, we're all here to learn, regardless of house. We should be fostering friendship and not hatred between the houses and students.” She grinned though at his next words. “Most definitely! I would enjoy that! Once our tests are over sound good? Or maybe another study session or two?” She was smiling brightly now, enjoying spending time with Sage. He was sweet and smart and very easy to talk to. It was like a breath of fresh air.
