dancing through the fire Laila shrugged and shook her head. "No, my family doesn't have much time to travel...mum killed herse-...self when I was in second year. Dad works for the Prophet so he's always got loads of articles and such to write and doesn't make much money...so we don't ever really travel. My brothers and I are fine though, we always find something to do round the house," she said with a smile. "Callum's training to be an Auror right now, though, so we don't see him much," she explained, then ran a hand through her hair. She tried to play off that she was fine, but she secretly hoped he didn't take the news of the death of her mother too hard. It was hard enough as it is, being that she only died three years ago. Laila was still working through the grieving process.
She giggled. "No, I didn't get caught, but it was rather frightening. The halls are way creepy in the night with just the dim candles to light the way - at the point I hadn't mastered the Lumos spell," she explained. Laila bit her lower lip and put her head against the back cushion. "Yea, it is very cozy," she said sleepily, closing her eyes and smiling.

When Laila mentioned her mum killed herself, Ollie gasped a little and put his hand on hers in between them on the couch. "Laila, I'm so sorry. That must have been so hard for you," he replied sympathetically. It only made him respect her more, that she could seem to have it so together when something so awful had happened. "That's right though, you don't need to travel to enjoy yourself. It's good that you and your brothers get along." He felt quite bad that he had caused her mother to be brought up - it must have been so hard for her. She seemed to be holding it together but he knew she must be hurting underneath. "If you do want to talk about things, I'm happy to chat anytime. But also happy to drop it if that's easier for you," he said genuinely, giving her hand a squeeze. All he knew was that he wanted to do anything he could to help her, whatever that looked like.
He nodded and laughed at the comment abotu the halls being creepy. "Yeah, I had to sneak back down to the Great Hall a couple of weeks ago to pick up my Quidditch gloves, when I only realised I'd left them behind after curfew. It was pretty creepy going down there, but kind of fun too," he said with a smile. He watched her as she leaned back and closed her eyes. She really was beautiful.

dancing through the fire Laila bit her lip and nodded. "It's okay - really. I mean, it happened three years ago and I think the worst part is that she did it to herself you know....we were really close. She loved my brothers, sure, but her and I were definitely closest and it just makes me wonder...you know...if it was because of me," she muttered. She felt his hand on hers and the reassuring squeeze made her lift her head and smile softly at him. "Thanks for being there for me, Ollie, it means a lot," she said and then, bravely, leaned in and kissed his cheek.
She pulled back and grinned, feeling warmth float up through her cheeks. Laila hoped the shading of the dimly lit room would hide it but she wasn't so sure. "I think it'd be better to go exploring with someone else ya know? Like if I hadn't been alone or so caught off guard about it, then it might not have been so creepy," she laughed, but was very serious. Doing things with other people tended to take the tension and stress off them. Doing anything alone was a whole other ordeal entirely.

Ollie didn't know how she could be okay with it. Even if it was three years ago, it was such an intense thing that he felt it would be hard to get over. "Hey, you can't let yourself think that it's your fault. If you and her were so close, there is no reason that she would do that because of you," he assured her seriously. If she blamed herself for it, that would be terrible, and he really didn't want her to be feeling that kind of guilt when she shouldn't.
But then she leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. Ollie hadn't had his first kiss yet, and he supposed this didn't count. But still, he blushed a bit and smiled at her, squeezing her hand again. He didn't think it was the right time to try and actually kiss her here, though- he felt it would be best to wait until a better time. Perhaps the trip to Rome?
He was grinning as well, though, and matching the blush that was on her cheeks. There was clearly something there between them which he was very pleased about. "Yeah, going with someone else definitely makes things easier and less scary," he agreed.

dancing through the fire She nodded appreciatively. "I know, and I try not to...it's just kinda hard. Like, she didn't write a note or explanation or anything. I thought everything in her life was good, I thought we were good kids and that she and my dad were so in love....so then why would she do something like that and leave us so...so hurt?" Laila asked, tears forming in her eyes. She clung onto them and held them back but they were so obviously there despite her efforts to hold them back. She knew Ollie didn't have the answers that the dark parts of her heart searched for, and there was nothing he could do to really ease the pain of losing her mother. Being there was enough, she knew, and she didn't want him to feel bad because of something that was out of his control. She sniffled and then leaned onto his shoulder, allowing a few tears to roll down her cheek and hopefully fade out of his sight. "I'm sorry our talk turned so sour," Laila coughed, then looked up at him and offered a weak smile. "It's hard to keep it all in sometimes," she said softly, then brushed her hair from her face. She felt a bit foolish about crying right in front of him, and at the same time, felt like he wouldn't judge her for it. At least, she hoped he wouldn't.

Ollie continued to reassure her. "There were probably other things going on in her head that she had no idea how to work out. There's so much that you can't know, so blaming yourself won't help you at all, it'll just make it worse," he said, hoping she would realise that. He couldn't imagine how hard it would be, so he realised his words might not take effect as easily as he hoped. But he would definitely continue to support her.
"Don't apologise. It means a lot that you told me, it helps me to get to know you better. Nobody deserves to have to go through what you've gone through, but I can tell you've been so strong coming through it."

dancing through the fire Laila continued to lean on him as his words flowed through her. She absorbed them and let them sink in, allowing herself to take the truth they held. She sniffled and looked up at him, smiling weakly as she said, "Guess that's why I'm in Gryffindor huh? Bravery and all that. Laila sighed deeply and sat back up, running her hand through her hair. "Thank you, though...for everything," she said with a smile, taking his hand and giving it a small squeeze. She bit her lower lip and then looked to the picnic basket. Chuckling, she said, "I deserve some fudge after that," and took out the bag, stuffing a piece in her mouth. "Whum shum?" Laila asked, then swallowed and laughed.

Ollie laughed. "Yeah, I guess so. I don't know if I could have gone through something like that and be dealing with it as well as you have," he pointed out. He squeezed her hand in response as she thanked him. There was no way he would have done anything differently, he would definitely support her. "Oh yeah, fudge makes everything better," he agreed. "I'd love some!" He reached down and took some out of the bag, popping it into his mouth. "Wow, thish ish really good," he mumbled through the fudge.

dancing through the fire Laila grinned as Ollie got excited about the fudge and held the bag out for him to take some. As he plopped it into his mouth and talked through it as she had, Laila couldn't help but laugh. "We're a mess," she laughed. "But of course it's good! It's Honeydukes!" she said excitedly, chomping on another piece. It really was delicious. It was funny, though, there were a lot of students who had never even tried the fudge from Honeydukes. Instead they would get the Bertie Bott's beans or other notorious items, but when Laila tried the fudge after she returned from her mother's funeral during the Christmas of her second year, she immediately got hooked. It was a bit of a comfort treat for her, sure, but she could never refuse fudge from Honeydukes. It was just too good.

"Yeah, we are a mess, but when you're eating fudge it's ok to get really into it, right?" he asked her after he had swallowed it. Ollie loved Honeydukes as well, from what he could tell it was pretty rare to find someone who didn't at least like one of the sweets that they sold. "So you said you had brothers, right? How many?" he asked, wanting to know more about her.

dancing through the fire "Exactly," she agreed with a laugh. "Oh yea - I've got two brothers actually. Callum and Rhys. Callum is an auror-in-trainer and Rhys is going into sixth year, and he's a Gryffindor like me," Laila said. Her brothers were really very close with her, so she hoped that they might be able to meet Ollie some day. They were kind of similar in ways, so Laila thought they would get on very well. She could hope, at least. "What about you? Have you got any siblings?"

Ollie nodded as he listened. "Oh, so you're the middle child? I am, too! That's pretty funny," he said with a smile. "I have an older brother, Julian, who works in Diagon Alley, and my sister Emma is going into sixth year in Hufflepuff," he explained. It was interesting to hear how similar their families were in ages. "Did you like being the middle child?" he asked her. He hadn't minded it - he hadn't had the pressure on himself that Julian had felt being the eldest brother, but kind of to make up for that he had put the pressure on himself to try and do better. He loved being able to look after Emma, though.

dancing through the fire Laila laughed. "That's cool! See - we have a lot in common," she noted, but that much was evident. Their love of Quidditch, outgoing natures and adventurous sides to run in the rain, and now their family similarities made them very good matches for each other. At least, that's what she thought. She tried to think if she knew of an Emma in Hufflepuff, but she couldn't think of any. She would certainly have liked to meet his sister, though. "It was fine, I think. I think the worst was being the only girl, not so much the middle. I mean, Callum protected me a lot of the time but then Rhys tried to do so, too, so it's like I've got security guards sometimes," she laughed. "But don't worry - they're both very laid-back. They're not so much protective now as they used to be, they just like to make sure I'm doing okay," she explained. Callum and Rhys were definitely not the type to tell her what to do, but they did take her well-being seriously and would make sure she was happy. The death of their mother helped that connection. Crummy a situation as it was, it actually did have some good on their family as a whole; it brought them together.

They really did have a lot in common. It seemed that whenever one of them came up with an idea, the other was easily on board with it - and they had very similar interests and tastes, and now it turned out their families were very similar. There were obvious differences as well, like what Laila had gone through with her mother's death, but Ollie would always support her in that, and everyone had to have differences as well. It was what made everyone unique, the different experiences they had gone through. All he knew was that he loved hanging out with her already. "Well, i'm glad they're more laid back now. I wouldn't want to get beaten up for hanging out with you," he commented with a grin. Being interested in a girl with brothers was always a dangerous game if they were protective.

dancing through the fire Another laugh escaped her at his mention of her brothers beating him up. "No, no they would never do that," she laughed, picking up another piece of fudge. "But they might interview you - so be prepared for that," Laila said with a wink, but she being totally serious. It was definitely not beyond Callum to ask Ollie a million questions about himself to make sure he was a good guy. Laila had no doubt that Ollie could deal with it though - Callum wasn't that bad. At least, she hoped he wouldn't be too hard on Ollie. If her brother scared him away, Laila would be totally and thoroughly pissed.
