gabriel shaw mataki
CANON OR ORIGINAL: Original
AGE: Fifteen
FACE CLAIM: Kei (Diaura)
YEAR: Fifth
HOUSE: Slytherin
OCCUPATION: N/A
BLOOD TYPE: Halfblood
WAND TYPE: twelve and three-quarters inches, dragon heartstring, cherry
PETS: Gabe owns a small (but rapidly growing) black kitten named Luna who would jeopardize his sister’s attempts to get him socializing more, if the kitten actually stuck around him. As it is, she prefers to wander the castle in search of stray mice. Oh, and to antagonize the other full-grown cats in the castle.
ABILITIES: None (though not for lack of trying--Gabriel is going to try to start training to become an animagus)

LIKES: *School. Gabe finds a great deal of comfort in the routine of school (and he’s good at it). *Animals. He greatly prefers the company of animals to people. *Beauty. Makeup, hair styling, expensive robes--you name it, Gabe probably indulges in it. *The dark. Gabe finds nothing ‘scary’ about the darkness. He relishes it, in fact--even joking sometimes that he’s actually a cleverly disguised vampire. *Sweets. Gabe has a sweet tooth the size of Jupiter, and it’s never really satisfied. Though, he really just likes food in general, too.
DISLIKES: *Socializing. Not only does Gabe dislike social things, but things like meeting new people terrify him, as do loud and/or crowded places. *Bugs. He’s just as much of a wuss about bugs as any girl. *Lack of understanding. It frustrates him to no end when he doesn’t ‘get’ something as quickly as he believes he should. *Breakfast. Despite his love of food, breakfast is not a meal he frequently takes part in.
BIGGEST FEAR: Gabriel’s biggest fear at the moment is not getting good enough O.W.L.s. He is striving for straight O’s, though will reluctantly settle for an E or two. However, in his mind, anything lower is absolutely unacceptable, since he needs the best marks he can achieve to get into the Healer program like he wants to when he finishes school.
PERSONALITY:
-Perfectionist. Gabe is a perfectionist, which is both an asset and a hindrance. While he will accept nothing less than perfection from himself, and this makes him better academically, it also means that he, say, takes far too long on his appearance in the morning, and takes longer on assignments while pondering the best way to say something--even on assignments that don’t really count for much.
-Antisocial. He’s never had much experience in the social fields, and as a result can’t really hold his own in those situations. It’s difficult for him to make friends, and he’d rather just stay in a corner of the common room while working on the first draft of an essay due in two weeks. It doesn’t help that he finds the schoolwork vastly more important than a social life--a product of his upbringing and prior schooling in Japan.
-Loyalty. While it’s difficult to gain Gabe’s trust and friendship, and as such his friends are sparse, he’s fiercely loyal to those who he does call friends. He’ll go out of his way to be there and make sure his friends are happy. Conversely, if someone breaks his trust, he’ll go out of his way to make their life a living hell (with vile suggestions coming from his sister; though he can’t produce the ideas himself, he has no qualms about the execution). He doesn’t give second chances. In his mind, if you don’t value him enough to keep his friendship in the first place, you don’t deserve his friendship.
-Indulgent. Gabe holds a fondness for the extravagant in life. Be it the finest robes, fancy (though perhaps useless) magical gadgets, or various new quills and inks (which he collects), he will buy it. An outsider may speculate that he uses these material goods to compensate for the consequences of his antisocial behavior--that speculation would be fairly accurate.
-Understanding. Even though he’s such a worrywart about his own problems, Gabriel is remarkably cool in the face of others’. He may not have solutions for himself, but he always has space in his head to sort out the worries of others. He’s a listener, and always does his best to approach things with an open mind and help where he can.

MOTHER: Jamie Mataki (Harris). A pureblood witch who was partial heir (split with one unmarried sister, Lillah) to the family fortune, but still worked as an ambassador between the Japanese Ministry and other countries’. She met Satoshi shortly after her transfer to the department shortly after the turn of the century. Jamie was a woman with serious, businesslike mannerisms, but those who knew her knew that she was really quite sweet (until you crossed her, anyway, as her children rightly knew).
FATHER: Satoshi Mataki. A muggleborn wizard who was very optimistic and cared deeply for his family. He worked in the Japanese Ministry in Muggle Relations. As a muggleborn himself, he was in an advantageous position to deal with the challenges of having wizards and muggles in such close quarters in cities like Tokyo. Both his parents passed away this past summer.
SIBLINGS:Amelia (Mia, preferably), third year Slytherin. She’s the social butterfly of the family, making connections (to use to her advantage later, of course) wherever she goes. Whereas Gabriel gets where he wants to go through his own determination and hard work (and perhaps a few charms in a pinch--it’s not cheating!), Mia uses others to her advantage. For example, she takes advantage of the existence of study groups, and otherwise, has a name tucked away in her head for almost any purpose. She works to keep these connections alive as well, recognizing that someday, she will need to call upon others to help her out in a pinch--be it for a job interview, or backstage tickets to a Weird Sisters concert.
HISTORY: Gabriel’s story is a double-edged sword. While he had an excellent childhood, filled with plenty of tutors for subjects both magical and muggle, his parents allowed this early thirst for betterment to consume him rather than take him away from those for social outings. As a result, even though he is experienced in various fields like piano and kendo, he had few friends as a child other than his sister. She sought friends more than he did, but living in the country, it was too easy for Gabe to stay on their mini-estate enjoying the comforts of home and house elves. His mother had half of a large inheritance in addition to both his parents working, so they were never worried about money. He was actually a very spoiled child in that regard, and there is no denying that the money went to his head early on--he never knew the word no. The eleven-year-old boy went through his first four years of magical school in Japan. In his first year, he met a wizard named Aiden on the bullet train to the school, and the two (surprisingly enough to Gabe) clicked extremely well. He belatedly learned how to survive in a group of people. However, though his book smarts led to Gabe being the unofficial (and quiet) head of many study groups, Aiden was the only student he could really call a friend. Then, near the end of his fourth year (after which he would never again be just the quiet and studious but helpful kid), a group of nefarious young adults sabotaged the staff entrance to the Japanese ministry, after a controversial mandate for muggleborn children to be raised in the magical world from birth. The concept of blood purity is still strong in Japan, so the wealthier (and often pureblood) families who would be required to adopt at least one of these children objected to this. Gabe’s parents were among the first to go to work that day, before people were aware of what was done, and they along with ten other ministry workers suffered injury that the Healers could not reverse; his parents passed away that same day. Since the newly-orphaned siblings had no magical relations in Japan (their father being muggleborn), they were sent to live in England with their aunt, Lillah Harris, when school ended.
During the summer, Lillah tried to make them feel at home, but even Mia never looked to go out and find friends, preferring to retreat to childhood pastimes like violin (with an accompaniment by Gabe on piano), and reviewing spells and other coursework with her brother. He was not very keen on the idea, preferring to wallow in depression, but one day Mia snapped on him. From then on he applied himself to his reviews and found himself better off for it. When the time came to go school shopping, Gabe was more or less his normal self again on the outside, enjoying the outing, spending more money than normal for the start of term--on things like an impractical peacock quill and metallic purple ink, and new books. He bought one of hexes, one that detailed the more interesting and lesser-taught aspects of history, and one that had detailed information on animagi--though it wasn’t a complete guide, Gabriel hoped the library would have more information. One of the pieces of magic his father deeply wanted him to accomplish since he never could was to become an animagus, and Gabe was determined to try. Both siblings also got a pet. Gabe got a black kitten with faintly lighter spots, which he was told was an Egyptian Mau. Mia got a Snowy Owl, and promptly (and unoriginally) named it Yuki (meaning Snow in Japanese). Gabe, in turn, promptly proceeded to tease her about it. They passed the train ride to Hogwarts with nothing of interest to note. When it came time to disembark, though, the two siblings went with the first years to be sorted, whispers and murmurs following the older transfer students (Gabe in a nightmare-like state) as they sat under the hat. Mia was sorted into Slytherin. Though the Hat was torn between Ravenclaw and Slytherin for himself, Gabe chose Slytherin to be with and look after his sister--with the Sorting Hat telling him that the Slytherins would be good for him, whatever that meant...
